KLIA Kuala Lumpur Airport customer review

(New Zealand)

Passed through KLIA four times in May 2011. Overall impression is of a clean functional airport that appears to be built for more passengers. In saying that though it is a great relief that there are not more as the queues are horrendous enough with the passengers they have. For both arrivals and departures the immigration desks are woefully understaffed and it is incredibly slow to get processed. Security was much more efficient and the security guards appeared pleasant and efficient. If airport shopping is your thing there is a good selection though very expensive. Plenty of places to eat too though not very cheap and they seem to be scattered all over the terminal as opposed to being in one central location. Getting to and from KL to the airport is a breeze on the KLIA express. Much more relaxing than the highway.

The positive impression of the nice architecture of the airport was countered by endless unnecessary queues at immigration. Using very few counters for incoming foreign passport holders it took 90 minutes!

I arrived too early for check-in I waited two hours before the counter opening. Limited seats facilities. Bar and food outlets only with service at counter no table service. Having three large suitcases and two laptop I could not leave them unattended. So non drinks and foods for two hours and even non possibility to go to toilette. Transportation from mail terminal to satellite by bus full to the gill limited seats air conditioning off.

Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok. Always have flown stress free through KLIA. Ample transportation options to the city large Check in terminal. I love the efficiency of the passport control (was kind to as well let me through the Malaysian passport only lane when my flight was about to board) and have to mention that they have always been courteous. Certainly something of a big plus for me when my current home airport is Bangkok and I always feel I am flying back to chaos long lines and surly immigration officers. The terminals are "separated" so have to travel by train but this time seems the "bus" was doing the chore. More seating can be added for rush hours for passengers. Very clean and efficient. A lot of shopping but am one of those who fails to see the point of stores and shops when you're flying.

This airport has no seating arrangements for transit passengers. All gates have a few seats but gates are not announced until one hour before departure. Woe betide if the flight is late! Restaurants are few with limited choice perfunctory service and placed illogically. This airport management has no idea about what it means to be a transit passenger. To add to this lack of seats or anything else to rest the feet/legs the announcement boards are too few and the staff at the transit desk unprofessional.

Very clean efficient rather pricey as all airports are especially once you hit the satellite terminal that's why the line is so long for hungry jacks! We went from plane to Hotel at kl sentral via KLIA express in 1hr 10mins a distance of 70klms and we had to wait only 10 minutes for our bag. Very impressed. Only thing hard to find a seat at main terminal if to early for check-in.

Very clean and well organised facility. Although upgrading taking place transfers between main building and satellite are well signed and well staffed. If you are unable to get access to any of the airline lounges the main facilities are of a high standard and plentiful. The tropical garden in the atrium is delightful. Be aware that bringing duty free alcohol into KUL is difficult and any duty free purchased is sealed in special bags and not permitted to be opened until you have departed. The Airside Hotel although hand is in need of complete refurbishment and pretty grim.

Very clean with a decent amount of shops and places to eat. Good signage around the terminals. The aerotrain that links the satellite terminal with the main terminal building is currently suspended (for a few months) for upgrading so buses are used for transfers between the terminals currently. There was excellent signage for this which made the terminal transfers easy and seemless.

Low cost terminal at KUL - stopped here many times now and always found temperature much too cold. Always warm humid outside and have to come and sit and freeze inside as no one brings coat with them. Had to sit with blanket round shoulders whilst waiting for flights. Please lower inside air conditioning also more comfortable seats needed outside. Long delays on Air Asia flight connections and no comfortable lounges.

Staff are generally friendly and everything seems to be efficient and clean. A very good feature is the KLIA Ekspress where you can check-in at KL Sentral. Security is quite efficient and immigration officers are not bad. If you fly MAS on a domestic flight there are not many eating and shopping options though. Also if you fly to a SE Asian destination you usually use the gates which are above the domestic ones - and there you also have limited duty free. The satellite terminal has a good choice of shops and restaurants although of course the food is airport food. One annoying thing about KLIA are the frequent announcements in Bahasa Malaysia English and Chinese for everything. Also I do not understand why they are constantly changing gates for flights. Usually it's never the same gate as stated on your boarding pass so you better check the monitors. Especially for domestic flights it is very common.
