Barra Eoligarry Airport by Matthew Ross

I agree with Geoffrey McNab's comments. Barra Airport offers the only scheduled
passenger service to land on a beach - and what a beach! The tiny airport terminal is modern
and efficient. The operator Highlands & Islands Airports Limited now has a no smoking policy in all
its terminal buildings. No-one can truly call him/herself an aviation enthusiast without having
sampled a Twin Otter beach landing on this lovely little Scottish island.

Tiny. But stunning location. Barra Aiport sits on the edge of a wide beach on the Scottish Island of
Barra. Twice a day (once in winter) flights from Glasgow and Benbencula land on one of the three
runways. But these are no ordinary tarmac runways. These are marked out on the sand of the beach -
and only when the tide is out! The flights are the only British Airways flights where the timetable
is marked "subject to tide".
The terminal, a proper little toy-town terminal complete with tiny terminal,
control tower, big burly
firemen and one check-in desk. No compromise though on safety checks and procedures. Be sure to be
here in good time to watch the incoming Twin Otter fly in and land on the beach. The tiny cafe sells
lovely home made organic snacks and the whole experiences is a joy if you have only been used to the
hustle and bustle and chaos of some large well known international terminals.
If a glorious sunny day check-in good and early and take time to stroll three hundred yards up over
the dunes to see the other stunning beach close to this amazing little airport.
