"a lengthy and embarrassing experience"

(Germany)

Trip Verified | Horrible experience: We paid 60 dollars for our checked in baggage and mine was slightly over by 0.5 pounds, while my boyfriend's had almost 1 pound less weight than was allowed. We were made to unpack and repack two times until we had the weight evened out between our suitcases, which was a lengthy and embarrassing experience. I understand that there is a weight limit, but with this slight overweight in my suitcase it was really a question of whether one or two jeans go in my suitcase or my boyfriend's. Really petty, will try to avoid United Airlines in the future.

"United has continually gone downhill"

(United States)

Not Verified | This is not about the flight, this is about the Customer Service. I booked a flight one month ago on United to Sydney. When I went in to make a matching reservation the site stated a change had been made to my itinerary and to give them a call. When I gave them a call they said I had to pay $300 more for my ticket, they also wanted me to pay a change fee. This is not right, I did not cancel my ticket, they cancelled my ticket and I should not have to pay more when they changed my ticket and I had no say at all. I switched from Southwest to United about two years ago because I thought I got better Customer Service and flights, I was wrong, United has continually gone downhill in the last two years and I will be switching back to Southwest and any over seas travel will not be on United. They are dishonest and to not care about the customers at all. If I hadn't checked the ticket who knows how much extra they would have charged me on the day of the flight.

"Plane very basic"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | London to Auckland via San Francisco. Plane very basic, none of the long haul creature comforts that are offered on other airlines eg no toothbrush, eyemask, socks (earphones given if asked for). Most importantly no usb / charge socket. TV the size of a cell phone that was hard to watch but had a reasonable selection of programs and movies. Staff however were very friendly and food was to a good standard, regularly offered drinks.

"Worst airline out there"

(United States)

Not Verified | San Francisco to New York. First, they don't use our Known Traveler Number for our tickets so we were denied of using our TSA Pre and had to wait in the regular line. Then we had to pay 55 dollars for our carry on bags since they had no overhead space (all I was carrying was that one carry-on). Prior to passing security we paid 25 dollars for a personal bag. (Someone next to us had to pay for their carry on as well and were not happy). My sister's monitor for the entertainment system did not work. I don't want to put every employee of this airline in the same pot but the ones at our gate were not professional and my sister and I heard them laughing at us while we headed down to the plane. I never write reviews. Worst airline out there. I will never fly with this garbage airline again.

"will not fly United anymore"

(United States)

Trip Verified | My husband and I were flying business first from Ft Lauderdale to Las Vegas via Houston and wanted to go to the lounge. We were greeted by a pleasant lady who, after looking at our ticket, said that we could not use the lounge since we were not flying international! I am sure that we spent more $ on this ticket that we would international! This is a disgrace! We had to go to another terminal accept our priority pass and Admiral Club that United would not honor! For sure I will not fly United anymore!

"Not clean at all"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Oklahoma City to Indianapolis. Plane wifi would not work. Plane AC was not working well. We had to check our carry one for 60$ to get on the plane to see that there was plenty of room for carry ons. Very very disappointed. Small, gross plane. Not clean at all.

"They really aren't that bad"

(Canada)

Trip Verified | I was flying to Minneapolis from Hong Kong for a friends wedding, and of all the airlines, United was among the cheapest and had the best connection times. I was pleasantly surprised by how normal or pleasant it was. For one thing, my flights either arrived on time or early! For the international leg (i.e. HKG-ORD and subsequently ORD-HKG), service was quite good. While the 777s they operated both seemed a bit old, but the cabin was in good repair. My HKG-ORD flights were on 777s with the 3x3x3 seating configuration- an increasingly rare sight, though really, there's not that much of a difference compared to 3x4x3. I think their food is pretty decent. I normally fly Cathay and I liked the food on United better - I especially appreciate that the snack was a sandwich, not a pot of instant noodles. Cabin crew were quite friendly and periodically walked the aisle with water. I also appreciate their provision of Illy's coffee. While it is by no means the best coffee in the world, it's a high quality brand nonetheless. My flight managed to arrive in Chicago roughly 2 hours ahead of schedule, which was great because the member of staff that rechecked my bag to my connecting flight was kind enough to help me get booked on to the earlier flight- she didn't seem particularly enthused, but I suppose that's understandable when it takes about 10 minutes to actually put everything together, so I appreciate her effort either way. Now to talk about their domestic product- My flight to Minneapolis St. Paul was onboard one of their mainline flights, which operated on an A319. The interior and the seats seemed quite new, and the leather seats that they had were actually quite comfy. There is no seatback TV (which I'm used to for these short hop flights), but they do have onboard WiFi like they do on the international flights that allow you to view movies on your device for free- that makes up for it. The cabin crew for the flight seemed somewhat less hospitable onboard, and for the hour and a half flight- the a bag of pretzels and water was provided- there wasn't a proper beverage service. On my way back, I had a very pleasant encounter with the check in staff at MSP, where they answered some technical questions (mainly regarding whether I had to reclaim my bag at ORD like I did on the way in) as I checked my bag and were kind enough to carry my bag onto the conveyor belt. As I was flying on a United Express Flight that operated an Embraer E-175, boarding was fast since it is a very small plane. For this particular flight, I had very friendly cabin crew and full beverage service (including hot coffee). I also got a very nice bag of cookies. This flight also went without a hitch. I would remark however, that seeing as all United Express flights are docked at Terminal 2 in Chicago while mainline United flights are docked in Terminal 1, it is quite a long walk between the terminals- then again they did give me a 3 hour layover, so I probably needed that and more. Based on this experience, I'd definitely give United another go. They really aren't that bad. Some may actually say they're fairly good, especially when you consider what you're getting with the amount you spend.

"worst "food and service ever

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Dublin to Tampa via Newark. Horrendous, worst food and service ever. Economy plus seats were not great - not much different than economy and the crew were bored and uninterested. To cap it all we had a three hour delay in Newark. United / Continental used to be a great airline, after twenty years, never again. I think they need to realise their is always a choice.

"It was a nightmare!"

(United States)

Trip Verified | It was a nightmare! My wife, our 10 month old baby, and myself were flying out of Charlottesville to LAX via Chicago. At the CHO airport we were delayed due to inclement weather for a few hours. Finally when we boarded the plane, they discovered a leak. Unfortunately for us, the mechanic was a few hours away. Good thing United was able to get a different plane. But all our connecting flights to LAX were already gone. The events up to this point were likely outside of United's control. Now we were stranded in Chicago for the night with a baby. When we all went to the United customer service, the reps argued that the delay was due to bad weather. For 40 minutes! The baby was crying, everyone was angry and tired. Is it hard to pick up a phone and check with the flight crew/United? We could have been already in a hotel resting. Finally, they called and confirmed it. With unhappy face, the reps gave us hotel vouchers, as if they were making us a favor and as if we were bugging them. The hotel was a good 30 minutes ride outside of the airport area. But they had a reliable shuttle and we made to our 6 am flight without problems. Never we will fly United again. I was going home after a 4 month long Active Duty training and my family joined me at the last phase. I paid for my wife's seat out of my pocket with hopes that we would have a pleasant flight back home. By the way, entertainment was really bad. You had to pay to even track the flight.

"made my flight very comfortable"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Honolulu to Tokyo Narita. Flying with United Airlines was very easy. In Honolulu Check in was fast and easy with people to help with the fast self check in system. Flight on time boarding went smoothly attendants were helpful. Meal service was fast and efficient.and beverages served often both ways, from and back to Honolulu. I would definitely fly with the friendly skies again, Layovers were only a few hours. My thanks to all the employees on the aircraft and ground which made my flight very comfortable.
