Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport customer review

(United States)

My experiences with Sheremetyevo airport were all very good but I was always traveling first class so didn't have lines to wait in or deal with much else of what I saw. I understand the "surreal" experience described in another review. My first trip to Moscow was like that too but later on it all seemed much more normal.

HEL-SVO-SVX. Arrived late evening on Aeroflot flight from Helsinki via pier in Termanal D. Reasonable walk to Passport Control which is now all electronic no need to complete Landing Card data already captured and available as part of Visa Application Process. Minimal Queuing before heading down escalators to Baggage Claim. Short Wait for bags then past Customs and out into Arrivals Hall. Difficult to find official taxi's which are very expensive. Return Check in is after initial bag scanning. Check-in OK as was Security. Domestic Departures are separate to International Departures. Choice of 2 eating options and various shops some of which not fully open early in the morning. Free WiFi which was pretty good. Boarding started just prior to departure time but was done quite quickly. Terminal has been upgraded or something recently so things in reasonable condition flat screen monitors with departure information on as well as TV News screens reasonably available. Everything quite clean and well looked after.

I did a transit through Moscow Sheremetyevo on a PEK-FCO return flight. Both times the transit took ages (on my way back the passport control desk was closed and 20 people had to wait for about 15 minutes as staff were on a break. The transit desk was understaffed and the two women working there were unfriendly. Other than that the facilities are ok free internet with good speed throughout the terminals D E and F and a decent selection of shops and restaurants.

This is my second time here in 10 years - both experiences awful. I've travelled extensively and as a result experienced more than 30 airports of all sizes and ages. This is by far the worst airport. The staff invariably rude food overpriced no rest area for people in transit duty free subpar selection limited. I can't stress enough how rude people are here. Avoid at all cost unless of course you find a really great flight deal with a layover at SVO.

The departure Terminal D is modern and well-designed. There is a need that everything from outside go through screening at all entry points. Free WiFi. Inside I dealt with SAS and terminal officialdom - terrible! It seems SAS has entered an agreement with Aeroflot to use the terminal but at the cost that bag drop is unavailable until a strict two hours before departure. The difficulty is that road traffic to and from Sheremetyevo is notoriously unreliable and can take three or even four hours one way. So passengers are forced to schedule extra time and then the rigidities (and rudeness) commence. Maybe I should feel lucky they let me inside the terminal from the outdoor cold (and that seemed their attitude). Early online check-in doesn't matter. Perhaps you've a nice lounge to go to inside? Too bad. Nobody will pretend to care - SAS staff have developed the cold attitude of Russian officials.

Arrived as a transit passenger in Terminal F and departing from Terminal D. Transit process handled seamlessly and well. Had to wait about five hours in Business lounge for onward flight. Lounge had good computer access and reasonable food. Everything was cleaned and it worked to give me a rest before the next flight.

Never again. I will do anything to avoid this airport. I didn't have to deal with getting from one terminal to another but I was just in transit for 6 hours. Arrived just after midnight in the new terminal. It's nice and clean and there is seating in the transit area and a restroom but that's it!! It's not that the places were closed there are none. Nowhere to get coffee or water or anything to eat I didn't see a smoking lounge anywhere and the few staff who were around spoke almost no English were unhelpful bordering on rude. Luckily there was free wifi.

Landed in Terminal F to large queues for a security check with serious looking women who spoke absolutely no English and made no attempt to. On getting through the terminal was full of smoke as there are no smoking areas just essentially tables with ashtrays that aren't separated from the main terminal. I was unaware that I was in Terminal F at the time and knew my next flight went from Terminal F so I went to the area which said "Transfer to Terminal F". Asked a person behind the desk who pointed at the departures boards and said "That isn't part of my job". Another refused to/couldn't talk English so I had to go on the free Wifi (the one positive of the airport) where I could use GPS to find out that I was actually in terminal F (the mind boggles as to why it claims there's a transfer to F). There's no free drinking water the shops are all terrible the terminal is badly designed and there's not enough space. I've been to close to one hundred airports including rural Chinese airports but this one is the worst I have ever been to. Never again!

(This review pertains to Terminal F). Seating: there is virtually none on the first floor. Architects did not allow for the numerous (and terribly overpriced) duty-free shops that have been added since. That left a very narrow passage almost completely devoid of any facilities except for a couple of bathrooms and some broken currency exchange machines. You can go to the second floor - there aren't any seats there either but at least there aren't any duty free shops so you can camp out on the floor. For that reason the second-floor gallery looks like a refugee camp. Transfer times: you are forced to have your passport and boarding pass checked before being allowed to proceed to your gate. No line there as such just a crowd of desperate passengers and a lone staff member who tends to take long breaks. If you're desperate and your flight is leaving soon push your way to the counter. Boarding areas are actually enclosed and guarded and you are not allowed into that area - which is unfortunate because they have seats there - until shortly before the flight. They do not announce flights so make sure to make regular runs between departures/arrivals board and the gate to makes sure you're still departing from that gate - ask the staff. Otherwise the flight may leave without you.

Lounges sometimes are packed both in terminals D and F with no tables available especially in the morning on workdays or late in the evening in the weekends. Airport staff is the same as many years ago nothing is changing. Taxi service is like in the 3rd world. They should have established a normal taxi service outside the door. The major problem of Sheremetyevo is transportation. From 5 passenger terminals and 1 cargo the road to Moscow is going though a 1-line overpass which is linking to a 3 line bridge of the one of the most busiest highways to St Petersburg so in most cases people are spending a long time just to leave the airport. This is outrageous. I've not seen it elsewhere in the world so that 6 terminals would be serviced by 1-line overpass. Waiting in a traffic jam next to the airport for an hour on Saturday night after a 2weeks' vacation is crossing everything out the very few positive things.
