Delhi-Shanghai. Check-in okay and boarding on time. Service during the flight standard. Due to
weather conditions plane could not land at Pudong Airport but landed at Nanjing Airport CN. From
here all the trouble started. Waiting 6 hours in the cabin with only 1 glass off water offered.
Don't speak about food! Finally announcement that all passengers should leave the plane. Then 2
hours waiting for luggage and another 2 hours transfer to hotel. At 05.00am arrived in hotel.
Quickly after arrival at hotel with taxi to Wuxi trying to keep my scheduled meeting. Flight was
okay, but cabin crew and airline not capable to deal with such circumstances. Decide never to fly
with Air India again.

Return trip JFK-DEL. I chose it because I had heard Air India were operating the new 777 LR's on
this sector and price was very reasonable. Check-in uneventful. The ground crew are more casual than
business-like. Flight attendants were not overly attentive but overall service was OK. Food fair for
the Indian palate. Spacious seats for the economy section. IFE Movie selection was fair.

JFK-LHR coach class. The good: acceptable dinner, bulkhead seat with extra space to stretch out (ie,
flight not oversold), efficient check-in and flight staff, reasonable ticket price. The bad: poorly-
designed website and ticketing office (wouldn't sell me the ticket over the phone even though the
website was down), very old equipment with poor IFE, poor breakfast.

Air India overbook pretty much every flight. Flying back from India to Heathrow, we experienced
cancellations and overbookings resulting in a journey that should have lasted 9 hrs taking 2days
instead. The aircraft was dirty on the way from Birmingham to Amritsar and cabin crew did not meet
the standard I am used to on British Airways. They do not even smile. The in-flight entertainment is
good providing it works. When I queried the scart lead that was dangling from the seat in front
after getting my leg caught on it, the cabin crew apologised but offered no resolution. I had no
screen the entire flight. The first meal you are offered on the typical UK to India route and vice
versa is not too bad, but be prepared for the second. It consisted of a slice of bread that was
buttered with a slice of tomato and a slice of cucumber - thats it! The ground staff representing
the airline don't get any better either. The manager at Amritsar refused to speak to any passengers
regarding the overbooking and no order was introduced. The staff are not able to empathise as they
do not understand the commitments we have in the UK. Most just shrugged their shoulders and
exclaimed that we should welcome the extra day off. If I could offer a tip it would be not to fly
with Air India. They seriously need to consider the service they offer good paying customers. We
booked as they offered a direct flight from Birmingham to Amritsar. However, now having experienced
Air India service I don't mind making a stop or flying to an airport further away from home.

DEL-KUL in economy. Most of the faults with this particular trip stem from the fact the Delhi
airport is a god-awful example of an international airport. Flight scheduled for 0030. No sign of
inbound aircraft until 0100, boarding commenced at 0145 and flight finally departed DEL at 0230. Not
an overly significant delay in the grand scheme of things, but none the less irritating. Flight
itself uneventful. Aircraft appeared to be leased from LOT Polish, could not read any of the safety
info. Cabin crew polite and happy to indulge our request for multiple meals as both of us were
famished. Not bad for a relatively short sector, would not trust the airline with any flight longer
than this though, seemed woefully disorganised at time prior to boarding.

Unfortunately we are in agreement with most of which has been previously stated here. We flew
Business Class HKG to DEL, a 6 hour flight. Plane appeared old and fragile. Our seat had masking
tape on its arm and wouldn't stay in the upright position - but no problem, because they don't do
safety checks anyway! Entertainment was a central screen showing only bollywood and music was mostly
Indian selections. Dinner offered oriental or indian choices and was adequate. The flight had been
delayed for 4 hours, so a few drinks led to nap time and we survived. Awakened with PA system "Wake
up, we're landing" - and we were! Don't recommend this airline.

I have just returned from JFK using Air India - never again. Our flight out on 15 March was awful.
It took us 3 hours to check in - once on the plane, the seat my brother in law was given had a
disgusting brown stuff on the seat and up the back. We pointed it out to the air hostess who offered
to put a tissue on it! This we refused and he eventually got another seat away from the rest of us.
The inflight entertainment was so bad the pictures kept jumping and if you where not quick enough to
get head phones it was just bad luck. The toilets on board where dreadful. The food was ok if you
like curry - as I do not the options was take it or leave it. Our return yesterday was a little
better, the check in was quick. The plane was a more modern one with your own TV screen, but only a
few in the area we sat in worked - and again if you wanted head phones it was first come get them.
The air hostess we had on the way back was the worst I have ever had the misfortune to meet - rude
and aggressive and when she dropped water over me she found it quite amusing.

