"airport met my expectations"
Jeremy Chan (Hong Kong)
Hiroshima Airport is a small domestic airport and international services at this airport have only been commenced recently, so I do not have a high expectation upon my visit in mid-November. The airport is small and there are only limited facilities and restaurants available, and they charge 100 JPY for people who wish to visit the observation deck-a down side compared to the major airports in Japan where the observation decks are free of charge. Access to the airport is not at all convenient, as no trains or subway lines can reach the airport. The only choices are limousine buses and rental cars from other cities. Nevertheless, the airport is very clean and the ground staff (both immigration and airline staff) are efficient. It took me shorter than 15 minutes from disembarking the aircraft to leaving the airport. The limited number of restaurants can also provide a satisfactory range of food choices for visitors. Given that Hiroshima Airport is only a small regional airport, the airport has met my expectations and I would not hesitate in using this airport again upon my next travel to Japan.

Hiroshima is a small regional airport with virtually all flights internal Japanese flights. Most westerners visit Hiroshima using land routes from other cities so the airport is not as western 'friendly' as bigger Japanese airports. This means there are few public announcements in English though the standard of English for check in staff was very good. The food concession stands also cater to Japanese tastes only so you are out of luck if you only like western food. There are also no magazines or books in any language other than Japanese. Surprisingly wide range of souvenirs though most won't be much use to long haul travelers (e.g. frozen salmon steaks oysters etc). Transport to downtown very good as a limousine bus leaves from outside terminal and arrives pretty much next to the Bomb Dome which most people are going to.

I like this little airport it's actually one of my favourites but they can't cope at busy times. 7.30 am on Saturday 28 December three internal flights leaving within 30 minutes of each other huge queue to get baggage dropped and scanned (by one machine). Equally huge queue though security. Just made flight despite arriving well before advertised bag-drop time. No time to see or do anything.

Hiroshima's airport is somewhat small but is intelligently laid out and easy to navigate. Perhaps because of its relative newness it appears to be quite pristine inside with a good range of services for travellers. The biggest drawback is the distance from Hiroshima city - well over a half hour outside of the city. As another reviewer noted the IBEX flight requires walking out onto the tarmac which could be a hassle in inclement weather.

I live in Hiroshima and regularly use Hiroshima Airport to fly to Tokyo Narita on my way to Europe. This IBEX flight leaves quite early and I usually travel by taxi from Hiroshima. Check-in and security checks are always very smooth but an annoying problem with the IBEX flight to Narita is that the plane is too small to use the normal gates. So we use Gate A walk down the stairs and across the apron to board the plane. Umbrellas are supplied on rainy days. I would use Hiroshima Airport more frequently when travelling to central Tokyo but I think that the plane still cannot beat the Shinkansen for this distance (just over 900 kilometers). It is a pain to have to travel out to the airport 45 kilometers from Hiroshima undergo the check-in and security check board the flight and then have to travel from Haneda to central Tokyo. The journey via JR is only marginally longer and involves far less hassle. Nevertheless as a regional airport Hiroshima is very good.
