OSL-SVO-BKK round trip in business class. On this route, Aeroflot use only old, tired Soviet equipment. The seats in C-class on the OSL-SVO leg are very good, seats on the long haul route SVO-BKK is below standard one would expect, but OK. The service on board in all legs was very good, I will say better than most west European airlines! The crew was very friendly and efficient. Very good food. So far so good. On the ground Aeroflot is something of the worst I ever experienced. My flight back from SVO to OSL was late, and they had no information until just 30 minutes before the 3 hours late departure. I was told to prepare my self to sleep in the departure hall. Aeroflot people on ground couldn't care less. Without exceptions they were arrogant and unfriendly. Do they hate passengers? And their knowledge of English is terrible. I observed passengers of a cancelled flight from SVO to one German city, they were simply told to sleep on the floor till the next day. The airport SVO itself is a disaster. Aeroflot business lounge at SVO is small and dirty. Should I rate my trip from my experiences in the air, I would rate Aeroflot a 4 Star airline. But the standards on the ground make Aeroflot in my opinion a 2 Star airline.

SVO-GVA, ZRH-SVO. Overall great experience. Very nice and attentive crew. What surprised me is that there were no English language announcements on both flights! Russian-French on SVO-GVA and Russian- German on ZRH-MOW. The food was OK, but the same choice as on all Y class SU flights to Europe.

DXB-SVO-LHR last month in Y. The service was superb, cabin was clean and comfortable and food was more than edible on both flights. Both aircraft were nearly new, 320/321, and the crew were friendly and attentive. Transiting SVO isn't the most pleasant experience, but its adequate and this will improve when the new terminal opens next year!

Business class SVO to CDG, AF flight number but SU plane and crew. This was a fantastic flight! Very comfortable business class cabin - a real business cabin in 2x2 configuration with proper wide, leather seats. Very friendly, efficient cabin crew. Good food, with choice of a chicken, fish, or stroganoff as a main, served on dishes as opposed to tin containers. Individual CD players distributed with a decent choice of films. Take-off and landing on time. Compared to the AF equivalent on the same route, which is economy masquerading as business, there is absolutely no comparison!

PEK-SVO in Y. While Aeroflot European flights on A320/321/319 aircraft are tuly some of the best intra-europe available (especially in business), the long haul 767 service isnt of this standard. While the 767s have new and comfortable seats, the lack of entertainment options is a real let down (usually only one old movie shown on overhead screens, often in Russian language). In short, the long haul services lack the polish of the short/medium haul flights, although I suspect this will change as new long haul aircraft come. Cabin crew tend to be professional. The fact that alcohol has to be purchased is also quite strange for a european airline, but one can live with this.

LHR-SVO-LHR Business Class. Aeroflot is now a tale of two airlines - in the air superlative, on the ground easily the worst in Europe. Sheremetyevo airport and the whole experience from check-in to boarding is simply a nightmare, that makes you never want to fly again. Long queues, insufficient and uneducated personnel, bizarre time restrictions on check-in and lounge access, very poor quality lounges - pick something and its awful. Once on the Airbus A320, the experience changes - attentive staff, with a good command of English, great food, great entertainment (individual digeplayers) and a proper business class seat - not the usual European airline fare in biz class of an "economy" seat with the middle seat left empty.

LHR-SVO-HKG Economy. Generally not a bad airline. It has definitely improved and the in flight service is not bad compared to many other airlines. The seats are also ok, even if they don't have private IFE. Their prices are low, so that compensates. They do have a problem, though, with their ground staff. We were delayed 24 hours in London due to bad weather in Moscow and were met by really surly staff in addition to having to wait more than two hours at the airport before the coach to the hotel arrived. Sheremetyevo is not a pleasant experience, but fortunately they will soon relocate to a new terminal 3.

Moscow-Barcelona return economy class. Overall, they are not so bad. Airbus 321 seating leather and rather comfy, recline and seat pitch were good, better than many other airlines like United, JAL, Virgin Atlantic etc. Food was really delicious, hot and filling and free. I ordered a special Oriental meal on the way to Barcelona and it was like Indian curry. No dessert at all though. Drinks were standard, Pepsi, juice etc, but free alcohol is gone. No inflight entertainment at all except magazines and newspapers, but they were really nice to read. Plane was clean throughout the flight, as were bathrooms. Inflight service is the only thing that lets Aeroflot down. Their staff is totally different, from welcoming and warm to totally disinterested and rude. For example, if people pressed the attendant button to ask something to drink, one stewardess brought everything with a smile, but other one just asked you to help yourself in the galley. Some stewards offer you extra drinks without even asking. So, rather inconsistent. And all stewards look tired and sad throughout the flights, but that's just a Russian character. Aeroflot has very good baggage regulations, up to 10 kilo hand luggage for economy, but they are not strict with this, up to 32 kilo baggage.

