Arrived 1 hour prior to departure for a Stuttgart to Vienna flight that left in early morning (6:50 am) and could not get through the check in process before the flight departed. We weren't the only ones. Germanwings has a batch of flights leaving around this time from its Stuttgart hub, and seemed completely unable to deal with the challenge of processing the large number of passengers quickly enough. Germanwings personnel were behind the ticket windows, behind the security screeners, and made no attempt to organize or prioritize passengers waiting to check in so that people could make their flights. Security responsible for screening passengers before check-in were the only personnel managing the cue, and they were indifferent to passengers who were missing their flights. So it was a pretty bad experience which tarnished my view of this airline, which I had flown before without incident. Still, I am a slave to price and would fly them again if the price were right. The following caveat would apply: I would avoid early morning flights out of their hubs, if at all possible, or at the very least , allow for more time to check in.

HAM-LGW return. Both flights on time, almost brand new aircraft, pleasant service and good value compared with BA or Lufthansa to LHR. Only downside is that legroom seems a bit tight (I'm 6 ft) and that Gatwick Airport always annoys me - dingy compared to HAM and long walks from the Satellite to the immigration (why to the moving walkways never work?).

Stansted to Cologne. Very impressed with this airline. Flight left on time with no problems. Clean plane and pleasant staff. The flight was short, but there was enough time to have a snack and a beer. Other airlines, especially Ryanair should take note of this, they could learn something about customer care. Overall I was happy with the flight, service & cost.

Stansted to Cologne and back. All was well - the flights were both on time, luggage appeared swiftly - no problems. Planes seemed well cared for. Didn't try the food, so can't comment. reasonably comfy seat for the relatively short flights - I even managed to doze off on the way back. Would happily travel with them again.

Used German Wings several times from Zagreb to CGN and been highly impressed. Always been on time. Planes in good order. Properly trained efficient and pleasant staff in contrast to the Ryanair ones that seem as if they were recruited in the pub half an hour before the flight. Regular airline quality at reasonable prices. Surprised at some people's comments on dear food. Their Eur5 food deal of a good quality sandwich, bar of chocolate and a proper sized bottle of beer (not some little bottle specially produced for ripping people off) always seems quite fair. I happily recommend them. CGN is also vastly better than most low cost airline hubs.

Flight out Gatwick to Bremen really good. Return flight a nightmare. My seat was locked in an upright position. Woman if front once ariborn flung her seat back, cracked my knees and refused to put her seat in a more upright position. Hence with the lack of legroom I could not put my book in front of me to read, no way could I buy any food or drink. It made the complete return trip a thoroughly unpleasant experience. thank goodness it was only an hour and a half's trip! Will carry on using German Wings because it is better that Easyjet Luton to Bremen

First time on German Wings on a flight from Cologne to Rome. As a business traveler it is unusual to board without a seat assigned, but we know where the good seats are (on the Airbus A 20 rows 12 and 13 - emergency exits). Seems that boarding pass numbers, are assigned by price of the ticket and not check-in time. You board by number and it is usually 30 numbers in one 'go'. Flight to Rome was fully booked, but I did not feel more cramped than on any expensive Lufthansa flight with the same seat configuration. Seats were leather and new. Airplane was very clean and appeared also new. Food is expensive, but you can take a sandwich from the airport with you. Drinks are 4 EUR, coffee 2,50 EUR. Both flights were on time and even with a delay on the flight out, we landed ahead of schedule. Baggage was delivered quickly. Boarding was quick and efficient. Considering the huge price difference and usually bad service on a Lufthansa flight, I will always prefer German Wings !

DUB-CGN-DUB and was very impressed. Most of the time I fly with Aer Lingus and have flown with Ryanair once and Germanwings compare very well. The entire package is excellent from check-in to baggage claim I could not find a fault. The catering is just a little expensive and not as high quality as some other airlines. If you are going to sell it at least make it eatable. Id certainly recommend them though.

Due to fly Hamburg to Gatwick yesterday but adverse weather conditions caused a delay of 20+ hours. If a company can be judged on it's response to problems German Wings is bottom of the heap. Our group had a dreadful experience due to the incompetent, uncaring, unprofessional people employed by German Wings. They might be cheap but when it goes wrong they are useless.

