Shanghai Pudong - Shenyang. Was able to check in at the self service counter, and was even able to input my LH M&M card number. Checked bags in at the desk, and changed seats to the emergency exit. Security empty and fast. The new T3 is very nice (still slightly lacking in shops you'd like to see), with bright and clean waiting areas. Delay announced, but we ended up leaving on time. Drinks and snacks served onboard. Nothing amazing, but adequate for the duration of the flight. Landed early. Shenyang airport a mess with about 8 flights using just 2 conveyer belts.

SHA-KMG-LJG. SHA to KMG was operated by a Boeing 737-800. Economy class seats extremely cramped with not much legroom. Later, I switched to an emergency exit row since the flight was not full. Food was rather simple compared to CA and MU. It was a box full of snacks. KMG-LJG on a Boeing 737-700. A hamburger, which was inedible, was served. Overall, not a very pleasant experience.

SHA - PEK, Economy on B767-300. Booked online, passport was sufficient, checking in a matter of seconds. The plane was clean, comfy seats and most generous legroom I have ever experienced in an Economy seat. 2x3x2 configuration was nice. Relatively friendly, but not overwhelming staff, probably speaking not too much English, got along with Chinese well. Food was OK, Chinese, certainly not for everyone though. 3 drinks in roughly 90 minutes are far above domestic European standards. Only annoying thing: The standard "please remain seated, turbulence ahead" messages every Chinese carrier plays all the time, even if there won't be any.

Yichang to Shanghai in April. I had to fly first class as economy was full but for an extra £50 it wasn't too much extra. The flight was on time and although first class wasn't what you would expect from other airlines, the seats were comfortable with good pitch.

PEK - Shanghai. Check in Beijing was very quick. The crew were very friendly and spoke good English. The safety announcement was only given in Chinese on a drop down screen which you could not really see. Both domestic flights were on a fairly old 767 and full. Complimentary drinks and food served on both flights.

Shanghai - Guangzhou. After a horrible journey on China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines proves to be a breath of fresh air. Check in was a breeze with less than 5 minutes wait by a very cheerful agent. The gate was changed last minute and the gate agent very apologetic. Once onboard, very well groomed cabin crew welcoming passengers and carried out safety checks seriously. Food was normal chinese domestic airlines fare, so nothing to rave about but additional requests for tea were attended to promptly, a rarity with chinese airlines. Both departure and arrival were on time. All in all, a much better option than MU on this route. One thing though, it seems that they do not give small baby an extension belt, a bit weird!

B737-800 from Hong Kong to Shanghai Pudong, and B767 from Shenzhen to Shanghai. The 737-800's are new, but for a flight from HK to Shanghai, this is the smallest plane compared to their competitors (ie Dragonair, Cathay, China Eastern) where planes are more spacious. The crew's english is still horrible (but improving). I'm glad they're part of Star Alliance, but obviously the member that needs the most catching up to do - Air China is much better.

SHA-CAN by Boeing 767, economy class. CAN-SHA by 767, economy. Both flights were pretty much on time. Check-in staff was, as expected, excellent at Honggiao, but not as good in Baiyun. They honoured our Star Alliance Gold Cards and invited us to the first class Departure Lounges at both airports. The 767 planes are quite new and well-maintained; cabin crews appeared to be well- trained.

Shanghai Hongquiao to Fuzhou, fare very convenient. Flight delayed two times (before and after boarding). Airplane quite old and not spotless, seat pitch less than standard, meal and drinks minimal. Staff polite but their announcements in English were almost unintelligible. Value for money but a bit under average Chinese airlines.

TAO-PVG. I was on a new 737-800. My flight was first delayed by 20 mins and moved gates. Economy class seats were a bit hard but legroom was okay. The recline was not impressive. This was a morning flight - breakfast was quite disappointing. It was a cheap but quite tasty chocolate bread, served with mineral water. Around 20 min to PVG they served some chinese tea - there were no other drinks but the two I mentioned. The lavatory were clean.

