"unprofessional and unethical treatment"

(United States)

Trip Verified | I am a U.S. citizen who was departing Tashkent airport for NYC on October 15th 2023 at 6:45 am on HY101 flight. The customs lady started berating me for having a 1 kilo or 2 pounds over the limit for my checked baggage. When I offered to pay for the extra, she ignored my offer and kept berating me in Russian for not knowing customs rules. Then, she asked me to put my carry on on the weights and continued to berate me for having another 1 kilo over the limit for my carry-on. She finally let me go! Absolutely unprofessional and unethical treatment of foreign tourists! I will never go back!

"I might never be back"

(United States)

Trip Verified | This airport is really lame. When you arrive, you see throngs of people swarming the ticket counter with nobody outside the queue trying to control the crowd. You have to have your bags scanned on entry, at customs and at security. You also need to have a printed copy of your electronic visa to show passport control. Once behind security, there is only one shop, the duty-free shop. But that’s in name only. All the wine is twice as expensive as on the street. The conversion from Euros to USD is terrible, and it’s a must if paying by card. It’s best to try and push back and tell them how much it should be in USD using the current rate. Meanwhile, there is no business lounge for carriers besides HY, and there are no jet bridges, just old buses. There is no free Wi-Fi. Uzbekistan is trying to make a name for itself, but the departing experience is like something out of Midnight Express. I might never be back.

"security bordering on the obsessive"

(Uzbekistan)

Trip Verified | Strict levels of security bordering on the obsessive. Luggage is scanned twice. You are searched even if the metal detector does not go off as you pass through it. It is understandable. Beware of possible rip-offs at the Duty-Free Shop. They can give you the wrong conversions from euros to Uzbek sums if you want to pay in local currency.

"has become very efficient on the international side"

(United States)

Unverified | Tashkent Airport has become very efficient on the international side. Immigration and customs both on the way in and on departure were quite user friendly. Not a lot of shops and restaurants but that was not inconvenient. Readers should be aware that the domestic terminal is on the other side of the runway and it could take up to 30 minutes to connect from one side to the other side using a taxi.

"security is strict"

(Thailand)

Tashkent airport is one of the least welcoming ever but at least there are soviet-era aircraft to look at. When I arrived, There was just a walkway leading from the gate to the immigration, which took a while but was acceptable. Then there was security. It is like Ataturk airport, only more strict. Once you approach the terminal, you pass through a metal detector. Then once you enter the terminal, am etal detector. When Checking in, the attendant at the counter seemed to be too focused on the job at hand, he didn't really hear my requests up until I got my boarding pass. Then, departure security the staff yelled at me for not putting my wallet into the x-ray machine, since I thought that it was only carry-on baggage. After that, immigration. Another person travelling in our group took so long, when we asked why, he said "The officer just kept checking and checking and checking." Then departures was welcoming. And then the cobus to take us to the plane had no air conditioning, so it was scorching.

"security was struggling"

(India)

Date 15th Aug. Time 2000 hours. Flight 2250 hours. First state - The entry to airport is thru one small gate only. The security was struggling with 200-300 passengers at a time. No sun shade. It took 30 minutes to enter first stage. Second stage is on upper floor. No issue but only one gate. For Boeing wide bodied check in staff only 2. How can they manage 200 plus passengers. It took 40 minutes to get boarding pass as one check in staff closed the counter leaving a long queue for the only one checkin staff. Third stage is customs, I have seen customs only during arrivals. But it is in Departure also at Tashkent. It took 30 minutes. Fourth stage is Immigration. Counters are but staff is very slow. Took another 30 minutes. Fifth stage is security. Open shoes, take shoe cover. Took 20 minutes. At last we reached Gate B2 just 25 minutes before departure time.

Tashkent Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Departure was fairly easy and quick and there was an English guide for completing the customs form. You can only spend local money in the cafe or burger place but duty free only accepts dollars and euros. Escalator up to departures and not big inside but okay and clean. Arrival is very slow - so be patient. There is no queuing at passport control so I just took a seat on the side and waited until only a few people left and was much easier. At customs you need to complete two forms and I couldn't see an English guide (whereas there was one in departures) so ask a local or fill it in best as you can and customs officers will help with rest. There is a separate queue for tourists and they speak a little English make sure you keep the second copy as you will need it when you come to leave the country. Taxi ride into centre around 15000 Som i.e. $5 but you'll need to haggle a lot. Overall it's a fairly small airport and arrival does take a long time but it seems they are trying to improve things all the time.

Tashkent Airport customer review

(Australia)

Clean airport. Fairly good coffee and muffin place inside. The cafe takes Som or $US. Power for charging stuff in the cafe. Duty free a bit sad.3 separate security screenings but all fast enough. 60 minutes from kerbside to airline gate better than many "civilised" airports. Bags checked there arrived ok at destination on time after 3 flights. Take off 90 minutes late without explanation. The indicator board was never altered. The information desk had no better advice. Maybe the airport could insist airlines provide up to date information. The waiting masses were getting restless. One announcement was made in a language that may have been Korean but none of the Korean passengers could understand it. It was not English or Uzbek.

Tashkent Airport customer review

(United States)

Tashkent Airport can be difficult to navigate. Regulations are strictly enforced especially at departure. Upon arrival I noticed that the people do not observe lines and not speaking Uzbek or Russian can be a disadvantage. Make sure that you fill out and keep all official forms you receive! There is one for each hotel you stay in and there are matching customs forms for arrival and departure; you need to list valuables and cash and produce both forms when leaving the country. Departure gate is a floor below the departure area. There is now an escalator and carts are available for taking bags from the entrance gate to the escalator but only passengers may enter the departure gate. Good luck if you have more than one or two bags! There are no porters or at least not when I was there. I had forgotten about the customs forms after I had to repeatedly insist to the airline representative that I was allowed to check in more than one bag and the customs official said I could not take my money out of the country without submitting both forms. You will have to remove your shoes and socks and put on blue plastic booties before going through security. The airport personnel were courteous and even friendly but it was clear that no exceptions would be made.

Tashkent Airport customer review

(Vietnam)

Worst Airport ever. Our plane arrived in TAS at around 0345am from BKK the shuttle took us to the wrong building with what looked like a Transit building full of people lying on the floor. The people did not know what to do with us and we asked to be taken to the arrivals - a bus came in and took us to the right building. Got in the building - the Visa on Arrival person charged us more than what we should have paid for our visas (no receipts) and instead of the double entry which was on my LOI he put in single entry. I made him correct it. But he forgot to sign it which spelt trouble when I got back to Tashkent from Almaty. Nightmare did not stop there. 6 immigration booths in a 30 square meter area and with loads of people jostling around. Uzbeks don't know how to queue! Got pass it. And even when you are in the Green Zone everything should be declared including your iphone camera etc. This involves two back to back pages of customs declaration and 1.5 hours queue at the customs. Going out their Duty Free and even their own national airline do not accept their own currency.
