"processes were very efficient"

I must say I was quite surprised with this relatively new airport. It is well designed and all check-in, security and boarding processes were very efficient. The free wifi connection is probably one of the best services I've experienced so far. The choice of dining and shopping are also very good. The airport itself is quite far from the city but there is a train service to the city.

First time contributing to this thread, and I must say: Kuala Namu International Airport looks pretty modern and roomy indeed, something I truly want to see in a functioning airport. I mean, yes, it has opened recently, yet, I saw in the pre-opening photos a lot of modern features, from streamlined check-in desks and a variety of shops (I'm surprised I saw a branch of Cotton On at the airport), to modern jetways and small plants placed along the waiting areas near gates (I wonder if those are actual palm trees).

The airport of Medan has been moved from Polonia to Kuala Namu International Airport (KNIA). KNIA is now the most advanced and the second largest airport in Indonesia. It is also the first integrated airport rail link in Indonesia. The whole area is free from smoke (means that they provide and manage the smoking area well). The baggage claim area is well-designed. Restrooms are always clean and have no pungent smell.

This is a well designed airport. There is no hassle from porters and taxi operators. Checking in is very fast and efficient. Arrival luggage handling is very good.

Kuala Namu International Airport is it is the second largest airport after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport but the first airport which has a direct rail link to Medan city the capital of North Sumatra. Kuala Namu is the most comfortable and the most modern airport in Indonesia.

Finally the new Medan Airport opened after a few years delay and it was just 2 weeks old when I touched down at Kuala Namu. The terminal building itself is stunning a combination of Suvarnabhumi and KLIA with lots of daylight. The gate holdrooms are huge with comfy chairs and you can see the tarmac clearly. Airside and landside shops and restaurants are not entirely opened but lots of interesting shops and restaurants will open soon. Check in area is also airy huge shiny and modern. This is the first airport in Indonesia with a direct rail link to the city and the train station even though its not entirely finished also stunningly designed. Arrival areas still has a lot of things to be completed as the airport is just soft opened. Hopefully when its officially opened in September all the facilities are ready.

I and my wife travelled via Medan Polonia Airport twice in December 2012. I lived in Medan for over 10 years in the past and have relatives still living there. I'm trying to review this with appropriate comparisons against other airports I've visited by taking into account their relative sizes and passenger movements. I think Polonia airport was still terrible. As soon as we stepped outside the arrival terminal taxi drivers approached us making us feeling uncomfortable. The taxi was unmetered. We were charged IDR50k for a short travel. On the departure we arrived earlier (3 hrs before flight) and had to wait until the Garuda check-in counter was opened. There was absolutely no single seat or chair anywhere from the entrance up to the check-in area. We were forced to sit on the trolley and on the floor. The check-in process was messy. Some people stood in between 2 queuing lines. Some people blocked the queue although they did not intend to check-in. When I compared Polonia's today with Polonia 10 years ago I absolutely saw almost no improvement except for a renovation that followed a fire disaster a few years ago.

I have used Polonia six times in the last four year both international and domestic arrival and departure. No problems with taxis overcharging just as for any airport do your research. Be affirmative informed and polite.

The state of Indonesian airports is sad. This hub is dank and dirty. Wait until you're on the plane to use the restroom. If you're just arriving you will be besieged by porters who will grab your bags without asking then hustle to the exit. Just say no with a smile and that should do the trick. The airport uses a taxi voucher system which will charge you a flat (tho grossly inflated) fee depending on your hotel. Expect to pay IDR55000 easily double what you would pay on a meter. Not the best introduction to Indonesia if this is your first port of call.