Flew Germanwings to Cologne from EDI - superb. Best budget-airline I've flown, they could teach some more established big airlines a thing or 2. Plane was quite full, but seats seamed bigger & legroom was pretty good. Staff were great, not a problem. Would certainly use them again - I just wish they would add more routes to Scotland - its just as easy & often cheaper to book a less pleasurable flight with KLM / BA / Lufthansa & have baggage checked through to final destination.

The best German no-frill airline - in my opinion. I've flown the Dresden DRS to Cologne CGN and DRS to Stuttgart STR routes and not had any problems. Always on time, friendly and helpful staff, new and comfortable aircraft.

Berlin (SXF) to Munich. SXF is a typical low cost airport with amenities and procedures tailored for the needs of easyjet, ryanair etc. This makes check-in, security and boarding pretty swift and easy. Germanwings does not provide allocated seating so there is the usual rush at the boarding gate. The cabin looked a little 'tired' but was clean and the seats were comfortable. The crew were chatty and worked hard on this brief (50 mins) and almost fully booked flight. I tried a 'Happy Snack' from the Skybistro (sandwich, candy bar an one drink @ 5€). The captain keept everyone on board well informed about the route and other flight data. Landing in Munich was on time, however the bus ride to the terminal seemed rather long.

Hamburg to Oslo on Dec 27th. Check-in was quick and efficient. No complains or excess baggage discussions about my 24kg suitcase. Crew at the gate handled the crowd which jumped out of their seats when the aircraft arrived at the gate quite professional and explained the boarding procedures very detailed. So boarding was quite smooth. Brand new A 319 looked great and the grey leather seats were really comfortable, although seat pitch was small. Crew was excellent and extremely friendly. A perfect mix of being casual and professional. Special requests for baby diapers were fulfilled immediately. Broad choice of food and beverages for purchase (3 kinds of beer) at fair prices. Funny to see, that catering trolleys were from Lufthansa. Captain gave some information before descend into Oslo. In general, it was an excellent value for money. Unfortunately, we had to wait quite long for our luggage which might not be the airlines fault.

We took our first flight with German Wings from Cologne to Nice in new A319 in early December 2005. Having flown into Cologne from Gatwick on an Easyjet A319 we are able to offer a valid comparison of the two Airlines. Both were very well priced, both flights were on time. German Wings offered one huge advantage, the seats (142 on German Wings, 154 on Easyjet). Significantly wider than those on Easyjet (to the detriment of aisle width) and with a much superior seat pitch that the two fewer rows enable, Great for me as I have long legs and nothing like as uncomfortable if the person in front of you reclines his seat. The cabin crew were nicely dressed, pleasant and helpful. I do find Easyjet seem to employ a scruffy bunch, or is it the Uniform? We did get caught out with German Wings 8 kilograms cabin bag weight limited especially as Easyjet now set a limit which is virtually what you can lift into the overhead locker unaided. Having said that I do wonder what would happen in strong turbulence with all those heavy bags being thrown against the locker catches.

SXF-DUS and back with Germanwings. Standard no-frills airline with the usual pros and cons. Boarding procedure was handled in 3 groups going by ticket number - later check-in, later boarding. They allow 8 kilo hand baggage which is better than most full price airlines though. Airplane was clean and spacious enough (A319), food and drinks on board not really cheap (5 EUR per baguette) but not too expensive either. Hardly anyone bought anything, which I found rather unusual.

My favourite European budget airline. Always on time (although this is often because of the usual budget airline trick of making the timeframe much longer than the actual flight time needed!). Good staff and service that treats you like a passenger and not cargo. Fabulous prices (I often pay just €20-25 one way, never paid more than €40). Pity they changed the website and don't show the final price up front any more. Once they rescheduled a flight an hour forwards and tracked me down by phone while I was on holiday after I had not replied their email for a few days - that's service. Unlike most people here who seem to prefer allocated seats, I really like the free seating system - you can avoid big and loud people and babies this way. Never noticed a scrum because of this.

Stansted to Cologne round trip. Very nice A319, comfy seats. Staff very good, food and ice creams served at very reasonable prices. Check in at Stansted a bit crowded, but this was due to lengthy lines for easy jet check in. German Wings only have four check in desks, and the overflowing easy jet check in can make them difficult to get to. Check in at Cologne, a doddle. We arrived over three hours before our flight, but we checked in straight away. Highly recommend this airline, will be using them again.