FRA-SVO-FRU-SVO-FRA, C-class. Legs serviced by TU-154, A321 and A320. All planes fitted with new C-class leather seats in 2x2 configuration. TU cabin and fixtures somewhat worn. No IFE on three of the legs, individual digeplayers distributed on last leg. Catering was good with wide selection of drinks. Menus provided on two of the legs. Cabin crew friendly and helpful. Aeroflot has become a worthy Skyteam member.

Tashkent (UZB) to JFK(NY) via Moscow . Flight from TAS to SVO was good, crew friendly enough, food was good, entertainment onboard for economy class not as good as could be. Seats comfortable for economy class. During 4 hour flight we were drinks several times. Arrived on time. Plane was clean. SVO-JFK. Crew friendly, but economy class was mostly empty. Entertainment was fair. Good English speaking flight attendants. Reasonable price for Transatlantic flight.

Moscow-Hong Kong J-Class on 767-300. Load light, 8 pax in J, 22 in Y. A flight attendant handed out menu cards and asked how I would like to be addressed. Was offered a pre-flight drink. Meals served individually from galley, not on trolleys. I had already finished dessert while other passengers were still finishing their salad. Moist towels offered. Staff remembered my drink choice. Meals excellent, loved the soup served in a proper deep soup plate with fresh dill on top. Portable Dig-E players were handed out. Movie selection same as April. Only English reading material was the Moscow News. Seats exceptionally comfortable, though they only go nearly flat. In short, a big improvement over the horror stories one used to hear about. Attendants smiled, announcements in Russian, English and Mandarin, both from purser and pilot. Food was reasonable. Service excellent, arrival on time, ground handing in HK as usual very speedy.

Business class from IAD to Moscow, and onto DEL. Service excellent with good food, and a new business class seat with the portable digiplayer given out. No English reading material was available. Real trouble getting into the Business class lounge at Moscow. Once at the transfer desk I had to bargain with the Aeroflot ticketing agent from waiting five hours to enter the lounge to only having to wait two hours to enter. For some odd reason Aeroflot has a rule in place where one can only enter the lounge two hours before the one's flight departs Moscow. Other than the trouble caused at the Moscow airport I will fly Aeroflot again as the service is great, and the Business class ticket from IAD to DEL is cheap.

Oslo-Moscow-Oslo in May 2007, economy class. Both flights departed and arrived sharply in time, cabin crew and meals were quite good. Tupolev- 154 - enough leg space, renovated cabin, very nice brand-new livery - nothing to complain about. I do not give them 5 stars, because for the top mark the cabin crew really has to smile at least sometimes, and there is clearly some room for improvement regarding lunches.

My first (and last) experiance with Aeroflot was not good. The flight itself and food was okay, but heaven help you if they lose your luggage. I arrived in Moscow from Toronto last June and my luggage never arrived. The lost and found personal were in a world of their own, and just told me to wait as they conveniently took their break for 2 hours. After another 2 hours of waiting one finally checked on the where bouts of my luggage, and it was still in Toronto. Having missed my ride to the hotel and 100 US to find alternative transportation, I attempted the next day for 3 hours to get someone at Aeroflot to talk to. I was promised luggage the next day, but after waiting, it never arrived. Long story short, I spent at least 4 hours each day for 9 days trying to contact Aeroflot each time only to have them promise my luggage on the next flight to be left waiting empty handed again and again. No offer of compensation was made at any time, as I had to spend $1500 to buy new clothes etc, since after a week, I assumed it was lost or stolen since I never could get a straight answer from Aeroflot at any time. I lucked out calling the airport 9 days later as my luggage finally arrived, however that was due to my own footwork without any assistance from Aeroflot. After I got home, they offered $100 after numerous unanswered emails prior. All I can say is never again will I fly with that outfit.