LHR-JFK-LHR. Both outbound and inbound planes were tired, scruffy, and very dirty. Bits of food were
on the floor. The seatback pockets were full of crumbs and bits of food. On each trip one of the
overhead reading lights didn't work. One of the seats would not recline. Another had a broken
armrest (which we got them to fix before we took off). The headphones were not sealed in a bag, and
many were broken. The backseat table tops were filthy. The toilets were dirty. The inflight
entertainment was ancient - a projector showing a movie (no choice) on a screen at the front of each
cabin section. The onscreen flight info (which was displayed when the film finished) gave the wrong
destination local time (one hour out on each trip). All small problems on their own, but put
together makes you wonder if the safety of these flights is of a similar poor standard. On the plus
side, the cabin crew were friendly and courteous, but you can be sure we won't fly Air India again.

LHR-JFK return - pleasantly surprised. Departure and arrival as scheduled. The aircraft was an old
747-200 but clean, good condition with plenty of leg room. The food and the service was very good
and staff very friendly and attentive. My criticism would be in-flight entertainment which was very
poor and could be improved upon. For the money I paid for this flight from London to New York
(£250.00) I got real value for money, you would have to pay a lot more if were to travel with most
other carriers.

Staff member not willing to help or not allowed to use other toilets in front! In flight service was
poor. Return flight canceled hence sent to Bombay - reached London 26 hours late! No responsible
person to answer, not a word of apology, no communication during whole saga. I don't say that such
incidences do not happen for other airlines, but the way the issues were handled by Air India were
atrocious. As an Indian I am ashamed and let down by Air India.

JFK - Heathrow - Delhi return Outbound on time and Business class Seats are large, but do not
fully recline - so you spend time tossing and turning and try not to slide off. Quick 1 hour turn in
Heathrow. Flight to Delhi re-routed (after akeoff ) to Mumbai, which has the worst Lounge I've ever
seen. Eventually transferred to Delhi, but not before they lost all our luggage. Baggage claim in
Delhi is a nightmare rum by clerks paid to deny everything, and by the number of times they can pass
people from one clerk to another. Return flight was delayed 8 hours before boarding and then another
6 hours after boarding. On arrival at JFK were given $ 500 coupons for future Air India flights -
never to be used!!

It is a national disgrace - old aircraft, tatty interiors, dreadful IFE (unless you like Bollywood),
earphones socket that don't work, and only the very newest of its fleet has screens in the back of
the seat. The cabin crew are indifferent, and I have never come across an airline which allows
passengers to blatantly break the rules regarding the position of seat trays/seats during take
off/landing, or the use of mobile phones inflight! I've never taken off on time and, like some of
the other commentators here, have been delayed over 24 hours in the past. The ground crew at Mumbai
airport are useless when delays occur and you are never given the correct information, if you get
any at all!

the wheel chair person never turned up. I had to request Immigration Counter to allow us to clear
from that counter, and she had to walk all the way.

LHR-BOM-LHR - Flew out on Christmas Day evening. Got upgraded to Business Class - what a
disappointment! The lounge was OK, though worn and out-dated, with a meagre selection of food and
drink. The plane was a leased 767 with an Air India logo - the seats were old style and worn, IFE on
a loop with a small 7" screen, same blankets and pillows (though cotton pillow case) as economy
class and the in-flight catering was the worse I've ever had. Dried, over cooked turkey, a cold
Christmas pudding, impenetrable to plastic spoon, fork and knife and no tea and coffee service.
Breakfast came as a bowl of fruit and one warm, but not fresh, croissant - but I did have tea this
time. Cabin crew OK, but made no real effort to detail. Coming back in economy, the meal was
actually good, but all else was of equal poor standard, IFE faltered and they eventually managed to
show two Hindi films on the overhead screen. I had seats in exit row and was pleased with the leg
room, everyone else looked squashed - the people in the row behind actually asked that we not keep
our seats reclined, as there was no room. The only good thing thing about both legs was that they
were on time and had no problems at check-in. How Air India think they can rival other airlines such
as BA, Virgin and Jet on the same route as baffling, there's even not even any real price difference
on economy class tickets.