In flight service was good and friendly. Food was good for such a short flight from Dalian to Shanghai. Pre flight was a bit strange - the airline several times said that the flight had been delayed 1 hour so I went of to get some dinner when I returned the plane had the last passengers boarding even though I had only been away 20 mins. The plane actually left on time even though the announcements said it was going to be late

Flew on 767 from Shenzhen to Shanghai. Found the seat pitch on Economy was a lot better than others. Food was a little better than the Chinese domestic standard. But funny that the onward flight, crew finished all food service then do the drinks. But didn't find the same problem on the way back. One very good thing was that, we brought a discounted ticket, but we were allowed to pay the difference for changing to an earlier (more expensive flt), which wasn't allowed for my previous flt with China Eastern.

Guilin to Shanghai. I was charged excess baggage for being one kilo overweight and checked in with companion who was four kilos underweight. Handed the wrong boarding cards and when we reached passport control had to return to check in and no apology offered. Flight was an hour late and had a screaming baby in front of me for the duration of the flight. Food was an experience best forgotten. I would think quite a lot before I took another flight with Shanghai Airways.

PVG-HKG return economy class. Boeing 737-800. First time on this airline. I found Shanghai Airlines to have higher standards than China Eastern and Southern. Check-in speedy and efficient. Ample leg- room in the cabin. Both flights left and arrived on time. Food was the obligatory (on Chinese airlines) choice of rice or noodles going out and chicken sandwiches on return. All perfectly edible. We were also given ice-cream after dinner. One thing that really impressed me on these flights was the work ethic of the staff. Throughout the flights they quite literally didn't stop working. The only minor problem was that the English announcements on the plane were barely audible.

Shanghai Hongiqao to Xiamen. Economy Class. I arrived early at the airport (busy as usual but slightly better than before) and found out that there was only one counter for the frequent flyers, and two counters for economy class. So there was a longer line at the frequent flyer counter. But check in was quick anyway. Boeing 737 totally full, and FAs quite professional. Snacks were offered. IFE was poor, no personal screen, only small screens above. I have travelled with this airline before, and since they joined Star Alliance, I can see the quality of service are improving, but there's a long way to go.

SHA-LJG-return (stopover in KMG). First time on Shanghai Airlines and impressed by courteous flight attendants. For a relatively short flight (2 hours 20 minutes on the way back), I was surprised that they served a meal. Food average at best but included snack items. Planes clean, newer 737s. Only annoyance was having to deplane at KMG, wait 20 minutes, then get on again, apparently for FAs to clean up the cabin or something. Overall I would definitely recommend this over China Eastern or Southern.

Shenzhen to Shanghai Hongqiao return. Holding ANA Plantium card cannot check-in at First class counter. However, priority tags were still attached in my baggage. No priority boarding for priority passengers. Onboard quite smooth - an old Boeing 757, seat pitch is OK. Departure on time and a breakfast was served. FA not friendly and look tired. English not easy to understand.

Shanghai Hong Qiao to Guangzhou, extremely nice service at the airport, never ever experienced. Unfortunately 2 hour delay due to transport restrictions (no one understands what it means). Overall a nice airline, not easy for Chinese carrier.

Chendu to Shanghai PVG in economy. Check in in smooth, though no English, therefore seat request was not understood. Was able to check in through the "No Check-In Baggage"- counter, very convenient. If you only have small luggage, even more than one piece (had a quite big bagpack and 2 small bags), try it. New looking B737-800, great seat pitch in economy. Plane left with minor delay. Prior to take off, after doors were closed, a seat in the front row of economy with even more legroom was still free. FA asked whether I wanted to sit there. Service excellent, food good but nothing special. After landing in PVG, plane was positioned far out on the tarmac so we had to take a 10min bus ride to the terminal. Overall, a pleasant experience, can recommend them and will surely fly them again. Great value for money!

Booked Air China, got Shanghai Airlines. Beijing-Shanghai 737 First class. Old style big (not the most comfortable) style seats. 8 in the cabin. Service was quite good, food ok. Flew back in Business on Air China 777. Would opt for Air China even in the lower class. Shanghai Airlines was by no means bad, but its more of an unknown in my opinion. Nothing to rave about, and nothing to really hate.