We had the worse series of flights I have EVER had on Aeroflot. Complete nightmare from beginning to end. JFK to Moscow Sheremetyevo, returning from St. Petersburg through Moscow to JFK. One of our bags did not arrive in Moscow with us. Reporting the bag missing was a two hour nightmare, with a series of service people who would appear and disappear at random. One would come, give us a form to fill out, leave their desk and then no one was there for another ten minutes. Another person came, gave us another form, told us to get it stamped at customs. We came back, the second person was gone and no one was manning the desk. This went on and on and on. Finally, we got a print out showing our missing baggage claim number. There was a phone number on the form and they told us to call the next day to see if our bag was on the following flight. We called the next day and it turns out that was a non-working number. We had our hotel call, just to make sure we weren't doing anything wrong. We went to an Aeroflot sales office and sat there for an hour while their representatives tried to get us a working phone number, any working phone number. We finally got through, spoke with someone who said our bag hadn't arrived and to call back the next day. We took the phone number and called back each day through that week. When we arrived back in the US, we spoke with a lovely guy in charge of baggage for Aeroflot at JFK. He remembered sending our bags the day after we left. He confirmed with Moscow that they had received our bags the day after we had arrived. I have no idea why we were told repeatedly in Moscow that our bags were not there. To add insult to injury, the bag was a wreck and our camera was missing. Minor but still annoying: There was no movie on any flight. The entertainment system was totally broken on the flight to Moscow. On the way back it worked on the first half of the plane but not the back. I'm a vegetarian. Even though I specified with our reservations that I was a vegetarian, I didn't have a meal on either flight. I'm willing to give them a pass on the first flight because I didn't reconfirm the day before flying like I usually do On the way back, however, I made sure to confirm and they still screwed it up. Not so much as an "I'm sorry" from the flight attendant. So, I had nothing to eat for 10 hours save for a roll and some lousy fruitcup on one flight. At the check in in St. Petersburg, it took four surly desk clerks to figure out how to check our baggage through to our final destination. There was a line of at least 30 people behind who were held up because of their inability to check us in. The transfer in Moscow from Sheremetyevo I, where we arrived on our domestic flight from St. Petersburg, to Sheremetyevo II, where the international flights depart, was comically convuluted. It took an hour and fifty minutes of a two hour transfer time to get from one terminal to another. I'm sure some of that was Russia passport and customs control, but a number of the people we dealt with were Aeroflot employees, so I think some of the responsibility for shutting passengers around falls on their shoulders. Most minor - you had to pay for alcoholic drinks. Quite frankly, after all the fiasco due to Aeroflot, I figured the least they could do was give me a drink.

I've flown Aeroflot a number of times ever since I was a child. It was still the only USSR airline then. Therefore it was very interesting to see how gradually the company was improving reaching world standards. I have developed certain liking to this airline and was quite satisfied with the trips most of the times. My last trip with Aeroflot was earlier this year. I flew Kiev-Moscow-Bishkek and back. The flight to Moscow was a bit of adventure as Aeroflot still uses Tupolev 154M on this route and because of poor weather conditions (strong wind) the plane from Moscow could not land and the deparuture was delayed. Most of passengers had to transfer in SVO so everyone was quite nervous. The plane came 4 hours later but it was very quickly served for departure. The crew were quite friendly and helpful. Instead of the usual 1 hour 30 minutes the flight took only an hour. In SVO we managed to catch our next flight with no problems, however the ground crew were not very nice as for me. The next flight was on A321 and it was really great. Nice, clean and new aeroplane. Very quiet compared to Tupolev. The cabin crew - very welcoming. I am happy Aeroflot has improved a lot since I last traveled with them (back in 2003, flight form SVO to Irkutsk and back). I think it is a very wise decision to replace old Soviet aircraft with modern planes.

Nizhnyvartovsk - Moscow, Business Class both ways. On time departures and arrivals both times. Tu-154, first time on this aircraft - very smooth. Perfectly adequate Cabin Service, but no IFE. Not the greatest seats but OK for a 3 1/2 hour flight. All in all a better experience than I had expected - and Sky Team Airmiles.

29 January 2007

Fly Aeroflot at least twice a month, mainly international short haul. Lately some domestic flights as well. It seems onboard service is improving by the month. A few weeks ago on a PAR-SVO flight they handed out portable video players (each containing about 12 recent releases) to business class passengers so for me inflight entertainment was great. Food can be hit or miss but overall above average, and they show they try which is more than I can say about others. Overall I think the airline is doing all it can but it still suffers from the SVO experience. Hopefully that will change with the new Terminal 3. Also security checks are as good as any I have seen lately without the ridiculous you sometimes get from the TSA. By now I make a point to travel with them even when alternatives with Western operators exist.

21 January 2007

SVO to BKK business class. The aircraft was an IL-96. With regard to the seats, they were wide enough but the legroom was insufficient. I gather the business-class seats on Aeroflot's Boeing-767's are much better. The cabin staff were very friendly and solicitous. The food was OK but not as good as the food I've experienced in business class on other long international flights. My greatest complaint is about the lavatories - they smelled of urine. I suspect the flushing fluid had not been changed in a while. Also to be noted is that there is no separate check-in at SVO for business-class passengers. In short, Aeroflot wasn't bad but it's got a long way to go before it catches up with say Singapore Airlines.

