Munich Airport

Free coffee/tea stations were a major plus. Number of toilets were only downside of the experience. Also hour long commuter train ride into the city with no toilets on board was another 'sore' point!

Connected through Munich last summer. The airport has a very weird layout. It has at least five levels and they force you to go up and down a lot. When you get off the plane you have to take elevator/escalator to go to the top level then you have to go down a couple of levels to reach the security check area which is a very small room packed with people The queues were long and slow. We had a long layover so we decided to go to the city for sightseeing. Fortunately the immigration lines were short and once you are outside it's much nicer. There were lots of restaurants in the car rental area. After spending few hours sightseeing we got back to the airport. Again the security lines were long and slow. Inside the secure area food choices are not that great. You again have to climb on escalators/stair to go to the boarding area. But to board the plane you have to go down the stairs/escalators. This going up and down is very inconvenient especially if you have a lot of carry on luggage or kids travelling with you.

We departed on the 1st Jan 2015 and it was a busy day however we checked the luggage in the morning when it was empty and took boarding pass in the afternoon. Tax free and custom were very good no queuing. Security check is excellent. Inside the terminal newspaper tea and coffee are served FOC. Just simple and effective! One of the best airports in the world. Only boarding sequence is not very effective since children do not get priority.

I transited through Munich airport on 22/07/2014 with Lufthansa. Had to wait several minutes for a bus to take passengers to terminal. Not sure if this lack of an airbridge was due to our 40 minute delay in leaving London Heathrow. Once in terminal transit experience is very smooth with information screens and signs clearly indicating where you need to go. No further immigration or security screens for our transit. Toilets clean and plentiful with really cool hand dryers! Plenty of seating at the departure gates. Wide walkways surrounded by the usual shops. Baggage was transferred from our incoming to outgoing flight without problem so well done to the ground handlers whoever they are. Boarding gate staff pleasant. As to be expected usual expensive prices for food and drink: 1 tea 2 cappuccino's and what was described as a cheese 'paninni' came to just over £20 (I'm not kidding). I would happily transit through Munich airport again.

This airport has a very messy lay out. I rarely get lost in airports but did so twice here. Despite following the signs to check in I was unable to find it without asking. Signs seem to be pointing in opposite directions frequently. You need to be prepared to do lot of walking and the rollaters never seem to work in the direction I am walking in. Once gone through security you arrive in a hall (mine is gate C) with almost no facilities and not a lot of seating. The toilet are in the basement and you need to take an elevator to get to them. Boarding requires to go around two corners and is very slow. I will do my best to avoid MUC at all cost in the future.

Boarding process is terrible. Buses to the plane? I can't remember the last time I had to do that in a first world country. Never in the US in the last 20 years. Even Washington Dulles have up on that long ago. I helped an older woman carry her bag down three flights of stairs.

Very good services clear indications large spaces with seats in waiting areas good shops and food availability.

Very convenient and clean airport. Security and border control procedures are fast and well organized. The navigation inside the airport is intuitive and well thought-through. Public areas are a little bit narrow which causes crowdedness when several flights arrive or depart at one specific departure zone. The downside is the lack of good restaurants and shops to spend time at - just a typical row of cafeteria and duty frees. Free internet kiosks are available as well as free wi-fi. All in all a very pleasant airport definitely the best I've been to in Germany.

I visited Munich as a transfer stop only and it was a tight turnaround but I made my connection and so did my bag. The passport control security people that I encountered were apathetic and arrogant I am sad to say. I inadvertently got into a line for EU passports only and needed to go to the back of the "All Passport" line even though my flight was boarding by that time. I felt that if I said anything the situation would only get worse because they didn't seem to care whether I made my flight or missed it. The shops were beautiful but I had no time to stop and visit because I needed to run to make my connection. Again I am grateful that my bag made it to my connecting flight. But my experience would have been much better if there was someone out front directing passengers to appropriate lines or if all queues could handle all passports. Or at least showed that they cared.

I have travelled through Munich for connecting flights several times and each time I marvel at how efficient it is (perhaps I have been lucky!). I travel to Lisbon from the UK and I always look for the Munich connection as the whole experience is so much more pleasurable! In the 'G' gate zones they provide free tea coffee hot chocolate and papers which I think is so great! This doesn't seem to have been rolled out in the 'H' zone yet but I'm hoping this is just a matter of time. I also think the 'nap caps' for sleep are a great idea although there are not enough of them. I had a problem with my ticket - my husband managed to book a return flight for march instead of February! This was quickly and efficiently sorted out by a very helpful team at the Lufthansa desk (Feb 10th). Munich gets my vote of confidence.
