Washington Dulles Airport

Waited in line to go through immigration for ages. Immigration officer was rather robotic if not icy. I witnessed one officer playing a silly childish game with a visitor. This lady and her child who were coming in from Iceland showed her two passports to the officer politely and with a smile . The officer then just remained staring at her for the longest time and not speaking to her and all because she still had her hand on the passports. He wanted her to remove her hand but refused to ask her to do that. We fly into States three times a year. This airport is the runner up to Miami as one of the worst to fly into if you are a foreigner.

Due to huge immigration lines me and many more passengers lost our connecting flight and I had to wait 14 hours at the airport for the next flight. We had to wait more than 1.5 hours in the immigration lines while the US citizens could get served within few min. After waiting 1.5 hours in line and when it was my time to get checked they opened the checking points for all either US or non-US citizens. It took the staff 1.5 hours to think of this! Thus we all lost our connections. If you are a non-US citizen you better avoid this airport.

I can not believe how this airport is run. We arrived from the UK to get on a connecting flight. We thought 2.5 hrs would be plenty of time but we were stuck in the immigration queue for over 2 hours then we had to queue for another hour for security so suffice to say we missed our flight along with nearly everyone else in the line. We had to wait 38hrs for another flight. Totally unacceptable.

What a horrible airport. Not to mention the rude people working Immigration and TSA! Will never use Dulles again. Coming in from Munich on Dec 14th at 3.30pm. Entering the most cramped and oxygen lacking immigration area long lines for US citizens only 3 officers on duty. No bathrooms in sight. At other airports I usually do get a: Welcome Home! But here I got questioned. Customs was smoother and then rechecking 2 bags. Then another long line for security screening. Then encountering the rude TSA personnel having been traveling for 27 hours at this point that kind of rudeness is unacceptable. Overall it took me 36 hours to get back home. Needless to say I have never felt more "Welcome to the United States!"

One of the worst airports (if not the worst) in the western hemisphere. They need to re-evaluate their treatment of all passengers arriving to the airport. They need to be more effective in handling passengers that have connection flights. The day I was there most off them lost their connection flights. I will try in the future to not visit that Airport.

Surely one of the worst airports in the world in which to transfer international to domestic. On December 18 2013 it appeared that every flight from Europe had arrived within minutes of each other and the minuscule poorly designed passport control area was mobbed with at least 400-500 people being processed by no more than 8 inspectors. (I would like to point out an error in other reviews that passport inspection is done by DHS-CBP not TSA). It took me 70 minutes to get through passport control. Then I ran into dreadfully under-staffed security check that took another 60 minutes - a total waste of time since we had been in a secure area since deplaning. By this time my connecting flight had long since departed and I was lucky to get on the next one 5 hours later; many others were stuck there overnight. If you are arriving internationally avoid this airport at all costs.

After over 200 flights into the US in the last years this was my first transatlantic flight into Dulles and I hope it will be my last as well. The plane was parked somewhere on the tarmac and we were transported to the international arrival section by these "people movers". Older folks may remember them boxy shaky things that got out of style with the Carter administration. They squeezed more people into this thing than they do in the Tokyo subway. Extremely uncomfortable. Immigration looked ok about 150 people waiting with six counters open but then they closed four of them. Took me 1 1/2 hrs. to get through. There were planes constantly arriving but immigration was in weekend mode. I was coming in late I guess if you arrive during rush hour you need about a week to clear immigration there. Luggage was waiting (no surprise) long walk to the hotel shuttle pick up. Departure next day dull endless terminal buildings without any moving sidewalks. One of the worst airports I have ever encountered.

Immigration manpower was extremely poor on arrival at Washington Dulles on Thur 24 Oct. There were 2 officers serving approximately 100 couples on the foreign arrivals. It took well over 90 minutes to even get to the front of the queue and after an 8 hour flight I feel this was totally unacceptable. I have been travelling here for over 12 years and trust me if it wasn't for the fact that I have to use this airport to visit relatives I would avoid it like the plague. There appears to be no visible management on the ground so that they could monitor the situation and perhaps get extra staff on to speed us through. You can spend millions of dollars of improving the infrastructure but if you don't have the staff to do something as simple as manage immigration then people are not going to have a positive view of their initial arrival to the USA.

I arrived during the shutdown so maybe there were less people flying into IAD but I was through in less than half an hour. The TSA staff were all really nice and friendly and even offered some advice on alternatives to the museums which were closed.

United announced on the plane where we had to go - great. Signage and helpful personnel at gate. Arrival holding pen - disgraceful and dangerous. Lack of manpower at TSA screening booths - pathetic and shameful. Having escalators delivering endless lines of passengers (including the elderly and infirm) into a confined space with limited egress seems to be a recipe for disaster. On our flight an elderly passenger had trouble clearing the end of the escalator almost causing a mishap. You would thing the arrival point of many foreign visitors into the country would be a place you would want to make welcoming and demonstrate friendliness and efficiency particularly at the nations capital. However most people around me were vowing not to use this airport again if they could avoid it. The long hike to a transfer in the "same" terminal and lack of concessions (terminal C gate 22) pale in significance to the TSA fiasco.