One way CGN-HEL. CGN is a fine airport, well reachable, reasonable parking, etc. Check in went smoothly, security check as well. Boarding fine as well, better system than all other low cost airlines. New airbus 319, fine seating (leather chairs and lots of legroom, even for someone like me (1m87)) and courteous crew. Once in the air they offered drinks and food for reasonable prices. Flight was smooth and I managed to catch some sleep. Pilot kept us informed throughout the journey, landing was good, especially under the (cross) windy conditions at HEL. Would fly them again and felt safe throughout the journey.

DUB-CGN and return in July. Part of the reason for travelling was that they offered one of cheapest fares out of Dublin to a major city on the European mainland. Had the change travel dates at the last minute and was treated very courteously by their call centre. Flights were on time in both directions, crew were professional and aircraft comfortable. Their on-board menu is reasonably priced and Cologne is a pleasant hassle-free airport. If they allocated seating they would be much better than many so-called full service airlines!

STN-STR, and back. Good flights both ways-crews helpful and flights not entirely full. Walk to/from plane at STN and bus at STR. Being early arrivers at check-in at STR meant we were on the first bus (board bus by ticket number). Happy snack excellent value. Luggage fast in both directions- fares cheap. Legroom better than BA- 319 each way

Edi/Cologne return. A319 out, A320 back, both extremely clean and with good legroom - only fault is no seat allocation and with the German reluctance to queue in an orderly manner, resulted in the usual scrum. £80 return - good value when you consider the convenience of bypassing London. Have used this company before and will in future due to their high standards

From Australia, and never having been overseas before. Booked online a long time before leaving Australia and arrived in Cologne feeling somewhat anxious with jsut a piece of paper (printed receipt). Flew from Cologne to Helsinki early January 2005. Awesome trip. Check-in at both ends very easy. Cologne very well serviced by connections to airport. - as was Helsinki. Germanwings uses the main airport, so no long distance out of the city. Going back to Europe this December/January and am planning on using Germanwings for at least 4 inter-European city trips. Great service, plenty of room, smooth flight, no pushing and shoving.. This was winter, fewer people, mostly Finns returning to Helsinki I think. Tip: when using the train from Frankfurt main train station, or its airport station, do not use ICE or IC fast trains - they cost at least twice as much (about 60 euro one way) as the regional trains, S-Bahns, etc (30 euro one way).

I just completed another roundtrip CGN-Bologna-CGN with Germanwings. As I've experienced in the past everything was fine. The price of EUR43,-- is very hard to beat. I took advantage of their "Happy Snack" for EUR5,-- and was satisfied with the quality. Beats all offerings in any airport. The only criticism is their boarding policy or rather lack of a boarding policy. I simply can't believe its quicker and cheaper to have everyone scramble to get a "good" seat.

I used to fly regularly from Frankfurt Hahn to Stansted with Ryanair (18 times a year) - but Germanwings now offers a service that is superior in every way. First of all, there is no ridiculous 15kg luggage limit, a major competitive disadvantage for Ryanair. Secondly, CGN is much better served by public transport, it only takes 5 minutes to get to the train station from which you can get to Cologne and Bonn within minutes. Thirdly, the onboard prices for food and beverages are much better value than those of other low cost airlines.

Flew STN-CGN-STN in March 2005. Flights were fine, and 320 outbound and 319 inbound were clean and comfortable. Onboard service friendly, and prices reasonable. The downside is the boarding procedure at both Stansted and Cologne. Stansted was a free for all with much pushing and shoving. There was no evidence of the sequential boarding process as described on the company website. Cologne was the same. I happened to get to the airport early and had boarding pass number 2. Passengers were bused to the aircraft, and I ended up on the second bus, and near the back of the plane. I've yet to see the boarding process work properly on these carriers and I wish they would allocate seats at check- in to avoid this.

Flew a few times CGN-ZAG-CGN during 2004. Everything just like a good flag carrier, (many of them ask also fees for snacks nowadays!). Main advantage (in addition to the good service/fair price ratio) is the ticketless booking: you print your reservation, pay with your Card, and don't need to go somewhere to pick-up a piece of paper called ticket.

