"using KLIA as a transit airport"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | We were using KLIA as a transit airport for an onward flight to Kuching. This is what went wrong. Arrival. No signposting to customs, but it was still pretty easy to get to the correct place and a very short queue to get through passport control. We did not know and could not find out if our cases were checked through to our destination, or if we had to collect and check in again. We met a number of other passengers with the same problem. Eventually we decided that the best course of action was to see if we could find our cases. No signage to baggage collection. We saw 4 groups of people from our flight also looking for this, which makes it likely that there were many more as you only see the people in the few rows around you on a flight. No staff available to help but after about 30 minutes we found that there was a bus to a different part of the terminal where baggage was unloaded. This area had a number of baggage carousels all empty and stationary. We found our suitcases which had been unloaded from a carousel. We then needed to get to KLIA T2 for our connecting flight. As we now know, the way to do this is on the express train that connects T1, T2 and central KL. However there were no signs for the train and eventually we came across someone who suggested that we take the free shuttle bus to T2 (the train is 40p). This proved to be very bad advice. The bus is quite slow as it seemed to us to be mainly used by workers at the airport; we were the only tourists on it. On arrival at T2 and now very tired after a 13 hour flight and a 90 minute trip around KLIA whilst unloading our cases we were distracted and "lost" the bag containing passports and other important documents. There is no CCTV on the shuttle bus or the area of disembarkation. The staff at the T2 help desk were exceptional and spent 3 hours with my wife trying to locate the bag. Malaysia Airlines recommended arriving 3 to 4 hours before flight departure. As we had single use UK issued emergency passports and locally issued visas, we took the 4 hour option. Tourists who didn't realise that the although the central isle platform for the train has a line on each side, trains depart in both directions (to T2 and to KL central) from both sides of the platform. We did manage to save a few people from a big detour, but maybe KLIA to do that job? Finally for us having checked our bags we proceeded through the airport to an area with 37 gates. Thought we might get a bit of breakfast (sandwich and coffee) before getting on the plane. Plenty of opportunities to buy expensive stuff, but one small cafe (about 24 seats) supplying that whole terminal.

"haven't seen this anywhere else"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | I see there was a tiktok video that went viral talking about the need to dispose of your water bottle at your gate. I was to reiterate what was said in that video. It's unacceptable that you can't take water into a 13 hour flight, and it makes no sense at all when the water in question is purchased inside the airport. I'm a frequent traveller and haven't seen this anywhere else. The Malaysians defending the airport clearly haven't travelled far outside of Malaysia where the experience is different.

"Unhelpful staff"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Poor. Unhelpful staff. Not much in the way of facilities. The most annoying and unexplained issue is that you can buy drinks right opposite or near to the departure gates but then due to extra security checks cannot. Take them any further. Does not make sense as you are airside!

"terminal itself feels run down and poorly managed"

(Hong Kong)

Trip Verified | This review refers to terminal 1 departure. Whilst KLIA being a huge airport with two terminals, far away from each other and with poor connections. The terminal itself feels run down and poorly managed, maybe due to poor management and lack of funding to keep up the maintenance. This is most apparent by the fact that the monorail system had been for quite a few months, and no sign of it being back to up and running again! We get a sad and troublesome bus transfer in between 2 terminals (still in T1, the main and the Satellite). To make 2 terminals out of one terminals, is already quite troublesome, and if you add broken down transport system, that's a nightmare! Each time I had to use this airport, there has not been one good memory, I feel sorry for Malaysia to have such a lack lustre international gateway to welcome their guests. All of their resources seems to go into T2, where is is a world of difference, but ironically, it's reserved for budget airlines.

"not a user friendly airport"

(Malaysia)

Trip Verified |  This is not a user friendly airport. The airport has some of poorest signages and I can't find my way to the lounge and boarding gate without asking the airport staffs. This really needs some serious improvements. Immigration and security are also somewhat slow with little to no help from staffs to guide us through everything. Staffs are nice in general but aren't helpful or has limited knowledge.

"the worst airport experience"

(Thailand)

Trip Verified | This is by far the worst airport experience I’ve ever had. 5pm they told us - no more taxis, order Grab but Airport WiFi doesn’t work. We spent 90mins at the passport control. Baggage collection area looked more like a street market, piles of bags everywhere. Never again !

"transit experience is an absolute joke"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | The transit experience is an absolute joke, especially the dining options. There are plenty of restaurants and supposedly great ones in the airport but certainly not on the transit side - there are just a few and they barely function. As a vegetarian, I could only find french fries for my long layover. The food is very mediocre, and I’m really trying to keep this review objective but it’s not been a fun experience.

"Very bad signage, very long walks"

(Malaysia)

Not Verified | This airport is absolutely terrible. Close to no service available. Extremely limited offer and low quality of food and beverage. Very bad signage, very long walks. I have been using this terminal too many times and I have enough of it. Anyway Air Asia operating the terminal being a very bad airline, I won't hopefully have to go back there ever again.

"a modest experience"

(Malaysia)

Trip Verified | This is my usual airport to travel out of Kuala Lumpur. This time I'm using the KLIA1 Domestic Terminal. Everything seem packed as everyone was about to leave Kuala Lumpur for General Election. I printed the boarding pass at kiosk. No problem at all. The immigration counter was fast. Using one of the toilet in the terminal - very clean. Bought a coffee at Gloria Jeans coffee, it's a good kiosk with a reasonable waiting time. Seats in the waiting area are full as the flight was full also. The seating was ok, modest. It was a modest experience for my airport journey.

"the hottest airport I have experienced"

(Malaysia)

Trip Verified | KLIA is the hottest airport I have experienced amongst all. A lot of improvement needed to be world class. How to promote tourism with this standard? 1st experience for tourist when arrived.