Chengdu to Shanghai. We were delayed over 1.5 hours due to their airline making an error on the seating by issuing two tickets for one seat. It was the last flight of the night and no one wanted to be left behind. The airline decided to place the children in my row across on the laps of the parents (there was 3 children ages 11, 9, and 6). There was much argument and I decided I had enough - I told them that the 6 year old could sit on my lap. So there we were 3 adults and 3 children in the same seats. This treatment was not fair to both myself and the parents who paid full price for their children. The airline was very uncooperative listening to my complaint after arrival to Shanghai at 12 AM stating air traffic control problems instead of admitting to overbooking.

HK to Shanghai. B737-800 is quite new and clean, was about 70% ull. Dinner (tuna fish sandwich, cake and fruits) was served 40 minutes after the plane was in the air. Arrive Shanghai more or less on time. hanghai to HK. Plane is reasonably new and clean. Lunch was either rice or noodle. Service rather efficient considering the plane is almost full.

Shanghai - Lijiang in First Class; A nice flight, 4 out of 8 seats were occupied. I was the only Western guy and so they loaded one western breakfast especially for me, nice touch, breakfast also nice and quite a lot! Got an individual transport from the Gate to the plane! We made a stop in Kunming, no lounge access. Would take this airline again.

An aged, tired and dirty 757. Clearly the amount of baggage being carried on needs addressing. Food not even risked, drinks well. The highlight of the journey was seeing a FA take a bottle of the trolley, take a swig and replace the bottle. Needless to say, unless a sealed can or bottle can be obtained, drinks are best avoided. This would make anything over a 2 hour trip a non starter with this airline.

Guilin-Shanghai economy. Very clean B-767 after another "free for all" boarding, which seems to be common within China. Young all-female FAs which responded with efficiency. No inflight entertainment on an over 2 hours flight. Seat width okay, but pitch rather tight. It seems that internationally the airline offers a good product.

Shanghai to Guilin in a 737. Quick check-in, good seat pitch and another competent flight. English announcements were garbled. Decent inflight magazine for China and fast luggage return. Wonderful views of the karst scenery around Guilin as we approached the airport made for an excellent flight.

PVG-HKG-PVG. After a nightmarish flight on Dragonair on the same route a week earlier, I decided Shanghai Airlines was the way forward. I arrived in Shanghai about 90 minutes before departure, which should be pretty much peak check-in time, but I queued for only 2 minutes to check in. Check-in itself took another 2 minutes, and the check-in person was very helpful. The plane was old and the food - which I'd turned down - made me dry retch when my neighbour opened hers. So typical Mainland airline food, then. But the service was friendly. On the way back, check-in again took less than five minutes, including queuing. The plane was brand new, and they sensibly just gave us tuna sandwiches. We pushed back 10 minutes early, landed 20 minutes early, and were beaten to the carousel at PVG by our bags. I was home 40 minutes ahead of schedule, which was lovely.

Shanghai Hongqiao to Xiangfan over Chinese new year. Check in was very good and courteous. Waiting area adequate. Flight information was poor which is pretty endemic in China. The flight was delayed boarding and we had to sit on board for 30 minutes before takeoff because of Air Traffic Control problems. We were served an extra meal which was OK. The main inflight meal was excelent, and cabin staff were very good. The plane was a Canadair Regional Jet (Bombardier). The return flight food was an abomination though. This airline is a dice roll. But generally I was satisfied. Baggage reclaim was extremely fast.

Nanjing-Guangzhou. First Class on an ageing B757. First time of flying with this airline. Seating was old and showing it. FA tried but the lack of skills teaching was very evident. The food was passable at best. The toilet was smelly but looked clean. Unfortunately it ommited a terrible pungent smell when flushed. It gave you the impression it was recycled sewage - not a great experience! There was a Shanghai Airlines employee on the flight, he sat in the 1st section. I got the impression he was flight crew. He sat on both take off and landing without securing his seat belt and then tucked into a terrific 7 container banquet of food which made our offering of a meal somewhat wanting! I was truly thankful when we landed. I normally travel without much fear or trepidation but his time I had doubts!

