"cheap flights but not much else"

Not Verified | We booked flights in January 2019 to Fairbanks for June 23 and a return flight from Vancouver for July 7. In late January or early February 2019 the return flights were cancelled, likely due to the grounding of the 737 MAX planes. We got those flights re-booked and about three days later the departing flights were cancelled and also had to be re-booked. This made us very nervous. The new flight times, the connections and layovers were much worse than the originals but the seats were good. Very few options were offered so we took what we could get. A delay was encountered on June 23 in Chicago. No food was on board and our Seattle flight was delayed for an hour. Thanks to a Seattle layover this did not cause us to miss a flight. When we showed up at the gate in Vancouver on July 7 we were directed to a gate agent who offered another change to Greenville with connections through DFW that they said would be great and save us a connection, a long layover and nine hours. We jumped at the chance to get home early with the understanding that the flight was not overbooked. We were then directed to get seat assignment at the gate. The Vancouver to DFW seating was terrible (last row, 30 A/B). The Greenville seats had me in 30F and my wife in 21 F. Those were great seats. Not. We were deceived at the gate by a the agent and his supervisor. The Vancouver to Dallas AA 979 leg on the return of this flight boarded and was ready to take off when the flight crew again announced that they did not have enough food (best guess soft drinks) on-board. The flight was delayed for over one hour while the crew waited for the caterer. This delay almost made me miss my connection to Greenville SC. The flight attendants handed out soft drinks like candy. The rest room lines were long and disruptive. We have never been so glad to get off of a flight in our lives. After being asked the flight attendants reluctantly asked passengers whose destination was DFW to stay seated so those with tight connections could disembark. Some complied, others did not. WHAT is going on at American? They seem to have cheap flights but not much else. They claim to be the largest carrier in the world. They need to concentrate on customer service and satisfaction.

"I don't like American Airlines"

Trip Verified | San Antonio to Dallas via Indianapolis. I don't like American Airlines. I have always found them to be rude and unhelpful. Checked in online before I got to the airport. Went to the rude ticked counter agent who told me I had to check in again. She refused to print a boarding pass. So I asked her what she was there to do. Apparently it was to put my bag on a conveyor belt. So whatever on that. Can't fix rude customer service people. I feel it in my heart that she had something to do with my bag getting lost. She had a spiteful attitude about her - if I pay 30.00 for my luggage I expect it to arrive with me intact. I left from San Antonio to Dallas. The gate where we landed was C11 and I was flying out of C10 to Indianapolis. 30+ minutes in between flights. I get to Indianapolis, no bag. I did receive a text from American saying that the bag was lost. I was not able to talk to a lost bag clerk because I had a shuttle waiting for me. I then go to the link in the text and start to fill out a claim- link is not working. I call 30 minute wait time. I guess this is how American airlines likes to operate. I only flew them because the company I work for bought the tickets.

"we were truly disappointed"

Trip Verified | We booked our honeymoon flight to Orlando with American Airlines and we were truly disappointed. The flight itself was not bad. However, seats are not assigned but rather purchased at ridiculous prices at check in. We forgot to check in 24 hours before our flight home and almost every seat was taken by the time we realized we hadn't checked in. Our only option to sit next to each other was in the emergency exit row and pay $81 each! If we didn't want to sit next to each other, we would have to pay $78. Why are we paying for a seat? Isn't that what the ticket was for? Checking in early allows you to pick a seat at $15-$20 but why were we "punished"? We will not be flying AA anytime soon.

"AA representatives are extremely unhelpful and rude"

Not Verified | Do not fly American Airlines! Our trip to and from Myrtle Beach was a disaster! They cancelled our flight home, we ended up having to spend the night in a hotel ($160 which we had to pay for) and flying to an airport two hours away from home. We then had to rent a car (another $165) and drive home. The AA representatives are extremely unhelpful and rude. I have flown other airlines and have never had an issue.