I too have just experienced Germanwings Gatwick-Cologne route, using AeBel's Boeing 717's. Checkin-in at both ends was fast and although the open seating arrangements did result in the occasional small "scrum", it certainly seemed no worse than on other airlines where pre-assigned seating is provided. I noted especially that the Spanish crew members were more friendly and smiled more than their German counterparts. Seats had adequate, just, pitch but their style and colour are old fashioned, some also looked frayed. That is something Germanwings will need to change of they decide to purchase some of these aircraft. The 5 Euro Happy snack is excellent value, especially when you considering some airlines charge £4 for just a sandwich. Arrival outbound was 15 minutes late due to a tardy departure from Gatwick, but the return was 25 minutes early. At £43 return, this is a very good value service.

21 February 2005

I recently travelled with German Wings from London Gatwick to Cologne and back on a day trip. Check in was quick and friendly and when I arrived at the Gate, boarding had already commenced. I was welcomed on-board a clean Boeing 717 by the crew; it was "free" or "open" seating and I picked a comfortable aisle seat. Seat pitch was good. The aircraft had been leased from Ae Bal, a Spanish operator and the captain said that they were using the aircraft on trial and route proving. The flight seemed much quieter than most short hall flights and may have been because the engines were at the back of the aircraft. Service from the cabin crew was very good, they offered food and drink for purchase, 5 euros for a large filled roll (choice of Ham or cheese & salad), drink and chocolate bar being good value, I thought. The flight arrived ten minutes early, and the bags arrived quickly. The return journey was very similar, except that I was able to witness the airline priority board families with small children and others that needed more time. Arrival back at Gatwick was again early. Based on these flights recommended.

A very dissatisfying experience with Germanwings this morning. A knock-on technical fault from the previous evening's flight meant that Germanwings allocated my scheduled aircraft to transport the previously delayed passengers. The result - this morning's flight between Stansted and Stuttgart was left with the faulty aircraft and the flight was delayed by over 4 1/2 hours. Consequently, my day-trip to Stuttgart was a waste of time and I informed ground staff that there was no point travelling. Germanwings attitude? Tough! They will not refund the flight and they will not even allow me to transfer onto another flight without charge. It's depressing when low-cost, low-service airlines live down to their expectations. We will not be using this cheap airline again!

Just taken a weekend to Cologne with GermanWings. Flights on time, clean, excellent on board service - nothing to complain about at all! The price was very competitive & Cologne-Bonn airport is a great hub for an airline. The flight over (Stansted - Cologne) was on a soon to be retired 717, the flight back a brand new A319. The Airbus was fantastic, great leg room, quite and leather seats. You have to purchase on board, but you don't mind if it comes quickly with a smile and a reasonable price. Having flown nearly all the discount airlines out of Stansted this one ranks as a clear winner. Watch out easyjet and Ryanair - people know value and good service when they see it.

Last winter I flew back from Germany (Köln-Bonn airport) to Istanbul with Germanwings. I have only paid 56 €, which is quite a bargain. If you use the early booking advantage correctly, you can save lots of money. You don't need to carry any tickets with yourself, too. The seats were ok, not the best legroom, but I haven't noticed any difference in seat comfort with Turkish Airlines, which costs twice as much. Surprisingly the FA's were really friendly and not snobbish and I was delighted with the meal, which cost only 5€. Of course there are some problems or better said cost reduction related incidents: Germanwings uses the Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul (if you can say for the place, where it is built Istanbul!). Landing far away from the city (45 minutes by bus) is a negative issue, but nevertheless best service and flight quality for the cheapest price on this route.

I just returned from a roundtrip CGN-BUD-CGN on Germanwings. Both flights left and arrived on time service was fine. The prices for beverages and sandwiches are not more expensive than the airport restaurants. FAs did a good job. I've flown them in the past and will continue to fly them in the future.

1 August 2004

Very disappointing experience! Booked a flight today to go from Cologne to Budapest next week to only find that when I checked the same date by chance five hours later that the tickets were not only cheaper but available so at better dates and times also. This date does not fall under the Crazy Night special. When I called the call center at an expensive rate I was not helped at all and given a false fax number for customer relations also. Being a frequent Germanwings flyer and having recommended this service to many people I cannot express just how disappointed and annoyed I am. I feel that my trust as a customer has been abused and that I have been treated unfairly. Thus, watch out for poor service and also that times and prices change at all times and not just during the Crazy Nights - therefore you can never be in good faith that you are indeed getting the best offer or as they say the earlier you book the cheaper you fly.

