"They took everyone's passport"

(Turkey)

Not Verified | They took everyone's passport and boarding passes in the transit desk without an explanation. They showed us to an elevator and up to the second floor. The guy at the desk said he will bring the passports up later. We kept waiting. When no one came after 20 something passengers and more than half an hour i went back down to ask when to get our passports back and they said they will be delivered at the boarding, which for me is 5 hours later at 8a.m! Instead of trying to get some rest i am waiting to get my passport and boarding pass back in the middle of the night, which is kept in a stack of other passports and boarding passes!

"a very bad experience"

(Germany)

Not Verified | I had to use the transit hall twice, once on my way to Seoul, and once the way back. It was to be honest a very bad experience, as the availability of food counters was very limited in terms of opening hours and the types of food, the staff did not speak almost any English, and many of them were very unfriendly and even rude, and this is not just towards me, but towards all other passengers as well. When I or some other transit passengers that I met there asked simple questions to the so-called information desk, the employees just walked away without saying anything, and I have never seen something like this before. The seating is available, but is very limited, as they consist mostly, of plastic "benches" that are really uncomfortable. The toilets were also very dirty, and sometimes so dirty that it was impossible to use. I would definitely avoid this airport in the future. There is only one departure "gate" and all passengers have to go through there, while the shouting staff direct people into the accurate aircraft from there.

"plenty of seating available"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Arrivals experience was very easy - only a short queue at passport control, and bags arrived quickly. Watch out for the unlicensed taxi drivers touting for business, and head straight for the green taxis on the rank to the left of the terminal door. On departure, check in opened early and had no queue, again no queue for security or passport control. Only a small airport, but plenty of seating available, and a couple of cafés and bars. There's a small smoking room. Lots of duty free shops - unlike main western airports, these are several independent stores all selling similar items but different prices, so shop around for the best deals. On the downside, despite having 4 air bridges they are all accessed by a single gate which can get confusing if more than one flight is boarding at once.

"outdated with minimum amenities"

(United States)

Not Verified | A small airport, but still outdated with minimum amenities, manned by communist era employees. I would still consider all these tolerable, if the whole departure/boarding process was not a tragicomic procedure. Although the airport boasts 4 jetties, they all share one entry from the departure hall, and if there are more than one flight taking off at the same/similar time, the chaos ensues, as both planes passengers storm the single gate to get to their jetty, there is no order or info given as to which particular plane is loading, and at the gate throngs are sorted out by the personnel! It was hysterical, shoving, pushing, being pushed back by the airline personnel who scream for the other plane's passengers, etc etc.. Beautiful country with very nice people, so a bit of an adventure does not mar the travel experience. The airport is very soon to be replaced by a newer, hopefully much modern version.

"very pleasant experience"

(Norway)

Very pleasant experience. The airport was very clean and up to a great standard. It looked like a new development. The airport staff are very polite. Passport control a breeze, especially for families with small children. The baggage arrived in good time. I could not find an ATM or a currency exchange counter though. Had to go downtown to get local currency.

Ulaanbaatar Airport customer review

(Hungary)

Time travel back to circa 1960: the building the service the ambience is completely mid-20th century. Check-in is completely disorganized - there was no line for business class you simply had to shove aside others on the line while shouting "business class". Business class lounge looks exactly like a not-too-classy bar from Eastern Europe in the 1950s. Shops are like souvenir shops at a cheap tourist site. But it is not a very busy airport so you pass through everything fairly fast. Fun in strange sort of way. They are building a modern airport for UB so you better go now if you want to experience it before the airport is retired.

Ulaanbaatar Airport customer review

(Australia)

Departure: MIAT Airline check in requires credit card verification from traveller. This can be a problem if you book your flight through a travel agent as the credit card details wont match. Very limited number of shops and lounge availability (I suggest eating before you get to the airport). Arrival: Slow customs officers for a small airport. Allow 1 hour from landing to clear customs and collect bags (there is only 1 baggage carousel and travellers to UB often have a lot of luggage). Wifi in arrivals area is unreliable and Taxis will most likely not use the meter unless prompted.

Ulaanbaatar Airport customer review

(United States)

Very small airport. One baggage carousel. Very quick customs and immigration line. Old Russian-style concrete architecture. Departure area similarly small. There is a business class "lounge" but not much on offer. There are a few stores in the departure area where you can get snacks drinks and souvenirs. There is a small room for smokers. Very basic but functional. Customs and immigration again very quick on departure.

Ulaanbaatar Airport customer review

What an experience Genghis Khan (ULN) proved to be! I arrived with my small group at 06.00 for an 08.15 MIAT flight. Several full flights and 4 staffed check-in desks. No queuing system exists - pushing and shoving is standard. Check-in staff vanish leaving empty desks. No management and nobody can answer questions. We started queuing at 06.00 and we were finally checked in at 08.00. Other than the check-in hall and a blur of corridors as I ran to the aircraft I saw nothing of the airport. Recommendations? Time the patience of a saint and stand your ground! Oh and a small child seems to be a golden ticket the the front of the "queue".