8 January 2008 Customer Trip Rating :
I flew Air India last month Birmingham to Amritsar. The tickets were booked a few weeks in advance.
A week before the flight my agent sent me a mail to say that flight was delayed by 12 hours. Air
India did not give any explanation as to why the flight was delayed. Instead of flying out at 10:15
am the flight was rescheduled at 10:30PM. After checking in for the flight it was announced that
flight was further delayed by another 4 hours. On our return the flight was again delayed by 3
hours. The only explanation that I could get out with Air India official were that it was a
technical fault any time there was a delay. Having said that the food was good the service during
the flight was good. I thought to my self that it was just my flight that got delayed a quick search
revealed that many international AI flight do not seem to fly on time. It seems to be an inherent
problem with Air India. My mother was to fly the very next day from Amritsar- to JFK via Delhi and
I could not believe that when she reached Amritsar airport the flight was cancelled and no one
bothered to even inform the passengers before hand. A quick call to Delhi Airport duty manager said
that the flight from this sector had been cancelled. It was very clear that this part of flight from
Amritsar to Delhi was cancelled and passengers were not notified. Given the feeling that Air India
does not care for the difficulties it causes to its passengers. Keeping in mind it is still part of
the Indian Government run organisation and hence the similar attitude of the airline. I think it is
time that if Air India was to survive in this day and age and compete with the other good airlines
it should go private ownership. The only plus point was that made us buy this ticket was it flew
direct non stop to Amritsar hence close to place where I come from and the service during the flight
was acceptable. Fly Air India if you are desperate - avoid if you can.

Birmingham to Toronto return. I found no fault with the flights themselves. Each seat had a mini-
screen for personal entertainment, meals tasty and food plentiful. As these flights were in December
2007 they were overbooked and I did get upgraded to Business Class on the return flight. My reason
for not flying with Air India again is simple - reliability. Two days before my flight to Canada I
received a phone message to call the airline immediately. They pushed my departure time back 4 hours
and also cancelled my Dec 23 flight and booked me onto the 24th (Christmas Eve). There was no
availability for the 21st or the 22nd. The flight to Canada took off at about midnight, 8 hours
after the time on my original schedule - luckily I emailed an airport hotel in T.O. from Birmingham
Airport to reserve me a room (got in about 3AM local time). Flight back even worse experience. I
rang Air India to reconfirm my flight and asked that if the flight was overbooked I would fly out at
a later date to avoid spending Christmas in transit. No problem, she said, I had a confirmed seat
and there was no over-booking. I was told we were flying out 9am Christmas Eve however arrived at
Pearson at 630am to scenes of total chaos. Flight delayed to 1230 and horrendously overbooked.
Managed to check luggage in by 9ish, endure two finger tip searches of my carry-on bag, and then
sent to a further security-screened holding pen for hours with screaming children and not enough
seats. The ground crew were talking to each other animatedly and called out my name and a few
others. A staff member took my boarding pass and told me it was cancelled and I did not know if I
was flying or not. By this time I had had enough and told her if I wasn't flying then fly me out on
the 27th so I could have at least spend the holidays with my Canadian friends rather than sat in an
airport or some dingy airport hotel room. She said she would try and that would be a great help to
them and she would confirm that with her supervisor. Another hour went by and I thought well at
least if they don't board me they are going to have to do something with me. Just before boarding I
was upgraded. Arrived in England in the early hours of Christmas Day which effectively left me so
tired after driving two hours to my family I could barely enjoy it. I cannot help think another
airline would have not messed me around in such a manner.

EWR-CDG-BOM round-trip, in economy class. Seated in the exit row outbound there was plenty of leg
room, but it was next to the galley and consequently busy and noisy. The food was OK, and the
service was decent. IFE was pathetic. The monitor near my seat was almost above my head, and it was
a choice between the movie, or a pain in the neck. On the return leg, the check-in at Bombay was a
disaster. Reminds one of getting into one of the local trains at peak time. Know not why people mob
the security personnel, thrusting tickets into their faces. Though the aircraft was newer, with
individual screens, to my disappointment mine didn't work leaving me to fend for myself for nine
long hours. Had the same experience, for the whole stretch, when I traveled a few months ago. AI
may not stand by the best, but it's doing its bit. Hope there is improvement, and fast. Does anyone
from AI read any of these things at all? Looks like they are not.

