Southampton Airport customer review

Be prepared to be ripped-off if you decide to buy any food or drink at Southampton airport. Like all BAA airports the concept of providing a customer service is completely alien to the company owning the airport instead they treat it as a cash cow with the intention of extorting every penny from the passengers passing through. The seating area airside is woefully inadequate but this is because approximately 1/3 of the available area is taken up with a very expensive noisy and smelly World Shopping retail outlet which you have to walk through to reach the departure lounge. Mitchell's Bar upstairs (airside) is eye-wateringly expensive; £4+ for a watery pint of beer upwards of £5 for a glass of wine overpriced food and snacks etc - even a packet of crisps is around £1. This airport's only saving grace is it's convenience and proximity to the mainline railway. If you're flying from Southampton I recommend having a good meal and drink before you arrive - you won't be able to afford their prices when you get there.

Disgusted with security at Southampton. After travelling through 3 other airports without a hitch in the previous week (Glasgow Gatwick Heathrow) at Southampton 2 of my 3 children were given intimate full- body frisks - a 5 year old girl and 7 year old boy. My wife was forced to open all her small sealed bottles of baby milk and taste them rendering them useless. As for Flybe check-in lady I don't think I've ever come across such a miserable sour-faced person in a public-facing roll. After that experience not really interested in the facilities just wanted to get out as quickly as possible!

Flew back to Guernsey on the 7.50pm flight. Quick through security and went upstairs for a coffee. Just before 7 the coffee shop was closing and the only place for a drink was the bar which was heaving. Surely the authorities should insist these places stay open until at least 30 mins before the last plane departs. In the end I bought an overpriced soft drink and sandwich from WH Smith.

Flew to Edinburgh from Southampton Airport in September. It's very local to us so convenient but the growth in flights hasn't been matched by a growth in facilities. The airport will argue that it is investing and has enlarged the area of retail and catering space airside (which is true) but the queues into departures are now almost always longer than those I experience at Heathrow. This airport needs to speed up its investment if it wants to continue to grow and especially the airside space. Landside - the retail outlets are limited to one WH Smith which is really quite bad for an up-coming airport like Southampton. The other huge problem with this airport is its reliance on Flybe. Flybe operate an extensive network of routes to France and within the UK but has very few decent 'city break' destinations on offer so if you need to fly to places like Barcelona Rome Madrid Prague and Vienna you have to go to London. The airport can handle large aircraft (757s and 737s) so am not sure why it has failed to attract a competitor to Flybe which in my opinion is gradually whittling away all the competition it faces. An uncertain future I would say.

Not quite as good as my last visit in May but still an example to many other British regional airports. Staff are courteous and friendly and the place feels well managed and cared for. A few minor niggles this time again the time between the screen showing 'boarding' and a PA announcement calling for final boarding was very short indeed (3 mins - I am not exaggerating not enough time to walk from the coffee bar via the toilets). On return we had to wait on the aircraft as no buses were available (10 minutes) and the queue for immigration was also about 10 minutes (we were on the third of three aircraft arriving more or less together) however still far less than many other places I could mention. Finally the car park barrier did not recognise I had pre-booked but the problem was solved very quickly. It was a good experience.

This airport is always clean efficient and manned by staff who make eye contact. The food court is usually of excellent quality but I found on my last trip to Jersey that the white wine was warm and of very poor standard.

An excellent experience on departure and arrival. We parked in the short stay car park (only marginally more expensive than long stay) and from parking to sitting in the departure lounge was about 5 minutes (we had checked-in online). Security staff efficient and good humoured. My only complaint is that from the screens changing to 'Boarding' to our names being read out over the PA for 'immediate boarding' was about 2 minutes not even time to walk downstairs from the coffee bar. On return a walk from the aircraft to a short queue for immigration and straight out to the car park; less than 10 minutes from leaving the aircraft to exiting the car park. Very pleasant and a reminder of how air travel used to be.

An easy little airport to negotiate and with friendly staff. Good duty free shop with decent bargains in perfume and drinks. Viewing gallery in departure area. The only downside is the lack of variety of something to eat in the cafes especially if one is connecting flights and has a long interval..

EDI-SOU-EDI 25/29 Jan. The arrival in was OK not too long to wait and no distance to walk. Outwards was another matter: the airport is too small for the number of passengers it is now handling and the security queues were at about fifteen minutes which for mid-afternoon is too much. Concur with David Blowers' comments below. Flybe's checkin was OK.

Southampton Airport customer review

Southampton is a great little airport so much easier then LHR/LGW. From Portsmouth to the airport is just a 20 minute drive and with a 45 mins check in time it saves over 2 1/2 hours on the same trip. I was on the ground in Alicante before I would even have taken off from the London airports. You pay more for the flights and the queues at Flybe check in are a disgrace but otherwise very convenient. Very limited shopping opportunity's so other than a sandwich coffee and a paper forget it.
