"staff is just amazing"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Norfolk to Honolulu via Dallas Ft Worth. Best Flight Attendants I've ever had, they took time for questions they were beyond kind and made sure accommodations were comfortable, they were courteous professionals. Prices are great, Entertainment, and staff is just amazing. I can say that from here on out I'll continue to be a loyal AA customer and I hope this review reaches the staff attending flight A5 from DFW to HNL and AA1998.

"Staff were friendly"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Atlanta to Boston via Charlotte. Absolutely nothing wrong with the in-flight product on this domestic connecting flight. It was an older plane, so seat pitch and recline were reasonable. I suspect the newer layout would be less comfortable. Staff were friendly. Unfortunately they wanted $75pp to be put on the standby list for the sooner connecting flight, which seemed unreasonable as it would only save us 1 hour. Their hold times for phone service were ridiculous (45min+).

"crew can make a difference"

(Spain)

Trip Verified | Amazing how a crew can make a difference in flying the same route. We flew from Barcelona to Miami on Dec 31st on an 777-200. The plane was old but the crew was excellent (flight 113) and in the 9 hour flight we received a pretty good lunch preceded by drinks first and during the flight the crew did not stop passing around snacks and drinks. Shortly before landing we were served a hot snack. On the flight back (112) the crew was rude, hurrying to serve the dinner and then disappeared (the sat on the back of the plane were there were free seats and watched tv or did some knitting!) and never came through the cabin again (seats were full of waste) until the very poor breakfast which they served in a hurry. The plane was far from old and the temperature couldn't be regulated (it was freezing all flight) and there was a terrible noise (a kind of alarm triggered 1 hour before landing) which felt really annoying if not scary.

"crew wanted their rest"

(Argentina)

Trip Verified | New York JFK to Buenos Aires. Very fast check in at terminal 8. Business class lounge ample with good selection of food and drink. First on board. Was offered champagne in a plastic cup followed by newspapers, etc. 10pm flight, not full, departed the gate 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Business class seats comfortable although I do not like the backward facing one I got - not shown on the seat map when I booked - beware. Dinner was rushed through, not very appetizing, but wines good. Got the impression, as usual, that the crew wanted to get on with their rest and ignore the passengers/ customers. Breakfast option of Chili Omelette was weird, to say the least, and not appropriate for most passengers, plus served less than 45 minutes before landing and therefore extremely hurried. No chance of a second cup of coffee. Fruit plate was barely acceptable as most of the fruit was not ripe. In sum, have been on more pleasant transatlantic AA flights with better much service and much better food. Seemed like a different airline. IFE was OK, no current movies, but live TV goo

"one nightmare after another"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Houston to Vail via Dallas Ft Worth. This entire trip was one nightmare after another. On my outbound flight, I sat in the plane at the gate for over 2 hours for a maintenance issue involving some kind of latch in the cargo area. That was frustrating, but I would prefer the plane be safe prior to takeoff, so I accepted it and moved on. My return trip was one issue after another. I was notified of a 2 hour delay about 5 hours prior to the scheduled departure time. While I was never given a formal reason for this original delay, it was suspected to be as a result of weather in other parts of the country. I was understanding but still needed to know how to handle the ticket for my missed connection flight. The attendant at the desk advised me to still remain on this flight and the connection ticket would be handled for me once it was "officially missed." I did so and continued waiting. The plane was delayed for a little longer than originally planned but it did finally arrive at the airport. Unfortunately, yet another plane had maintenance issues and the delay was extended by another 1.5 hours for them to check it out. The departure time was 4 hours and 17 minutes late. I had been rescheduled onto several intermediate flights but, ultimately, missed all connections due to another delay upon arrive at DFW - we were not able to get to a gate so we were waiting in the holding box for an additional 20 minutes. I was finally booked onto the last flight between Dallas and Houston for the night, so I went to the gate to wait the 1.5 hours. While waiting, the flight was "delayed" by 30 minutes, and the shortly after that announcement, it was cancelled altogether. After waiting in line at the AA customer service desk for 30 minutes, I was informed that they had not scheduled a flight crew for that flight, which is why it was cancelled. So I had to be put up in a hotel and fly out the following morning. The airline dropped the ball in numerous ways, but the poor state of their planes is the most concerning. I finally contacted them after it was all finished and requested compensation for the nightmare that I went through and the airline offered me a $100 "goodwill" voucher to fly American again in the next 12 months. I do not accept that as sufficient compensation so I continued emailing back and forth, ultimately ending with a phone call from corporate customer relations saying that this was all that I was entitled to since they provided the service that I paid for - a flight between the two destinations. I am shocked that multiple delays and hours spent in airports waiting for their mechanics to get the planes in fit condition to fly amounts to $100 on an airline that I have no intention of ever flying again if there is any alternative. I've flown Spirit airlines multiples times and had better customer service than American provided. I advise you to steer clear and avoid American Airlines if at all possible. I could have driven the 1200 miles and gotten home before I did by flying.

