Vienna Airport

Traveled here from Brussels. The airport is extremely well sign posted and the instant you clear customs and get into arrivals a sign points you to where you need to go. The coolest way to get to downtown is to take the high speed train which can make the journey in 15 minutes two trains per hour. You can buy the tickets in advance on line along with Vienna city transport passes. The airport has comfy couches in departures (albeit a limited number) a very wholesome and reasonably priced hot buffet and charming gift shops.

Terrible airport. Small cramped abject lack of seating in Departure areas. Also the security check is performed as you enter the gate so you can't take your own drinks on to the plane with you. A complete joke of an airport!

Everything was OK on the way there. I had to wait in Vienna for some hours but it was quite pleasant in Senator Lounge on terminal G. A big disappointment on the way back! I had to wait again for some hours at Vienna airport for my Adria Airways flight to Ljubljana. Slovenia is Schengen country and Adria is Star Alliance member but the passengers are leaving from Terminal B which is the most abandoned Terminal at Vienna Airport. I had to go to Terminal B. Quite an expedition! More than 15 minutes walk through all corridors of Vienna airport through Customs control luggage pick up etc to the old part of the airport. I am asking myself why Adria flight for Slovenia is not leaving Terminals F or G (I noticed the flight for Zagreb was leaving from G - and Croatia is not yet Schengen country!) but from abandoned Terminal B?

Super efficient check in and security area - most passengers expected to queue for security but were through in under a minute. Once past security I was disappointed at the lack of places to eat drink and shop. Very limited choices means you should expect to pay over inflated prices for sandwiches meals drinks and water! Duty free food and toilet queues seem to mingle into one mess. An OK place if you are not here for long but an awful place if you are in transit for a long period.

Smallish attractive airport and there were no delays of any kind on both arrival and departure. Although this may well be a perfect stress-free airport for many passengers the design makes it the sort of airport which I really dislike because although there are plenty of shops and facilities in the central area after boarding pass control once you go through passport control to the gates you are stuck there with very little in the way of shops and restaurants and - of course - you don't know this until after having gone through.

Used new terminal last week. Arrived late evening and departed evening. The new terminal is functional. One has to go up 2 floors for departure gates escalators and lifts are available but could be a problem for passengers with mobility issue. The decor is grey/black and white all around which does not cheer you up! Plenty of seats and good catering facilities available near departure gates. Duty free shopping could not attract me.

Cold impression caused by using only using black many flavours of grey and white. Poor signs only the gate numbers are displayed monitors indicating the flight are not in the corridors but above the desks at the gate. Boarding is rather chaotic because everybody is already standing up because of lack of seats at the gate causing a boarding queue in the central corridor. Electronic boarding gates out of service and only one member of staff was present at the gate to verify the boarding passes. Flew from Schengen to non-Schengen and transit was very fast-stayed in transit area. Transit from non-Schengen to Schengen brings you to the exit and the check-in area where you have to undergo the whole procedure of showing your boarding pass and security check causing unnecessary stress. Security staff friendly and swift. To be honest I liked the old terminal more.

They must have used a color blind architect for the new terminal only blacks greys and whites are used but it still can be impressive. Interesting range of seats and couches available air side while waiting to board. Overall a friendly good and speedy service. Problem areas: no post office poor signs both on arrival and departure and very expensive food air side. I flew with Austrian and the way in which passengers entered the plane from the gate was rather disorganized There is a McDonald's and Spar shop on the ground side. Positives: good ground links with Vienna and Bratislava. I did not see any security or police around on the ground side unlike most other airports.

New terminal but a strangely stressful experience. Poor décor does not help. Get through departures as quickly as possible to your departure gate.

The new Vienna international airport terminal is open in case you did not recognize it as a new airport. It looks (and feels) more like a new government administrative building on which clearly every expense has been spared. Designed in 50 shades of grey with no useful signage lounges so difficult to find (a huge sign pointing in the opposite direction) that you will be so relieved to sit down you will not mind that they are woefully undersized.