Vienna to Cologne comfortable with good leg room and a spotless cabin. However the GW bus connection to Dusseldorf had been cancelled for some time with no advertising, even on their web site, leaving me to spend hours waiting for the Sunday bus that never arrived. Posters and timetables were still in place. I had to call head office to be told "Oh that bus service has been discontinued" Luckily I was not relying on it and caught the train which was quicker anyway !!

Ostensibly a low-cost, no-frills carrier, but by any criterion, Germanwings is top-notch. Flew STN- Koln/Bonn return and not only was the price a bargain, but check-in and cabin staff were very courteous on both legs. Seats are comfortable and legroom is generous. The Happy Snack offering is commendable: for EUR 5, one has a choice of sandwich/baguette, chocolate bar and drink (including alcohol). The chicken baguette was tasty, served in a brown seed roll, while the local Kolsch beer was also offered, served in a proper bottle, not a can. A vastly superior arrangement to BA's All- Day Deli, which in turn is better than what many flag carriers now provide.

Flew with Germanwings from Rome to Stuttgart last June 24 as part of my European holiday and coming from the Philippines. Aircraft very clean and with cheerful FA's. This is my 3rd flight with Germanwings in 3 years. Friendly staff from the check in counter to the flight crew. Flight left on time and in fact arrive 10 mins early. Good selections of food sold on board at cheaper price than most low cost airlines. FAs distributed a bottle of complimentary Nestea drinks when you disembark from the Airbus A319 aircraft, Overall always an excellent value for your money though I would prefer its old pricing scheme where immediately the price reflected is already net of taxes and charges. The old price structure makes canvassing of cheap flights easier and less tedious. I would recommend this airline for a very good service.

Flew Germanwings again this past week roundtrip to Paris. As expected the flights were fine, check- in a breeze in Cologne and Paris. I booked about a month in advance and still paid less than on the others flying that route. Just one small negative point. In Paris passengers are bussed to the plane and it seems Germanwings expects over 100 people to fit into the bus. What is the reason for this? Bad coordination in Paris or is Germanwings really too cheap to pay for a second bus? I will continue to fly with Germanwings, just hope I don't have to be squeezed into a bus like in Paris.

21 June 2004

We travelled with Germanwings on two occasions in June. We had made reservations with ample time and obtained tickets at very good prices when compared to the prices they were going for a week before the actual flights. Courteous airport check-in staff. Efficient in-flight staff. We were very satisfied with their service. After reading other comments about budget airlines, we were concerned that the flights might be cancelled at the last minute. However, by checking their rising prices on the website a week before the flights, we assumed that the flights were still being booked and would not be cancelled for lack of customers.

Edinburgh to Cologne. Staff courteous and genuinely friendly. Food reasonable, and having flown BA and Swiss recently found staff to of an equally high standard and plane to be no better or worse than competitors. Returned on 9/4/04 on full plane - only complaint was that some passengerrs decided to queue at the gate rather than wait to be called - caused a free for all on the bus to the plane leaving people with children and the elderly and infirm at the back. A boarding pass system similar to easy jet could be introduced and the staff enforce it  - other than that flight took off and landed on time.

8 April 2004

Germanwings for a leisure trip from Stuttgart to Barcelona and was impressed by their outstanding quality. The plane was a clean and modern Airbus A319 with the same legroom as major European carriers. In fact the interior looked almost identical to Lufthansa. Might be because Germanwings is a sub company of Lufthansa. On board, food and beverages are served at additional costs like on almost all low-cost airlines. The crew on both flights was very friendly and helpful. Check in is simple and very efficient. I would recommend Germanwings to anybody seeking alternatives to overpriced major airlines in Europe.

Another nice experience with Germanwings. This time CGN-BLQ and then MXP-CGN. Both flights were fine. In case anyone questions the existence of the EUR19,99 fare, well I got it twice! Looking forward to more great flights with Germanwings!