Ahmedabad to Newark. This time I had an additional baggage piece, so I went to AI counter to pay
$123 for the same. I gave them my VISA card, but they asked me for a cash - they said nobody in
Ahmedabad Airport knew how to make a charge on card ? The flight was 22 hours late in total. One
thing is for sure, this will be my last trip by Air India. I don't say that such incidences do not
happen for other airlines, but the way the issues were handled post-incident by Air India were
atrocious. I purchased Air India ticket since I got it for a $1000, $300 less than other airlines.
But the $300 additional expense is worth for other airlines. Even the food was pathetic this time
round. Extremely oily food. You can travel by Air India if you do not have value for time and like
being late in your commitments, like disobeying the flight safety orders - thats what AI passengers
do - if the captain says fasten up your seat belt for landing, passengers will be moving around for
water, tea and free wafers. its not that the announcement was only in English - Hindi announcements
were made too. I will pay any amount for other airlines, and wont travel by Air India again, even if
they offer me a free ticket.

JFK-BOM-JFK Economy on nonstop 200LR flight. The flight was clean, seats/legroom seemed larger than
747-400, FA pleasant through the 15 hour flight. They provided freebies like a keychain and a small

BKK to PVG. Thought we'd give Air India a try because of a low Business Class fare on this route.
The curry was excellent, and seats were adequate, but it was downhill from there. This was the only
international flight I've ever taken where they didn't have the immigration forms for the country of
arrival - and in China, with three long forms to fill out, that cost us fifteen minutes after
landing. Add to that the five minutes it took them to open the door.

LHR to JFK was a 777 aircraft, new and clean and very comfortable. Food nice, a choice between veg
or non-veg and Indian or western. A couple of cans of Tiger beer or wine or soft drinks were also
available. Crew friendly and willing to assist. Toilets clean and fully equipped. There was a 1.5
hour delay announced an hour before boarding so this was not too inconvenient and just allowed extra
time for relaxing. Return flight an older plane and some of the seats were reclined whether you
wanted them to or not. But the food was good, crew were fine, toilets were ok. Definitely worth
the saving.

PVG-BOM return in economy. Check-in at Shanghai very slow. Seat pitch not great. This flight is
advertised as direct but it only means that you stay in the plane until the end destination Bombay. It
makes long stops in Bangkok and Delhi so it all takes way too long. On those very full flights, every
leg a hot meal is served of mostly good quality. Do not expect friendly service but it is professional
enough with good regard to safety. Both outbound and inbound flights were delayed by more than 2
hours. Not terrific but value for money.

3 November 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
I've made about 8 trips from the US to Frankfurt 10-11 hour flight on Air India. The only good thing
about this company is the price, which is usually lower the other 1 stop airlines. Also the time,
being it offers non-stops to Frankfurt. Website is a joke - many flaws and often forgets your password
forcing you to re-register. In fairness they at least always send my paper ticket on time. This last
trip which I have yet to go on is the first that is E ticket, I hope it goes OK. Service is poor and
little control of the passengers. People are constantly getting out of seats when they should still be
buckled in. Aircraft is old and its common to have seat tables and foot rests falling during flight.
Seats are closer together then other airlines. IF the person in front of you reclines his seat you'll
have inches in front of you. During the flight the cabin is often too hot, I'm told Indian people like
it hot so they keep the heat high. The bath rooms get really dirty hours into the flight and never
again cleaned. I've only had a late flight once out of many flights, I put up with this hell only
since its about $600 total round trip and 11 hours one way rather then $100 more and 16 hours on a US
carrier. If you want service, nice clean plane then you might look somewhere else. Since Price and
non-stop are the only draw.

BKK-DEL return. My first time on Air India, which I approached with some trepidation. I was upgraded
to Business Class, so that instantly improved my opinion of AI! However, I'm one of those people who
feel most comfortable travelling upright, even on a 12 hour intercontinental flight, and the Business
Class seats on an Air India A310-300 have a permanent lean of at least 20 degrees, which meant that I
was quite sore by the end of the flight. The safety video was in Hindi, then repeated in English - I
prefer the Thai system, where you have one video with two sets of subtitles and two staff speaking
alternately in Thai and English. No personalised AVOD, just one screen at the front of the cabin.
Seat was noisy because of being level with the engine, and it was very difficult to understand the
Captain during his long announcement about flight details. Didn't bother with dinner due to having
eaten before takeoff. Pen marks on back of seat in front, and several cabin strip lights not working.
The return flight also on A310-300, but no upgrade - again, only a single screen. The seat backs in
Economy were much lower than I've seen on any other airline, and the top of the seat only came up to
my neck. Juice served before takeoff. Very nice European breakfast, but no in-flight announcements
at all. Excellent service from friendly and efficient cabin crew on both flights. Would I fly them
again? Quite probably.

