Shenzhen Baoan Airport

✅ Trip Verified | A nice looking building and okay for domestic flights I have taken from here. However the international section is really poor and lacking facilities. No proper food and drink options, shopping is atrocious, and seating is quite cramped. Impossible to find charging points and seats offer no power. For a city such as Shenzhen I would have expected much better and certainly something that shows the hi-tech image of the city. WiFi is a joke and cannot be accessed unless you have Chinese mobile or find a wifi machine that are hidden away.

✅ Verified Review | Shenzhen is only my 4th Chinese airport but it is much nicer than Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong and Linyi. Although it is still not at Hong Kong's level either. It was a pleasure to see the epidemic of bland airport design that has gripped the world's airport in recent years, has not infected Shenzhen. Yet improvement is still needed for directional signage and in English speaking ground staff and the WiFi access (but that is a problem in all Chinese airports if one does not have a Chinese registered sim card it is impossible to get WiFi).

✅ Verified Review | I had a bad experience in Shenzhen airport after taking a flight from Tokyo via Incheon. The airport was large and there were a huge number of passengers from about 3 or 4 flights arriving at the same time. However, at the entry zone, there were only three opened gate which means I had to queue in a very long line. It took around 2 hours for finishing all procedure and go out of this airport. Moreover, airport staff only speak a little bit English and they did not help me for taking a train from airport to city center. Although I exchanged Chinese money, it could not use for buying train ticket because the automatic ticket machines only accept the smaller value money (which was so strange). When I asked staff, they could not answer in English and also did not help me anymore since I could not speak Chinese.

Arrived in transit from Sydney on the way to Amsterdam via Beijing with China Southern Airlines. On the way to Australia I traveled via Chengdu and Guangzhou with no problems. After a nine hour flight from Sydney we arrived in Shenzen expecting to sail through customs and relax before heading onto Beijing. How wrong could I be. Despite the China Southern staff at Sydney getting me to sign a transit visa (two hour turn around in Shenzen) all passengers going to Beijing were held in a "Holding area" with no drinks or smoking facility from when we landed. My hold luggage (that had been cleared in Sydney and I did not expect to see again until Amsterdam) was then presented to me and I had to open it to find a cigarette lighter was causing a problem? Ok sorted bags re loaded and then I was ushered through another security check and had to run the length of the airport (and it is no small airport) to catch my connecting flight despite arriving two hours earlier. Utter shambles and if I ever travel that way again Shenzen is on my "definite give it a miss list".

Brand new airport. On the positive side, for Chinese standards it certainly is well-designed and well-connected. Bright and clean check-in area. Good choice of restaurants and cafes both before and after security controls. As to the negatives: the security controls are quite inefficient and slow, the airline lounges are all quite poor and certain gates (from 30/35 upward) are very far (up to 20min walking).

Modern and clean airport. The transit is really strange (like you have to get into China and leave China again). Came from Beijing to Singapore via Shenzhen. Convenient airport, lot of shops (reasonable price airports), many eateries (Western, Chinese). Easy to find your way to the gate. Ground staff do not smile.

Excellent new terminal spacious and with lots of check-in counters. Flew China Southern to Nanjing and the check-in was swift as was security. All passengers get patted down regardless of whether you beep or not which was a bit of a nuisance. Beyond security good amenities and restaurants. We had an early morning departure and the terminal was very busy but it is definitely large enough to handle the number of people. One downside is we got a bus to the plane which took 20 minutes.

Beautiful terminal and concourses in the new terminal. Light and airy honestly the airport I would most enjoy waiting around in for a flight delay. Also good food and shops and a general uplifting feeling. Also the bus transit link back to Hong Kong was fast and efficient. Going through security screening was a bit of a line but the check procedure was quick enough.

The new terminal is amazing but the ground transport options are disjointed until the new direct train line is completed also there are few options for early morning departures. The communal areas are massive well lit and free flowing. Many shops allow for casual browsing. First Class Check In for Shenzhen Airlines was more like a 5 Star hotel in a segregated area.

Even though this airport is new it is terrible! Very long waiting lines at all levels. Security slow and no matter if you beep or don't beep you will be checked. Furthermore I really don't understand the "designers" of the airport runways. It needs just few drop of water and the runway is flooded causing long extremely long delays. Airlines staff cant give details about any delays and communication is poor. No regular updates. An airport to avoid.