"the flight is cancelled"

Trip Verified | Kansas City to Charlotte. The flight was on time and soon as we are supposed to be boarding they pushed the boarding back 15 minutes talking about its a storm so they will let up know something at 5pm then text messages come to my phone saying departure is at 515 and then another came through shortly after with a departure time of 530. Once again shortly after that another message comes through saying that departure at 8pm then someone comes over the speaker stating that know there is maintenance issues and the flight is cancelled and we need to make are way to the outside counter to reschedule the flight because they was closing their counter. Rescheduled my flight for 12hrs later and they did not provide hotel or anything for the inconvenience if it was a maintenance issues as they stated. Definitely will not fly with them if i can help it.

"this airline is run by thieves"

Trip Verified | Philadelphia to Chicago. Never again will this airline get my business. Delayed 3x and then cancelled with NO help for accommodations from the very airline who caused the problem. NO weather problems. The return flight was delayed, bumped, and finally my seats were given to standby with the call center saying we were checked in and ready, and the counter agent saying another. Absolutely zero help in any way. Their solution? Sleep in the airport. With my kids?! I found another airline with the route we needed standing right there at the American check in counter. Will I see a penny of these cancelled and delayed flights? I doubt it, so as far as I'm concerned, this airline is run by thieves.

"Houston airport for 25 hours"

Trip Verified | Houston to Los Angeles. In Houston airport for 25 hours, they keep changing the depart time and no explanation. Not even once they explained whats going on, not even one of them asked if we need anything, its 10 of us and they keep delaying our flight.

"a truly horrible experience"

Trip Verified | London to Columbus via New York. I landed into JFK on time. While waiting for my connecting flight to CMH, it was delayed twice, then cancelled. I was rebooked the following day and had to pay for my own hotel since it was claimed to be 'weather' despite the fact that other airlines did not cancel the same route. I woke at 3 AM for my rebooked 5:45 AM flight to find that it was cancelled as well and rebooked for 2 days after the original flight. I was forced to rent a car and drive 9 hours to Columbus, OH in order to make a very important appointment on Tuesday, July 9th when my flight was originally scheduled for Saturday, July 6th. I am ashamed that in the future, I will have to fly a foreign airline in order to ensure that I get where I need to go. I will not risk flying with American again. This event overshadowed the fact that the seat was uncomfortable, the cabin staff rude and the food disappointing. This was a truly horrible experience.

"my flight was cancelled"

Trip Verified | I will never buy a ticket again with AA! I don't care if I pay more but I will book with an airline that really cares for people. My husband (in the navy) made it to the USA for his birthday, but thank you to American Airlines we could not be together, my flight was cancelled. It is not just today! In the last 2 months, my flight was cancelled twice. Last time it was cancelled in Boston. I missed two days at work (but AA seems does not care ).

"no one to help us reschedule our flights"

Trip Verified | Left Jackson, MS at 4.30pm and was scheduled to land at DFW with connecting flight to Burbank, CA. We got about 175 miles out of Dallas and were told there was a big thunder storm and we would have to circle. All departing flights were cancelled. After about 30 minutes, we were diverted to San Antonio for refueling. We sat on the tarmac for almost 2 hrs, were not allowed to deplane. The crew provided little or no information about other connections, but they were very clear that American Airlines would not cover overnight stay. We finally reached Dallas at 9.30pm. There was no one to help us reschedule our flights or help with hotel rooms and the ticketing counters were all closed. Passengers who checked their bags in the jetway (for no cost) were able to retrieve them. Those of us dummies who played by the rules and paid $30 to check a bag were told our luggage had to go all the way to the destination. I argued with an AA "Customer Service" agent in baggage that I needed the cpap machine in my bag, but she just quoted airline policy. I made my own hotel reservation, paid $50 for a taxi, repeated that the next morning, and flew back to Jackson, a flight I arranged on my own from my hotel room. No one from American Airlines tried to be helpful or provide any information, even to the poor young woman whose 1yr old baby was crying from hunger. Never again.