"Flight delayed repeatedly"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Savannah to Miami. Flight delayed repeatedly, for more than five hours, how is it possible to make any connections. Extra fees for everything, checked bags, drinks, snacks, headphones. How does this airline compete on the global market.

"they couldn't break the rules"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Kauai to Detroit via Los Angeles / Charlotte. We used our loyalty program to book tickets with American. United is the hub where we live, but we have chosen American for what used to be its service. The program apparently has so many rules that when we arrived in Charlotte, NC trying to get back to Detroit, there was an earlier flight. American would not allow us to get on the flight even though the plane was half full. The company preferred to make its loyal customers wait for six hours until its next, probably half full flight leaves for Detroit. I waited at the gate for the agent who never showed. The pilot, who was waiting too, politely told me that I could go to the customer service desk to get help. When I arrived there, two of my original five passengers were somehow on this flight. Interesting that they had to fly back already allowing American to resell their seats, saving them two 850 vouchers at our original departure city. The agent at customer service told me I had to call a number to get help. The agent at the number couldn't help. But her supervisor at Dallas Fort Worth asked why I hadn't talked to a supervisor at the gate. I politely told her that I was told to call this number. She told me we could fly standby but the agent had to reset her documentation which is fine print for not wanting to take the heat. Every single time each employee said they couldn't break the rules - he/she was not going to get written up for breaking the rules. I wonder when helping loyal customers became breaking rules. Sounds like this organization needs to reorganize around its central service orientation: people. Looks like I wont be choosing American over other airlines anymore. Loyalty program beware.

"missed my connecting flight"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Dallas Ft Worth to Corpus Christi. Our plane couldn't land because the taxi runway was still taken up, because of this I missed my connecting flight, I was supposed to be home before noon, instead I'm spending my entire afternoon in the DFW terminal having to buy overpriced food and American Airlines refused to refund any portion of my trip even though it's their fault I didn't make it home on time.

"This is a blatant extortion"

(Germany)

Trip Verified | Guadalajara to Dallas Ft Worth. Flying AA in economy (Booked using BA Avios) you must purchase your checked in luggage at the check in. This caused insane mess and it took ages. Check in agent then informed us that we are not seating together and offered to seat us together at the cost. This is a blatant extortion! Besides, this is completely unsafe practice, as in case of an accident split families will look for one another putting the whole evacuation at the jeopardy, but i guess for AA it's only $$$ that matter. Safety is overrated. Staff ground as well as flight crew, not a friendly bone in their body. Service is fast and efficient though, but might as well be performed by robots.

"deeply disappointing experience"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Los Angeles to London. Another deeply disappointing experience with American, and this time it involves an illegal, deceptive sales method. Purchased a so-called "basic economy" ticket from LAX to Bucharest at a not so basic price. This allows me to check in 24-hours in advance and obtain the best seats then available. Was unable to check-in online and was told it is because I am flying on BA to Romania. Romania is a EC member-country just like France, England, & Germany and also does not require a visa of US-citizens, so I do not understand this pretext. I was told to drive out to LAX and check-in tomorrow when there is nothing left but middle seats in the back. I protested and then learnt the real reason my check-in is restricted: they advised me to purchase seat assignments online for more than $100. When I protested further the agent told me it was my own fault for buying "basic economy," but I responded that the real error here is patronising American Airlines. This is what is called by the FTC "bait-and-switch" and it is illegal. I am dreading this trip now because of this and the 3-hour connexion on BA - the last time I flew AA to London and then a BA flight to Düsseldorf my suitcase was delayed for two hours but it took BA five days to bring it to me and by that time I was on my way back to the airport to continue my journey - they then tried to negotiate me down on my modest interim expenses. I advise you to save yourself anguish, headaches, and "American-"style service (that means discourtesy all around and bitter stewardesses with chips on their shoulders) and fly a foreign carrier like KLM, Swissair, Lufthansa, or Austrian. You'll arrive happier and in good condition.