CGN-STD-CGN. Good flight. Good rates. Keep up the good work Germanwings! Just two minor "complaints": In CGN we took a bus to the aircraft in Cologne. We were cramped into the bus (the bus was full, so the plane was full) The ride to the plane last perhaps 30 seconds for the 50 meters. It this really necessary? Also, boarding in Stansted very chaotic. Perhaps a lot of former Ryanair passengers, not able to wait until their row was called. More or less "everyone for themselves attitude."

I was very surprised to travel with Germanwings and was not first time or a first impress only. Four of us were travelling between BUD-CGN-CDG and back - that was 76 Euro/person only so I was expecting some kind of 'Ryanair-feeling'. Instead of that we've got good seat pitch, really acceptable on-board- prices, professional crew, very clean plane in- and outside and their punctuality is unbeatable. They're using Airbus 319 & 320.

26 August 2003

I have flown several times with Germanwings on the route CGN/CDG. As a part of the Lufthansa Group you can expect German standards unwrapped in a low cost airline. Some Aibuses are new but some are old Lufthansa's with worn-out and tired seats. Cabin crew is young and friendly but ground staff in Paris don't speak German.  Booking in advance makes tickets very cheap but can be tricky if the airline decides to suspend a flight and change your booking for a flight at the next day. Booking your flight a few days in advance may cost you as much as the flight with Air France or Lufthansa. In a word, flying Germanwings is a good bargain if you are flexible and want to save money for your stay in Paris.

18 July 2003

I am extremely annoyed by the problems caused me by German wings. In April I had booked a Bologna to Cologne flight to connect with a Cologne- Berlin flight for August 11th. On 7 th July I received an email from Germanwings to say they had suspended the first flight and so change my booking to a later flight.  Problem - They were unaware of my second booking and the new flight arrives in Cologne too late to make the connecting flight to Berlin. I phoned both the Rome and Cologne Call Centres to ask for a change also to my second flight but I was told I had to pay for the change. I complained that the change was forced on me by their schedule change and got a repeated refrain of " It says clearly on our site that flight schedules may change and are not guaranteed" In other words, an attitude of " It's not our problem" At this point I requested by e-mail, advised by the Rome Call Centre, a full reimbursement. None of the e-mails I sent on 7/8/10 July have been answered by today. I called the Cologne call centre. I was told two things. (1) They do not give any re-imbursement and if I did not show for the flight that was my own business. (2) E-mails were answered in turn and according to date of flights, mine was not until August , so I just had to wait for a reply. I publish this to warn you that when Germanwings say they do not guarantee schedules, it also means that when they do and upset your plans they are neither helpful nor sympathetic.

Germanwings Koeln - Madrid and return. I was impressed with both flights. The aircraft was new and very comfortable. The staff were helpful and nice - very good service. I had delays on both flights which was annoying, but I also experienced this on Ryanair! Much easier to get to than Ryanair's airports and it arrived at the Madrid airport (not some little airport in some remote village) so it was easy to get to and from the airports and doesn't involve too much travel time. Germanwings is worth considering if your wanting too save $$ on your ticket - but still fly with a good airline.

25 May 2003

Flew Germanwings Rome to Cologne and Cologne to Madrid. Both flights very pleasant from check in to the flight itself. Aside from clean leather seats and cabins on the new A319s, and friendly flight attendants, Germanwings boasts most generous baggage allowances of 25kg and 7kgs for hand luggage - a distinct advantage over other low cost carriers. A valuable consideration on our part for our 10 European country trip with varied airlines.

Have flown with Germanwings a few times already. I recommend this airline - always found staff to be friendly, cabin always clean, a sandwich, half litre-drink and chocolate bar cost 5 Euros -  the flights were always on time. Not bad for a low-cost!

24 April 2003

Attention to anyone visiting or living within reasonable distance to Cologne/Bonn airport. There is finally a low fare airline offering great bargains to major European cities, e.g. Vienna, Berlin, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid and more. Unlike Ryanair, you don't have to go to some out of the way airport. When you book a flight to one of Germanwings cities you won't arrive hundreds of kms away from your destination. They operate on the same principle as JetBlue and Southwest. So, if your plans take you to the Cologne/Bonn area and you want to get somewhere without paying through the nose, try Germanwings.
