"worse than many third world airports"

Trip Verified | It is a long time since I had arrived at the international terminal at Melbourne. The first problem was, despite my aircraft arriving on time, my aircraft having to wait about 15 minutes for the gate to be free - poor apron coordination. There was then a very long walk to get to the first immigration kiosks (only a small number of kiosks) which had huge queues which I bypassed then another fairly longish walks to the final immigration kiosks which again had queues and again only a small number of kiosks. The actual immigration gates had no queues due to the limited number of kiosks meaning everyone was waiting in queues at the kiosks. The baggage carousel that was allocated to my flight also had bags arriving from 2 other flights which mean that bags were piling up high on the carousel and it was very difficult to retrieve some bags in the top area of the carousel and other passengers were having to help people to retrieve their bags - it is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt trying to retrieve their bag in this type of situation. Long walks were required in the customs/biosecurity queue lanes - firstly having to go back around the baggage carousels and then going one way then back the other way in the queue lane - the area needs to be redesigned. All in all worse than many third world airports. I think that people from other countries must get a rude shock on their first arrival at Melbourne airport.

"3rd world standards"

Not Verified | I am astonished at the international arrivals terminal facilities, APAM had the opportunity during covid to upgrade what has been a disgrace for years but has done nothing. They encourage new carriers into Melbourne, spend money on creating Duty Free expansion and retail revenue but have no clear plan for what is a logistical nightmare to the traveling community. Snaking queues "controlled" by bollards with no signage at quarantine, carousels blocked off by thousands of confused and angry travellers is how we welcome people to Melbourne. 3rd world standards, filthy toilets and rude ABF staff is a disgrace.

"everything feels outdated"

Trip Verified | Chaotic queuing system (group check-ins mixed in with solo/family). No automated check-ins & drop-offs to ease congestion. Signage for directions can be improved eg. One lady going to Perth only on a Perth/London leg couldn’t go thru automated gate as she didn’t have her passport. Atmosphere feels dark & gloomy (lacks entertainment area for kids, seating at gates confusing). Limited and overpriced food & drinks (with some food shops located far away from seating area). No charging stations (phones, tablets catering different charging devices). No workstations or benches to do work while waiting. Cleanliness is not great. Overall everything feels outdated (a definite negative customer experience)

"Signage is disgraceful"

Trip Verified | Signage is disgraceful, this is the worst in all my many travels. Fair size electronic signs (in some places, but not enough) with little "T2" in yellow in one corner. What's wrong with maximum size "T2 International" ? Passageway international/domestic and reverse, is confusing and open to weather! Weird to say the least. Aside from signage, its a dingy maze

"dated, dark and dirty"

Trip Verified |  Worst airport in Australia for international travel. Most retail closed on a sunday afternoon departure. Hardly any food choices unless you want over priced pub food, 4 day old sandwiches or dirty burger king in a seating area that hasnt been cleaned. No ATMs on the departure side of terminal unless you want to get ripped off by prosegur. They seem to have spent all this money on upgrades that have achieved nothing.. it looks dated, dark and dirty.

"ashamed of the substandard airport facilities"

Trip Verified | This is a disgrace, as an Australian I am deeply ashamed of the substandard airport facilities and condition. Arrival via vehicles taxi, private car or bus because of deals done with car park operators and bus line no rail. Security a farce. Inadequate number of machines staff poorly trained. No power recharge facilities in international gate area. We gathered around a cleaners vacant electrical socket. Profiteering off a public facility has to cease. Ripped seats rusting rooves, rubbish not collected because understaffed.

"continues to be a disgrace"

Trip Verified | Melbourne Airport, the international piece at least, continues to be a disgrace. Arrived at 04:00, already checked in, so I was in the queue for departures security at 04:05. There were already some hundreds of people in the queue, which wasn’t moving. No movement until 04:20. No announcements, no information and as usual, no staff to ask. As a gateway airport, Melbourne should be significantly more professional than it is.

"disappointing advert for visitors"

"airport never fails to underwhelm"

This airport never fails to underwhelm me whenever I am traveling. It is by far the worst airport I’ve been to having been to many countries. The lighting and the fittings look dated and tired. It’s like stepping into an era from a different generation. Besides that, it looks dirty and the bathrooms smell like pee anytime I dared to venture in there. Furthermore, the retail shops and restaurants shut down as if they were operating on normal hours depriving travelers from getting any last minute items or having a break somewhere when waiting for flights or traveling at odd hours. I’ve never seen retail doors shut in any airport I’ve been anywhere in the world. It’s just not a pleasant experience being at the Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. Whenever I am there, I can’t wait just to leave to my next destination. Other airports have art exhibits, water features, movie theatres, amazing retail and food outlets and we’re here still talking about the pee smell at the Melbourne Airport.