5 July 2006

Confirmed my booking 10 days in advance on a flight Shanghai to Beijing. Tried to check in 3 hours in advance and was told flight was overbooked and that I had no seat on the plane. Was offered to go on standby on a flight 3 hours later. What a cheek! China Eastern helped me out with a flight the next day. Had to stay overnight in Shanghai at my cost and lost a lot of valuable time. My company has booked me on a Shanghai Airlines flight - without my knowledge - tomorrow Shanghai to Xi'an. Something which I will not allow to happen in future. When you go to their website in English and call up the timetable it comes up in Chinese without giving you a choice for English - very funny!

1 July 2006

The worst carrier I ever used. On the flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou the airline let more than 150 passengers sitting in the plane at the gate for more than 3.5 hours without airconditioning. The crew refused to let the people leave the aircraft and wait in the lobby. Two persons collapsed due to heat and stress. A doctor had to convince the FA's to open one of the back doors in order the patients get fresh air. Crazy! Additionally, there was no information from the cockpit. After about one hour the FA's started to serve the dinner - absolutely crazy! Later being on the taxi, the plane stopped again and people get up and ran towards the cockpit to talk to the captain. He did not open the door. This airline brought passenger in a dangerous situation, people got panic. Fortunately, there were no old people you might have lived a heart attack. The temperature was 37 degrees celsius in the back of the plane (Boeing 757).

WUS-XMN economy class B737-800. My first flight with Shanghai Airlines. Friendly FA. Only refreshment serves, cake and a drink. Flight takes about 40mins. Friendly FA compared to other domestic airlines such as Shenzhen Airlines and China Southern. Recommended for others.

30 March 2006

TXN-PVG economy Class Boeing 737-800. My first flight with FM. Excellent service and check in facilities at TXN-Airport. Flight on time, clean aircraft, FAs friendly with good English skills. Food and drink in Economy were okay for a short flight. Service didn“t stop even in bumpy conditions. I would recommend this airline for mainland domestic flights to all.

20 December 2005

PVG-TXN-PVG economy Class Excellent service and check in facilities on this short 40 minute flight. Delays both ways but not the airlines fault as Shanghai airport tends to be quite clogged up nowadays. I would recommend this airline to all.

6 December 2005

Shanghai Airlines are probably the best domestic carrier in China. Flight was a fairly old but well-kept 757-200 with excellent legroom. Food and drink in Economy was ok but no choice offered, which is unusual, although the attendants were bright and cheery. IFE was on screens above aisle and all in Chinese. The flight left one hour late but that is normal at CAN - usually the delays are longer with China Southern / China Eastern! Overall, this is the one that I try to use as much as possible, flying between CAN and SHA around twice a month.

6 May 2005

Shenzen-Shanghai in economy. My first flight with FM. In all not impressed but average for a Chinese domestic flight. Check in was smooth, FA's were busy (full load of pax) but friendly enough. Meal below par. I prefer a sandwich which tastes nice than a hot meal of questionable quality.

5 May 2005

Beijing to Shanghai on a B 757 service and although we had a delay and fully loaded plane service was very good. Personel spoke English and was in happy mode, we all know a smile goes a long way and they did it well. Food was good and that on a 1.5hrs flight with lots of competition inside the country.

21 June 2004

PEK-SHA on B767. Seat pitch very good (35"), extremely attentive FA's, on time, clean aircrafts, but the food was horrible and my beer warm. There was some IFE, but we were given no headsets (which did not bother me as I do not understand Chinese, but it might have bothered the majority of passengers that surely mastered it). For the 1:30h flight, it was ok, minus the catering.

4 March 2004

I joined Shanghai airline mileage club 6 month ago and I flew around the country A LOT with this airline. My temporary membership card works every time when I check in for putting those frequently miles into my account. But I have been told all my frequent miles was lost when I wanted to check why my formal membership card hasn't come after 6 month by talking to Shanghai airline service counter in Shanghai air port. What a shock! I don't have an account with them! I don't understand what is wrong with the system by adding miles to my account each every time when I flew with Shanghai airline - i this a joke?

6 February 2004

My journeys with Shanghai Airlines was from Shenzhen to Shanghai Hongqiao airport. Departed on time, well, that's what passenger expected. In flight services could just say "pass". Aircraft was B757, under my seat was some rubbish has not been cleaned. Air crews were friendly, but be sure not to speak Shanghai local language all the time, not every passenger can understand. Overall, is fair for a local airline.