12 January 2007

I've flown Aeroflot on a total number of 8 flights now. My very first flight was an overall surprisingly positive experience, probably because I had only heard the worst stories prior to my first flight with the Russians. You get what you pay. This means that the level of staff friendliness and additional services onboard is somewhat below an airline like Cathay Pacific, however Aeroflot has been an excellent experience on almost all areas! Except from the hardly existing inflight entertainment, I would rank Aeroflot at least on level with all Western European airlines I've flown. Nice meals and an overall good level of service indeed. Especially surprising has been the level of service in Moscow airport (from the Aeroflot crew!). Once my flight BKK-SVO was 4.5 hrs delayed due to engine problems in BKK, resulting in an already-left flight SVO-CPH when we arrived. I hardly got time to think the worst, before a staff member handed me boarding passes for SVO-Helsinki (Aeroflot) and Helsinki-CPH (SAS Scandinavian), meaning that I was less than 2 hrs delayed on my final arrival to CPH. That's what I call service! I can only recommend Aeroflot and nothing less than 3 stars is a fair ranking of the airline.

I've flown twice: Warsaw-Moscow-Beijing (round trip), but the 2nd time returned from Hong Kong via Moscow to Warsaw. Both journeys - business class. Excellent service! Very friendly crew. The most important advantage of flying aboard Aeroflot is the incredibly low price for such a good service, often better than western high-priced one! Seats are new and comfortable.

15 December 2006

Flew Aeroflot a few times, Düsseldorf-Moscow on brand new Airbus planes, great seats, nice service. Also lots of flights between Moscow- Ekaterinburg, TU 154 and once even TU 134 - great experience. I like the TU 154 very much, lots of legroom, if the seat in front of you is not taken you can put it down and get lots of leg space. Professional service on domestic flights as well. Only problem is Sheremetyovo Airport, very rude and unfriendly staff, taxi-mafia and poor organisation. Last time I spend two hours waiting in line for boarding, disastrous.

10 December 2006

JFK-SVO Round Trip, Economy class, July 2006. Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Excellent service by Aeroflot. I was a little bit nervous about the flight, but none of the instances of poor service or dirty planes were substantiated. FA's polite, friendly and spoke excellent English. Food excellent on the way to SVO. The fish meal on the return flight was edible, but not as good as the steak meal. Beverages served frequently. I used the bathroom once each way, and have no complaints about its cleanliness. Sheremetyevo customs was not as bad as people claimed, either arriving or departing. Customs upon departure was definitely understaffed. My luggage was inspected by a friendly female agent. I would certainly fly on Aeroflot again.

20 November 2006

LHR-SVO-PVG-SVO-LHR Business Class: having flown Aeroflot many times during the Soviet era it was good to see that they are now on par with any other national carrier with excellent on board service and food (even the much disliked IL96 seemed comparable with the equivalent A340).However the downside is the notorious hub at Sheremetyevo which bears all the scars of a crumbled regime and the business class lounge at SVO has much to be desired.

17 November 2006

Flew Aeroflot for the first time from DEL-Moscow and then after a brief stay in Moscow over to JFK (business class). Excellent overall with great prices. Compares very well with KLM, NW; better than Alitalia. Seat comfort was good, even on the Ilyushin-96 plane. The 767 to JFK had the comfort of reclining flat-bed seats. Meals DEL-SVO were excellent but my special vegetarian meal SVO-JFK was marginal. Arrival into SVO was hassle-free. Not a reflection on Aeroflot, but Departure at SVO was tense. I say, give it a try. Aeroflot in Skyteam era definitely meets the standards of safety, punctuality and comfort.

2 November 2006

Moscow - JFK and Tokyo - Moscow several times this year. Aeroflot is the world's best kept secret. Always a seat available on long haul flights; always on time; food very good; decent inflight entertainment system; good service; leather seats that compete head on with Air France or Cathay's. Have experienced no delays, courteous personnel. Issue was SVO immigration on arrival - but TSA checks for flights to and from the US is far worse than any Moscow airport experience. While the US is chasing the Evian bottle drinkers on its flights, Russia is changing fast and so is its flagship airline. Fly Aeroflot.

22 October 2006

LAX-SVO economy class just last week. I have to admit being a bit nervous taking off, but, like the rest of Russia, so much has changed. I was impressed with the leather seats, and the pilots handled a tricky, foggy landing with a 300 foot cloud ceiling at SVO flawlessly. Horror stories about the customs clearance leaving SVO abound, but I found the most frustrating part was the hand search of luggage for American-bound flights now required by the TSA. Without that, it seems to go fairly quickly. Also, from the runway, the Sheremetyevo 3 expansion due next year looks great. Flight attendants aren't as friendly as most in the Western US, but frankly they reminded me of those on Continental or US Airways regional routes.

