“far better value for money than expected”

(Canada)

Trip Verified | We flew on a brand-new aircraft (just delivered in September 2023) and China Southern is just as good as I remember it being from before the pandemic. Staff on the ground in Beijing were very efficient with the boarding process, and cabin crew were attentive and professional. Of particular note for me is that the cabin crew actively goes around the cabin helping passengers with their carry-on luggage, and is more firm with passengers about suitcases taking priority over backpacks, purses, coats, etc. The cabin crew is also more strict with enforcing pre-takeoff and pre-landing rules, like seatbelts, seat recline, and tray tables than other airlines I have flown with. Cabin crew were also very diligent in frequently cleaning and checking on the lavatories, and keeping them clean and stocked. Being a new plane, the seats were clean and comfortable, with enough legroom in economy for me, who is 183cm in height. The seat also felt like it reclined more, and the tray tables were able to be folded in half to take up less space when there is only a drink. One point that I was disappointed by was the catering: before the pandemic, I recalled that China Southern always had a more "Chinese" option such as congee for the main dish, rather than the standard "chicken or pasta". That was a real selling point for me, and I was disappointed when the meal options this time around were "pork or fish", though the meals were still very good. The IFE had a good variety of programming, with all the latest Hollywood movies and over 200 pieces of programming, but suffered from mediocre-quality headphones and lack of customizable subtitle options; these two made it very difficult to understand the programming on the IFE over the loud sounds of the plane, which only had English subtitles for Chinese-language programming. Overall, I felt like the experience in economy was a far better value for money than expected - there are economy-class products out there which are far more expensive for the same or lower quality. If not for the long layover in London on my way home, I would hands-down choose this itinerary every time. I would definitely fly China Southern again from Beijing.

"food was absolutely disgusting"

(Australia)

Not Verified | The food was absolutely disgusting. No vegetarian options available online in the FCO-CAN route and I was given rice and boiled vegetables. On arriving for transfer in Guangzhou the bus took a long time to get to the building and gave very little time to transfer. Airport officials were literally screaming at each other and the baggage check was ridiculously slow and bureaucratic. The officials continuously yelling at each other was extremely stressful and threatening. The airport is huge and has a large amount of shops with no one in them. The whole experience was awful. Interestingly, the flight to Melbourne involved staff being much more polite and there was an ability to choose a different meal online.

"I would like to thank the staff"

(China)

Not Verified | I would like to thank the staff of China Southern Airlines. I might have faced the problem of not being able to enter France. When it was determined that there was a problem with my preparation materials, they communicated and tried to find a solution. Finally they contacted their colleagues in French and with the help the Thai immigration office confirmed that I could leave. The staff actively tried to find a solution, and through their efforts I successfully embarked on a flight. I am very thankful for their help, patience and kindness.

"Not a special airline"

(South Korea)

Trip Verified | Not a special airline. The website is shockingly outdated and frustrating to use. I save my special meal preference and it did not process as the airline crew told me they did not have it. Seats were cramped with no inflight entertainment or outlets. Guangzhou Airport was dreary and not one of my favorite transit hubs.

"trip exceeded my expectations"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | I had chosen China Southern because of the ticket price. The trip exceeded my expectations, I was very happy with the service from the ground staff and flight attendants. Despite the language differences, nothing was too much trouble, they even indicated by a little sign on my tray table that I had missed a meal service whilst I slept, they had saved it for me. I enjoyed the food, it was plentiful and tasty. The in flight entertainment is a bit disappointing, the films and programmes were old, nevertheless I would recommend this airline and will use them again.

"destroyed my luggage"

(Australia)

Trip Verified | China Southern Airlines destroyed my luggage, tore and bent the wheel, my suitcase was new and now it is trash. I tried to contact them by email more than 10 times, I sent the photos and footage, and they are saying that they didn't receive any photos by email, and I can prove that I sent them, I've already sent them more than 10 times and they don't solve my problem.

"the bag was waiting for us in Da Nang"

(New Zealand)

Trip Verified | Everything worked as it should have, until we arrived in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). One of our two bags didn't arrive. Easy to find the missing luggage counter. Exceptional service from English speaking locals (my apologies for being completely ignorant of your local language!). Quickly informed that the missing bag was on the next flight, arriving in 3 hours. Unfortunately we had a train to catch to Da Nang that was departing before then. No problem, they would fly the wayward bag to Da Nang and we could collect it from the airport, which is close to the train station. A few hours into our overnight train journey I got an email that the bag was waiting for us in Da Nang and we duly collected it 12 hours later.

"I would recommend this airline"

(Australia)

Trip Verified | I chose to fly with China Southern because the price of the ticket was so much less than other better known airlines. The down side was a six hour layover in Guangzhou on the way there. On the other hand, on the return trip, I went straight from my first leg flight to the other without pausing. I was pleasantly surprised by the cabin. The layout is fantastic: 1 2 1, with the middle two seats facing in opposite ways, so there are no "bad" seats. As long as the seats can turn into lie-flat beds, I'm happy, and this airline's ones do. Another tick. The service was impeccable. Being the only non-Chinese passenger in the business class cabin, it was fair enough that none of the staff spoke English, but the language barriers were overcome by the staff eagerness to understand and to please. All the flights departed perfectly on time and all landed early. Not so good was the on board entertainment - very little choice and a lot of older stuff - meaning that I had already seen a lot of the films. I would recommend this airline without hesitation.

"I am very grateful"

(China)

Trip Verified | I missed my passport on the domestic flight during the transfer process. Before the baggage enquiry post was open, Ms. Xu from the international departure office actively helped me contact various departments to find my passport, then I successfully caught the flight, and avoided the trouble and loss of the subsequent journey. I am very grateful for that!

"treated very badly by staff"

(Australia)

Trip Verified | Terrible service — treated very badly by staff. I had a 15 hour layover, and they still tried to charge me top dollar for their VIP lounge. This is also taking into account that their shower facilities are broken. So one cannot clean, yet must pay a hefty entry fee. I paid over $2,000 for a long haul economy class flight, only to be pinged with more fees as a result of their layover times — for a link fee that’s out of service. This will be the last time I fly with China Southern. They should learn to treat their customers better.
