Frankfurt Main Airport

What an awful airport. It's huge. The signage isn't great. Checking in with Lufthansa is all automated so it can be confusing and time consuming for the first time user. Don't bother asking any airline staff member to help you - they were rude and didn't help. Getting on to a flight is ridiculous - wait in a crowded departure lounge then finally scan your Boarding Pass only to be stopped just beyond the boarding gate to wait (again getting crowded) rather than let you board the plane. Arriving into Terminal 1 is even more illogical. Follow the signs to Immigration and Baggage Reclaim. Immigration is straight forward but next is Customs before reclaiming your bags. To get to the Baggage Reclaim you have to continue walking beyond Customs where you'll find yourself in the Check In area of the airport. Finally the Reclaim is down into an unsecured area and once you have your bags walk back out into the Check In area. The whole path is convoluted and illogical.

A big disappointment for an airport (and host airline) claiming to strive to be one of the best transfer spots. FRA is very user unfriendly if you are transferring most of T1 is outdated has the 70s feeling to it and gets extremely crowded in the security areas where long walks/rides are required flying in from London 1.5 hrs transfer time to another Schengen destination (Ljubljana) was barely enough with no time left to browse which is a shame as the airport claims to be a transfer wonder. In addition the signs can be confusing too. Munich is much more user friendly and convenient.

As a frequent Star Alliance (Lufthansa) customer in Europe I often transit through this airport. First the good points: The shops and it's clean! Now the bad points: Long bus rides long walks (or runs usually) long queues. Overpriced refreshments no decent restaurants airside. Security extremely crowded especially morning and early evening. Don't expect respite in the Star Alliance lounges! Terrible directions and unfriendly (and often clueless) staff. On the subject of security why must you go through again when transferring from a non-Schengen flight? Nowhere else in Europe must you do this. Do they help you when you have 12 minutes to catch your next flight? If you are lucky they will direct you to the "Fast Lane" to stand for 30 minutes with all of the other people who also have 12 minutes too! My advice if you are travelling Lufthansa through Europe from or to beyond then try Munich.

I used this airport as a transit on a flight from Edinburgh / Frankfurt / Moscow. My baggage along with at least 3 others were left in Frankfurt. It took two days for my baggage to be delivered to my residence in Moscow. On the return flight I was informed by Moscow Duty Free that a purchase of gin was fine to be hand carried as it was packed and sealed by Duty Free Moscow. In the security check in Frankfort transit area I was treated like a criminal by Frankfurt Security who confiscated the gin called the police subjected me to a completely over the top personal search took my wallet and insisted it be returned through the x-ray machine whilst forbidding me to leave the area where I was being held. They were offhand rude and lacking in personal skills. I would add that the walking required between flights is extremely long with no moving walkways. I will take steps in the future to avoid Frankfurt Airport where possible.

Not my favorite airport ugly building long walking distances with ridiculous short travelators no decent restaurant in transit zone. Very unfriendly staff at security check. This is not based on a one time experience. Today I flew with Lufthansa and had a transit in Frankfurt when boarding the flight we must scan our boarding tickets via the automated gates ourselves. For some passengers this was not so straightforward the staff member at the gate clearly lost his nerves and was scolding these people. We are customers in the first place is a little bit of help and a smile too much to ask?

If you are transiting at Frankfurt give yourself at least 2 hours because this is not a friendly airport the walks are very long no one is around to help and if they do they are very rude. I walked past 6 Lufthansa so called 'service centres' on my way to the gate of my connecting flight but all were closed. Why do they put them there if they are closed? I do not know what it is but some staff at the airport are just very rude and not willing to help. Frankfurt makes Miami and CDG look friendly and efficient. Avoid this airport if you can.

This is the worst airport we have ever used I pre arranged disabled assistance for my wife but at check-in I was rudely told that we should have known there was a separate 'Holding Area' for my wife and advised it would be 10 minutes walk away. Once we got there we waited 30 minutes before for help arrived this was a complete disgrace. I then requested to be taken to the business class lounge which was met with grunts from the helper staff were unhelpful and the airport was difficult to navigate.

We flew from JFK to FRA to transfer to BEG. It's been several months and I still wonder if traipsing through that airport was a bad dream I don't understand how we made our connection. If Germany is known for it's efficiency then this airport must be the black hole where they dump all of their 'inefficiencies'. There does not seem to be any real flow sometimes we didn't understand if we were to go straight or veer to the right. We walked took a bus went around a building (outside) stairs stairs walking took a quick restroom break where I had to wait to wash my hands while an airport staff member brushed her teeth. I would have liked to check out the shops etc. but with all the schlepping I didn't want to miss my flight. Ironically I plan to travel through FRA again this January - I want to fly on the 747-800 so we'll see if it's worth it. Hopefully since I'll be on LH through to BEG my schlep time will be cut and I can shop.

Flew into Frankfurt from Florence and connected to Air Canada to Montreal. We landed in Frankfurt the plane taxied awhile before it parked on the tarmac. Deplaned to a bus and the bus took a long run to Terminal 1. My guess is that commuter flights get relegated to the remote areas of the airport without a direct jet way connection to the terminal. We then went into the terminal and tried to find our connecting gate. The first set of monitors did not have our flight listed. So we found another set of monitors and the flight was listed but only Terminal 1 Gate B. But it did not say which gate so we had to take the elevator to B and then a series of people movers to get to B. Finally get to B and our flight is not listed. We finally got to the gate. First you check in with the agent who checks your passport. Then when the plane boards you check in again with an agent who just looks at your boarding pass and then with another agent who inputs you manually in the computer. They did not scan the boarding pass. This was very inefficient. Frankfurt is a huge airport so leave plenty of time to get to your connecting flight. If you have to change terminals good luck! The airport itself of modern and clean with good bathrooms. So if you have plenty of time to get to your connecting flight and use the automated kiosk if your flight is not listed this is not a bad airport.

Having travelled from Orlando to Frankfurt for 9 hours we had the displeasure of encountering border control officers as we made our way to our connecting flight to England. They were very vague as to what we should remove from our bags to put in the trays for x-ray. I asked if we had to remove cables and wires and they did not answer so we left them in as you do on US flights. They then insisted that I empty a bag containing underwear in front of them. They then took my husband into a private room while they searched his bag. Surely a bit of kindness and common courtesy wouldn't go amiss? Later at the gate they asked over 150 of us to queue to have our boarding passes checked with our passports. We then sat down only to be asked to get up immediately to have boarding passes checked again as we boarded. It was laughable. We will not use Lufthansa or Frankfurt Airport again.