CDG-SVO Economy class. New Airbus 320 with nice leather seats. Flight attendants were very polite with genuine smiles! Food was little dissapointment compare to Air France service. Small tray with salad and Turkey "cordon blue" with mashed potatoes were served. Coffee or tea service followed. Alcohol against payment on Aeroflot! Cost savings? Good inflight product. I would fly Aeroflot again.

15 October 2006

Bratislava-Moscow-Bishkek several times in 2006. The flight from Bratislava to Moscow was okay. Bad organisation of SVO passenger transfer - wrong gates shown on boarding pass (happened three times on my transit flight), bad mannered airport staff. The transit passengers are processed in a very strange way - they took your passport and ticket and disappeared somewhere - without any notification what they are going to do. Once I got back my boarding pass and passport from another passenger (Chinese) who had obtained a lot of passports from the staff with request to distribute among other waiting transit passengers. Strange ?

10 October 2006

Aeroflot on their domestic route Moscow - Krasnodar. Check-in in Moscow was easy and problem-less though in a very old Sheremetyevo-I terminal. The departure of the flight to Krasnodar was delayed for about 2 hours with no explanations given as for the reasons of the delay. Later on, in the plane, I overheard the flight attendants discussing between themselves what should be said to the passengers with respect to the cause of the delay. They decided "technical reasons". Indeed, the plane (TU-154M) clearly showed her age. Not much concern of safety - the belt in my seat was broken and no attention was given as to pre-flight security check (such as tables remained opened during the take-off and landing). The rest of the flight was uneventful. Food was quite modest for the flight duration (about 2 hours). The flight back to Moscow one week later was again delayed, this time because of the weather (fog both in Krasnodar and in Moscow). The plane was very old TU-134, noisy and very narrow, one of the toilets did not work, smelled, and the flight attendant had to use some kind of a spray several times during the flight. Food again was quite modest, but newspapers and coffee/drinks served often throughout the flight. Summing up, I would fly with Aeroflot again domestically for only one reason - I can earn my frequent flyer miles with Delta flying Aeroflot - miles for domestic flights appeared immediately on my SkyMiles account.

St Petersburg-Moscow. Flight was operated by TU-134 of Aeroflot-Nord. Interior was 1960's with open overhead compartment, thin metal plates as tables and curtains on windows. Flight departed and arrived on time and service with smiles. Coffee/tea, bread with cheese and ham and a candy bar were served during this one hour flight. I like travelling in Russia - it's so different than in the west. It was a fun ride with good service.

London- Moscow-Volgograd return. It has been 2 years since I have travelled Aeroflot and was surprised. Travelled business class from London to Moscow and on the way back. Service standards are up with the best in the world (on the plane at least). Was not impressed with Sheremetyovo. Travelled Economy to Volgograd and back and wasn't expecting much; however, the attendants were attentive and extremely helpful - they even had genuine smiles! I can see that this airline is moving up in the world and I hope that it continues this way. Good job Aeroflot.

I have recently flown with Aeroflot Moscow-London return. Overall it was very nice. The food was perfect for such a short flight, there weren't any IFE (even audio),but I don't care about that. Seating was great and comfy(leather), you could stretch out, plane was clean and good-looking! Inflight service was interesting-crew did everything very quick and efficient, but they looked like they hate every passenger onboard...Both flights were on time. I like to see the improvements of Aeroflot, only bad thing that I have never seen smiling crew there(though all of them do their job perfectly).Overall, Aeroflot is a great airline!

18 July 2006

LAX-SVO-LAX, economy class. 3.5 stars. One star was taken off for 4 hour delay in LAX and lousy customer service in Aeroflot's LA office. They never return calls, very often you hear busy signal and I had to call them again and again. After the registration and because of the delay I received a coupon (about $15 value) redeemable in almost every LAX eatery. The flight was smooth, seats were good, with enough legroom for me (6’2” 230 lbs), good food, free beer, and I don’t care about in- flight entertainment. Aeroflot is the ONLY company flying from US West coast to Russia non-stop. On my way back they lost my luggage (I think it never been loaded, because I saw plenty of unclaimed luggage at the terminal). I removed one star for it. But Aeroflot staff was very helpful and understanding and they shipped me my luggage by FedEx Overnight (my final destination was Reno, NV) three days later, informing me about any progress and I returned them half-star. Another good thing. Couple days before my return flight, I dislocated my ankle and was limping badly. The girl at the registration desk saw my conditions and offered me a seat at the emergency exit row with a mile of legroom. Probably, she was compensating for the Aeroflot Dollar-Ruble conversion rate R35:$1 (with the average exchange point rate R28:$1 and US Consulate rate R30:$1). Overall experience with Aeroflot is good.