30 September 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
We booked with Air India for our trip from Los Angeles to Frankfurt because they offered the lowest
prices by far. It was much lower than any other airline. How bad could it be? Very, very bad. Seats
far too cramped. Since we could not recline, we were stuck there. Wedged in. There was also a high-
pitched squeal that rang out intermittently throughout the night and kept us both up. It was coming
from a water spigot behind us. The entire plane was filthy and badly in need of cleaning. Carpets
stained, upholstery stained, plastic stained, etc. The restrooms were disgusting. Dirty and not
properly stocked. I visited three restrooms throughout the two flights and they were all equally
filthy. The panels in the restrooms (panels that hold things like towels, tissues, etc) were falling
open in all three of the restrooms I visited. About half of the seat pockets we saw were bent down and
remained permanently open by about 6" (reducing leg room even more). We saw several tray tables and
seat pockets that were held together with (and I am not exaggerating) plastic bags that had been tied
to them, and one tray table that was staying up only because someone had wedged it with part of a
People magazine and a rubber band. The TV monitors mounted to the ceilings here and there on the plane
were very old. Some worked, others had flipping, blurry or static screens and/or the color, contrast
or brightness was way off. But that didn't really matter because on neither flight were we able to
properly hear the audio. On the return flight our entire row (and several other complete rows in our
immediate area) did not work. On the first flight some of the audio in our row didn't work at all.
Even if we had gotten audio and a good picture, though, we probably wouldn't have watched the poor
selection of films and random side-show acts that were shown. While some of the staff was civil,
several of the crew rubbed us the wrong way or were downright rude. After a long period of not seeing
any crew members, my husband rang his call button. After about 10 minutes, the call button light (and
the lights of about two other passengers who also rang) were cleared - and no crew members entered the
cabin. My husband and other passengers rang again. Finally after about 10 more minutes a crew member
came out. About 20 minutes later my husband finally got his drink. One female crew member, when
passing out food in the morning, raised her voice repeatedly to try and wake a fellow passenger who
was sleeping. The passenger's arm was resting on her tray table. When shouting at the passenger didn't
wake her, the crew member shoved a tray of food across the tray and into the passenger's arm - then
walked off. This was the same crew member who, at the start of the flight, told my husband get up and
shut overhead bins for her because she said couldn't reach. Food was disgusting and inedible to me,
but I’m willing to concede this may just be my own personal taste. On the way there we were served
mutton (there was supposed to be a chicken dish, too – but they were out of it.) The mutton was very
dry and extremely spicy. Also served was plain, sour yogurt and some sort of stringy, chunk-tapioca
like desert that I didn’t recognize or care for. On the way back it was very similar with very spicy
food. In the morning they served us a sandwich on white bread (to my delight), but when I opened it,
inside was mayo, red peppers and something else – possibly eggplant? Yes, there were two high points.
One was a male crew member who honestly tried to help people out and looked into many of the problems
passengers brought to his attention. Prices are cheaper by far for many flights. But is it a value?
That’s up to you. I do not think of it as a value. While we are not wealthy and price is a huge factor
on our vacations, I would definitely not fly with Air India again unless there were no other options.
Hindsight is 20/20 - and I would definitely go back and spend more money for any other airline if I
could turn back time.

31 July 2007 Customer Trip Rating :
Air India flies from Newark to Paris for about $200 under the price of
competing airlines. The only plus about this airline is that the food
is interesting and good. On our recent trip, we experienced appalling
service, including flight attendants with zero charm, planes jammed with
screaming small children, and very loose observation of safety
regulations (passengers not required to stow trays and baggage from the
aisles during takeoff, plus passengers disregarding the flight
attendants and retrieving their bags while the plane was still taxiing.
To top it off, our return flight was delayed by 4 hours and most of us
missed our connections in Newark. The crew provided no explanation or
apology, though we did receive meal and lodging waivers if they were
requested.

HKG-BKK-HKG. A310 on lease from Czech Airlines was clean and cabin in
good condition. The crew was friendly and offered a good service. On
this 2 hour flight, a pre departure drink was offered, followed by full
meal and bar service. The quality and quantity of food were good. Air
India offers a good service and cannot be faulted on the service.
