World Airport Ratings are based on a comprehensive study of almost 500 airport product and service items. The criteria includes key items of process efficiency, terminal comfort and cleanliness, passenger facilities and staff service. Service ratings covers both the official staff (immigration, police, security and customs), as well as more general airport staff (shops, restaurants and cafes, help counters etc).
Airports do not have to be large hub facilities to achieve the highest 5-Star and 4-Star Airport ratings. The rating assesses each airports target market and customer base, to determine it’s Quality success in that area. For example, a small regional airport serving point-to-point to routes is not expected the offer the same facilities as a global hub airport, but both airport types are eligible to meet the top tier, 5-Star Airport rating.

The prestigious 5-Star Airport rating is awarded to airports achieving the highest, overall Quality performance. This 5-Star Airport rating recognises those airports providing excellent facilities for customers, which combine with high quality airport staff service. The Airport Quality ranking covers all front-line areas such as customer service, security, immigration, shop outlets and food and beverage facilities.
The 4-Star Airport rating is awarded to airports delivering a good overall Quality performance. This 4-Star Airport rating recognises airports that perform well across of areas product facilities and front-line staff service, with some lack of total consistency that may currently prevent these airports from achieving a 5-Star Rating. This service ranking covers all front-line areas such as customer service, security, immigration, shop outlets and food and beverage facilities.
The 3-Star Airport rating is awarded to airports delivering a fair total Quality performance. This 3-Star Airport rating recognises airports that perform to a fair standard across areas of product facilities and front-line staff service, but it is some product and/or service limitations that currently prevent these airports from meeting the 4-Star Airport ranking criteria. This service ranking covers all front-line areas such as customer service, security, immigration, shop outlets and food and beverage facilities.
The 2-Star Airport rating reflects an airport experience that falls below the industry average across many of the ranking criteria. The 2-Star Airports may achieve satisfactory ratings for some assessment, items but the total customer experience is judged to be poor and/or too inconsistent for both product and service standards. This service ranking covers all front-line areas such as customer service, security, immigration, shop outlets and food and beverage facilities.