KBP-SVO, economy. TU-154, with no space in the overhead compartment. Service moderately efficient, no smiles however. Food was quite strange - they had those little pies, rather stale. I was sitting in the first row in the economy, so the tray tables were attached by the FA during the flight. Yet, they later forgot to remove those, so we landed with our tray-tables still in front of us - talk about safety.

Moscow-Adler-Moscow. Aeroflot domestic flight. My expectations were low. But I was suprised to learn that this airline is not bad at all. Flights both ways were perfect and right on time, though let down by abysmal meal (but this is only 2 hour domestic flight). Flight attendants were pleasant and helpful. The aircraft was old Il-86, seemingly in good condition and, as expected, without inflight entertainment. Absence of IFE was compensated by the great inflight magazine. Big improvement by Aeroflot over the last 10 years.

1 June 2006

I was pleasantly surprised by my Aeroflot flight from SVO to CDG. The plane was superb - brand new Airbus. The leather seats were comfortable, if a bit narrow, but what can you expect from a single- aisle plane like the A320? The food was excellent and very tasty, and it was served by flight attendants who were very pleasant and upbeat. The next time I fly to Russia, it will be on Aeroflot. It is simply a better value, and a more complete Russian travel experience.

London to Moscow and back with Aeroflot. The plane was new looking, the service was great and the plane took off on time at both ends. That's more than I can say for British Airways who have never taken off on time and at least 4 times the price.

DEL-SVO-DEL Businesss Class on IL96. It was a pleasant experience. The check-in at Delhi could have been better organized. There was a dedicated check-in counter for business class passengers but they were checking in Economy passengers through it as well. The flight itself was quite comfortable. The staff was very pleasant and attentive and the food was delicious - drinks were fairly good as well. On the return, Moscow SVO Airport is as bad as it gets - only 2 check-in counters, no separate business class check-in, unpleasant staff, often rude! But no complaints with the inflight experience. Overall, I would recommend it if you are getting a good deal on the price front.

NRT-SVO-NRT. Out bound economy flight full of quiet Japanese. Meal of pepper steak - excellent. Took off on time and landed on time. Crew unsmiling but got on with it. Return flight on time. The planes were both 767. The toilets could do with some refurbishment. The alcohol is not free. IFE is meagre - French movie with Russian dubbing. I am not a great screen watcher. They had the normal flight map. All in all I felt that the Russians knew what they were doing and got on with it.

Aeroflot have improved incredibly over the last 10 years. I have been flying them for just over 10 years into Russia and over to SouthEast Asia. Their business and first class is super value for money and the service on some of their planes is excellent. You must ensure that you fly on western aircraft, Airbus or Boeing. I have done the IL's and Tupolev's 134 - 154 the 86 and 96 etc. Just don't! Interesting experiences but better avoided. I would advise anyone going to Moscow to use Aeroflot business class over BA's, the planes are new, the seats are real business seats, not the nonsense BA employ on narrow body planes. In short, if you select western aircraft Aeroflot are good in comparison to any other airline. Russian airports and passport control are not their fault - although if you fly in business or first - you can get fast tracked VIP'd through Moscow - just make sure you tell them. I think Aeroflot economy fares are far too expensive - even though their business fares are pretty good.

YYZ-SVO. Flight was on an older B767. Flight began with a wet napkin service, followed by drinks (cash bar for beer - $2, wine between $4-5, and Russian-imported tropicana apple and orange juice, and Pepsi). Meals consisted of dinner and snack, both catered by Cathay Pacific so the curry chicken dinner, and chinese chow mein for snack was of very high standard. Duty-free followed before lights turned off. No inflight entertainment - no headphones for music, no movies for the 9 hour flight. Crew did come around once or twice during the night for water, but they did have cups of orange juice and water in the galley for pax to help themselves. Overall, I do recommend Aeroflot if you are flying to Moscow direct - it is very convenient. They have a very good value-for-money product, and service is professional and efficient. They do not, however, put on that inviting smile that the Asian airlines do, or the buddy-buddy manner that the North American airlines sometimes use. This is okay by me, because they get the job done, gave me a safe journey, and their meals lived up to their reputation.

