"I prefer the openness of the pod"

(United States)

Trip Verified | I was initially worried about that older AA product and concerned that seating backward might be uncomfortable. It turns out that I prefer seating backward in lie flat position because of the angle of attack of the plane. Your head remains above your feat and it feels better. I also enjoy the fact that the seat does not have a footwell which usually feels cramped. On the other AA B777 seat configuration I keep banging my knees at the top of the footwell when I move. There is consequently a little less storage available but I prefer the openness of the pod configured that way.

"17" seats doesn't cut it"

(United States)

Not Verified | The seats are very narrow and big guy next to me extended several inches beyond. Most uncomfortable ride ever. the seats were redesigned recently to cram passengers. Love AA but now looking for more comfortable airline for international travel. 17" seats doesn't cut it!

"Appalling seat design"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Flying PHX-LHR, so long flight. Seat 39H I am 6'1", 210 lbs, so not outsize. Appalling seat design. Very narrow (10 abreast in a B777 should be a crime against humanity). Seat cushion surprisingly high, and, worse, rises when seat is reclined, jamming the knees against the back of the seat in front, and ensuring legs cannot be stretched under seat in front, making sleeping OR working virtually impossible - I am writing this sitting sideways, with legs and laptop in the aisle. Seat power supply does not appear to work. I normally fly BA on this route. The difference in seat quality is off the scale. Never again on AA.

"modern aircraft, poor service"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Good food, modern aircraft, poor service. To AA's credit, the food was good and plentiful. But the crew didn't care if I enjoyed the flight and didn't seem to enjoy their work. They actually seemed more like old, tired police officers whose main intent is to force compliance with the rules. Jaded, overworked, unsmiling, unhappy people who have made this trip thousands of times but for whom passengers seem like an impediment to ending the crew's workday. PA system was so weak that I could not hear the announcements. Also, the crew can control the window tint, which they kept blackened for almost the entire flight. That makes the window seats into dark, black holes which I will never intentionally use again. Infotainment system is awkward and unimaginative. 110v power outlet is very difficult to reach, hidden behind an armrest. Need to have more USB-C outlets. Work on the ground in Tokyo was handled by Japan Airlines staff, who worked hard and were presentable. Unless I'm using AA frequent flyer miles I will use JAL (or, for that matter, any other airline) for my next trip to Japan.

"miss the old AA economy seats"

(United States)

Not Verified | I miss the old AA economy seats with IFE. The new seats introduced a few years ago stripped out the IFE and some seat padding. The new seats do offer more storage though. The WI-FI on board still is okay but not the best. The seats are survivable for 4 hours and the device holder is handy. Legroom remains the same and the seat width is better than the 737. The A320 family fleet of American Airlines is usually more comfortable than their Boeing aircraft. I do prefer the older seats with IFE though.

"knees were jammed against the seat in front"

(United States)

Not Verified | I paid extra in order to select a seat for my wife and myself toward the front of the plane. ( I guess). Flight was from Philadelphia to Ft Lauderdale. There was certainly no extra room involved. I selected a window and middle seat. Row 14. Boarding was a nightmare. They board in groups 1-8. You have to pay $34.00 in order to board in an early group. Just selecting an "extra room" seat for 2 people adds over $100.00 minimum to your cost. Otherwise you board, NOT from back to front, but apparently when you bought your ticket. You are allowed a carry on. except if you are in boarding groups 7 or 8. At the gate you will be told that if you are in groups 7 or 8, you must check your carry on.(Happens on full or nearly full flights). Since you selected a window seat you expect a window. Not on American. They jam so many rows on to the plane that about 30% of the window seats don't actually align with a window, so you are jammed against a blank bulkhead. No seat back entertainment. I am 6'1", so I don't consider myself overly tall. My knees were jammed against the seat in front of me, to the point where I could not really even access the seat pocket in front of me. The tray table was up against my chest. Not a great way to fly for 3 hours. For the way you get treated by this airline, you might as well fly Spirit or some other budget carrier and save on the fare. There is NOT comparison between this airline and competitors Delta, Jetblue, and United. Never again.

"Limited legroom for economy seats"

(United States)

Not Verified | Seat 19C. Limited legroom for the economy seats. Wifi was ok but kicked me off more than once. The amount of recline seems to be about 10-15 degrees. Person in from of me reclined and almost caught my iPad. Width was normal for an economy seat. The seat was clean.

American Airlines customer review

(United States)

Trip Verified | The seats are confusing. They do not match the outside row. 22 window seats match to 21 center row. Several people sat in the wrong seat — me too. Also center row seats E & G straddle a bar supporting the seat in front. So my underseat bag was placed weirdly, partly on my neighbors feet. The seats are narrower than the seats in my first leg of this trip. Otherwise its airy and as is customary - a half pinky finger biscuit with a beverage. Service is excellent!

"smallest width seats possible"

(United States)

Not Verified | Literally the smallest width seats possible. Sitting in the seat and the arm rest can't even go fully down. I'm 6'2", 220lbs. The oppression next to me weighs more and has an even wider hip span. We are sitting on top of each other to fit in the seats.
