"looks like a bus station"

(Germany)

Tehran Merhabad is the old main airport of Tehran. Easy access from city center. Before security check there are plenty shops and restaurants, after security check the choice is lower. Long queue and chaotic scenes at check in, also at first security check before entering the airport. Second security check was taken a bit easy, they not even use hand held dedectors. No wifi available, smoking rooms after security check available. Waiting area after security looks like a bus station.

Tehran Mehrabad Airport customer review

(Jordan)

Very modern newly built structure with passport control relatively smooth (I expected tighter go-through experience). If you think of your immigration check at JFK going through passport check at IKA is a walk in the park. I had carryon luggage so I rushed through exit with one more X Ray control to go. Nothing major but of course avoid to bring in alcohol. Departure was early in the morning. Very congested security check before you check in: you have to squeeze all your luggage and metal stuff under the x ray and then your physical check is very slow. If you fly economy not much to do in the airport. Couple of good coffee shops with plenty of tables and seats few duty free shops. There is one nice handicraft shop tough. Careful about public announcements that are delayed. Flights were announced departing when I had seen them happily taking off 10-15 minutes earlier. Smoking area is below the main floor with very nice view of the apron. No internet available in the public space. Once you move to your departing gate there is another security control. The boarding area is okay with nice reclined seats overlooking the runway and one small coffee shop. Overall a nice airport with huge room for improvement given the beautiful building and the fair share of international traffic.

Tehran Mehrabad Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Departing on 8am flight to Kerman. All bags X-ray'd before you enter the terminal. There was one queue for my flight and only one person checking everyone in but she was fantastically efficient and once at the head of the queue the process must have taken only 30 seconds. Amazingly people behind me were thrusting their tickets at her whilst she was dealing with me. Airside departure lounge was full and despite a lot of seats very few free. There seemed to be about 6 flight leaving at the same time as mine. The lounge reminded me of a 1970's bus depot. Plenty of shops around to get souvenirs and snacks although I didn't use them. It is a small affair and all gates are in the one area. Toilets were grim with long queues. Go before you arrive! Flight information screens toggled between English and farsi but the English version stayed on screen about 5% of the time. It seemed I was the only European person there. Suddenly the screen above the departure door flashed up for my flight. Bus to the plane for an on time departure. On the return journey bus journey back to the terminal and baggage re- claim was very fast. I was out of the airport within 20 minutes of landing. Some taxi offices in the arrivals building. Overall Mehrabad is a place to catch a domestic flight no more no less. A long delay would be a nightmare here. The transfer to the international airport is about an hour through heavy Tehran traffic.

Although the computer information screens are in Farsi and English I would advise completely disregarding the English information. Flying from Terminal 2 to Esfahan on Iran Air the computer screens read "Delay without estimate" next to my flight. An hour after the scheduled departure time this suddenly switched to "boarding". When I enquired I was told I was too late to check in. By this point the info screens were showing "Await further information" on my - now departing - flight. Moral of the story? Ignore the screens and be at a check in desk - any check in desk - an hour before your flight is leaving and stay there until someone gives you a boarding card. Don't take no for an answer and don't ask the airport info desk - they're nice but clueless - speak with the airline. Airport itself is fine but frequently descends into chaos that only a minimal amount of planning or thought would avoid. You quite often see hordes of staff racing around and shouting trying to resolve a confused multi- flight boarding situation when it would have taken just one of them to head off the problem with clear directions half an hour earlier. Would strongly recommend arranging for your hotel to send a car to pick you up on arrival. It is not possible to figure out how the airport taxi system works without practice - and often its the last thing you need when you've just landed. Taxi touts (attempting to charge a 150% markup on the maxmimum rate) are common. Ensure a fare at the start and don't let him drive off until you're satisfied.

Tehran Mehrabad Airport customer review

Mehrabad airport is an old and small airport that shows its age. The tarmac is worn out and inside terminal 2 is very dark and boring . Duty free shops are expensive and there's not a good eatery at the gates. Also I noticed security was taken easier than other airports given that I walked through the metal detector and it beeped but nobody apparently cared. I also noticed that their body search was very basic. On another occasion upon return I walked into the Homa class lounge without having proper authority and no one seemed to care. In the lounge although nice looking there was nothing special. All in all it's a tolerable airport but far from being a world class gateway. I am hoping to see the brand new airport opened in my next trip to Iran this summer.

Tehran Mehrabad Airport customer review

Tehran Mehrabad Airport is what you expect. Very basic very 70's and just not that great. It's not modern shopping facilities are limited and eating and drinking is minimal also it's very crowded at certain times (especially around midnight). I always wondered why Iran didn't put some money in airport improvements. Because as we all know an airport is the first and last thing visitors to the country usually see. It turns out that they didn't improve the airport because they were quietly building a super modern airport (Imam Khomeini International Airport) that will be fully operational in 2004.