Business from Munich to Beijing via SVO. Both flights could not have been nicer. The seats on the long haul flight were fully flat and very comfortable. Food was great (we even got caviar!!) and very well presented (on the table, no trays). Flight attendants were very polite and very eager to do everything they can. They even served a small breakfast only 30 minutes prior to landing! Their inflight entertainment is okay. Everybody gets a digeplayer which features on demand movies and audio. There was a selection of about 6 movies, three "Mr. Bean" short features, a good selection of music and some Russian cartoons and movies. Transit in Moscow was a different thing: The airport is ugly, practically no seating and you are only allowed to use the business class lounge two hours before the departure of your onward flight. The lounge itself is a disgrace: dirty, crowded and very limited seating. If Aeroflot can change this they will have a five star business product (much better than Lufthansa)! On may way back I travelled from HKG. There, Aeroflot uses the Cathay lounge which is simply great.

JFK-LHR Business Class. My check-in at JFK was typically hectic with a dirty boarding area, but once I was onboard, the flight attendants could not have been nicer! Very sincere and friendly, helping me with my overhead bag and offering me champagne and handing out menus. Once we were airborne, hot towels and drink orders were taken and a small canape was given (wonderful meat in filo dough) to go along with the drink. Dinner order was taken and another drink offered. Yet another canape was given, then soup, and salad and then the main course - I think a choice of three items. Dinner was hot and very good. The only strange thing was a paper napkin. Dessert was fantastic along with coffee and after dinner drinks. Flight attendants could not be nice enough or quicker to offer more drinks. After dinner, new movie cd systems were handed out that included a small but current choice of American and Russian movies and cartoons. The lay flat (although angled) seats were very nice and comfortable on this 767. I was also amazed at how clean the cabin was - fresh and nicely colored with hues of blue. I decided to sleep and was very comfortable with my "satin" pillow cased pillow and my woollen blanket and I never slid down in the tilted bed/seat. I awoke to another smiling face and a hot towel and breakfast was served. Eggs hot and bread very fresh and warm. An English/Russian immigration video was shown prior to our arrival that helped for those new to SVO Airport. We were one of the first planes of the morning so immigration was a breeze. Good news - SVO has tried to take away the USSR look of the airport and installed brighter lights in the arrivals area-a BIG help. The area past customs is still a cattle corral with many offers for pirate taxis but that will never change. Please always go to the desk just past customs and use a real taxi. Many horror stories of pirate taxis robbing tourists. All in all, an amazing flight experience. Aeroflot, you put our US carriers (read: Delta) to shame with the great service clean planes and wonderful cabin crews. Last item - as usual the flight deck crew never talk to you-it is just the Russian way so don't worry about it!

I booked my flight from London to Bangkok via Moscow in June 05. I will fly out on Friday 16 December. I was notified about changes in schedule on 12 December, telling me that on the return, I would have a 14 hour stay in Moscow airport overnight. I would arrive one day late. Upon enquiry about accommodation, Aeroflot refused to provide accommodation despite the short notice in schedule change and suggested I cancel the booking - 4 days prior to departure, 6 month after booking - make up your own mind about customer service.

Pluses - Good food and quick service. Minuses - No onboard entertainment. Worn aircraft interiors. Rigid, somewhat unreasonable check-in staff in Hong Kong who stood on principle and required that I pay excess baggage charges (4600 Hong Kong dollars) on a flight that was half empty! I had to throw out all the food and some old clothing to reduce it to 2500 dollars.

2 November 2005

Flight from Geneva to Novosibirsk, via Moscow Sheremetyevo and return. GVA to SVO on modern, very confortable A319 equipped with leather seats and good legroom. SVO to NOV on older IL86. The seats are large and there is good legroom, but they are also very much used and that means that they are very hard. All 4 flights have departed exactly ontime. The food onboard could be more varied as I had to eat 4 times exactly the same food, twice out of plastic servers. Staff onboard could be more careful about safety procedures as there haven't been any checks about fasten seatbelts / stored tables / and seat leans in vertical position on the A319. On the IL86 there wasn't even a safety procedure demonstration of the crew and they hardly could speak english. All in all the flight was okay, but too expensive for the quality of the service. However, I think that Aeroflot has very much improved lately in service and safety.

Beijing - London (via Moscow) return. The outbound trip of my holiday to China was fine and I was half looking forward to telling friends that their preconceptions on the airline had been wrong. Unfortunately for me, they were right. Delayed 6 hours out of Beijing, told my seat was no longer available as some VIPs were ushered on in front of me (this is at the gate with boarding card in hand!) after 20m of shouting in array of languages, our seats magically appeared. The plane was an old lumbering Ilunsk 86 with zero legroom, that had to be re-routed via Novosibirsk, 3 hours there on the runway to refuel, arrived Moscow 12 hours later than expected hence missed transfer to London. Ground staff were rude, abrasive and dismissive. Night in a hotel in Moscow. Return to London was luxurious in a new Airbus A321.

We flew Aeroflot from Dubai to Moscow Business Class August 3rd then to St Petersburg. Returned Moscow Dubai Business Class August 13th. The flights from Moscow to Dubai and return were very good. Food, drinks and service very good. Plenty of room in seats. In flight entertainment by small DVD player which was easy to operate. Flight from Moscow to St Petersburg was in older plane and not so good but food and drinks OK. Separate bus for only six Business Class passengers. Recommend Dubai Moscow flight to anyone

London - Moscow. Handled by miserable agents of Air France at LHR. Aircraft an IL96, with masses of legroom. Take off was 10 minutes late, but arrival 5 minutes early. Crew were OK , but with few smiles and I could not see the safety demo due to the bulkhead. Service comprised of drinks (just one each) then a hot meal of chicken and rice, which was pleasent and suprisingly tasty. A vegetarian option was also avilable. Two dry rolls and a yoghurt were also on the tray. No further service thereafter. After arriving,e the aircraft taxied to the end of a cul-d-sac and then the engines were switched off, so every one got up. Then the aircraft was pushed backwards into its parking position (first one on me), but little effort was made to get passengers to sit down. Immigration at SVO took over an hour and then a further wait of some 20 mins for luggage. Generally better than I expected in the air - but Moscow SVO as bad as many have stated in the past.

Boeing 767 from LAX to SVO and from Seattle to SVO - planes are very clean and nice, blue leather seats. The staff is friendly, they did have reading materials in both Russian and English. The meals are great, they also provided sleeping masks and mint smelling hot wash towels to wipe your hand and face before the meal. The only bad thing I have experienced is the Video equipment seems to never work, it did on one flight! I have also flown the smaller TU-135 to Perm Russia and SU-154 to Saint Petersburg, older planes, very small seats, if you have no one in front of you and you push the seat it will collapse forward. The carry on is minimal, a regular carry on suitcase must be checked it. The staff is friendly and food is OK. You can upgrade to first class and it is pretty nice! I also have flown Delta JFK-SVO - not bad but I prefer Aeroflot.

12 July 2005

Hamburg-Moscow, July 2005. The plane, a very old Tupolew 154M has the narrow seating. Departure on time. Since the TU 154 has almost no cabin bins, several carry-on cases are stored in front of the emergency exits, effectively blocking them (I sat next to one of them). As usual, no one cares. The instructions for the escape slide are also nice: you have to open a (wooden) cabinet next to the emergency exit, pull a rope, unroll the slide and move it out of the exit and then inflate. Imagine doing that in an accident. Food was acceptable and crew sometimes a little clumsy, but friendly. After landing in Moscow (on time) we had to wait almost 20 minutes on the runway till a gate was available and then another 15 minutes before the finger is pushed to the plane. As usual, aircondition is out during this time.

HKG-SVO in Business Class. I have not flown with them for a long time, since my not so positive experience almost 2.5 years ago, but they have come a long way since then. Their new image is fantastic - trendy colors, very tasty food, excellent selection of drinks, comfortable seats. I was really surprised be how good their service is now, very helpful and cheerful FAs (lots of smiles). I would not hesitate to use them again in the near future.

SVO-FCO on a clean but worn Tupolev 154 with cramped seating in economy. Next time I'm on a 154 I'll definitely go business class, Aeroflot must be the only airline providing long-haul type seats on European routes in business and their fares sound very reasonable for the added comfort you get. Inflight service very good, although there's no IFE and not even small screens showing the route on TU-154s; we got a drink and a small snack, followed some 20 minutes later by a hot breakfast consisting of a choice of omelette or sausages, a bun, butter, jam, a truly delicious coconut cake and yogurt, besides of course coffee or tea and a second round of drinks (if you just asked). I'm not impressed with the ground staff at Sheremetyevo, I knew by previous experiences that my luggage would never fit in the overhead bin of a TU-154, yet the girl at the Aeroflot counter steadily refused to register my bag and almost shouted at me it had to be carried as hand luggage, resulting in chaos once on board since we couldn't find a place to store it. Given the price, I would always use Aeroflot of all the airlines flying out of SVO.

I was happily surprised with my flight experience. The staff were pleasant, the meals were hot and the planes were clean. I have now flown with Aeroflot 4 times, and each time my experience has gotten better. I would fly with them again. The only disappointment would be that there is no entertainment system in economy.
