"Avoid transiting through this airport"

(Canada)

Trip Verified | Avoid transiting through this airport. The transit desk appears to keep banking hours and you will be forced to collect bags, pay for a trolley, and clear immigration. You can't go back through security If your flight is more than 2 hours away, even If you have a lounge pass. You bought duty free? Too bad. Airline staff seem uninformed. Airport staff are either uninformed or lie (pretty sure they lied, based on repeated experience with the same staff member) to make sure you leave the secure zone. Generally treated with an "I don't care, not my problem attitude from airport/customs employees.

"very well designed airport"

(Honduras)

Not Verified | This is a small new and very well designed airport. There is only one runway so there is never too much traffic. The business lounge is excellent, clean and there is always food and drink and the service is excellent.

"luggage was on the carousel within 15 minutes of landing"

(Australia)

Trip Verified | Earlier I reviewed here the disastrous departure with AA from MIA and it seems only fair that I should write about the excellent arrival procedures at Santo Domingo airport. On the short walk from the plane to the arrival booths there are some people randomly checking Covid documents. At the booth you need to show by phone or paper your electronic E ticket and then it is a breeze. When I arrived at the booth there were 8 officers on duty and the line was very short. The luggage was on the carousel within 15 minutes of landing and an official will check your bag tag with that on your luggage. Plenty of taxis, but a bit pricey and a great start to arriving in the DR.

"try to avoid it"

(Dominican Republic)

Trip Verified | I have been using the Las Americas Airport for more than 18 years and over recent years with much more trepidation. On my last departure, the Friday before Christmas, I arrived before 3pm for a flight to Madrid leaving at 5.20pm, travelling business class. After clearing security it took more than 70 minutes to get through the immigration people and at 4.15 I was called to go to the departure gate where I was escorted to the downstairs baggage area because I was told they wished to search my bag which was not locked. I could see my suitcase but no one wanted to sit down so I waited for more than 30 minutes and there I witnessed young security men opening cases and throwing items all over the table and floor. They opened Christmas presents of people flying to Europe, they opened cigarette packets and emptied the cigarettes on the table, they opened baby food and destroyed much, and laughed in the faces of the passengers. Finally I saw a terminal worker from my airline and asked her to try to get someone to inspect my case. A customs official came and found only clothes and wanted to know why my case needed to be inspected when it had gone through the x-ray machines as had all the other cases. I was the last person to board my flight and the flight attendants all told me of their dread of Santo Domingo airport, try to avoid it.

"Staff didn’t care"

(United States)

Not Verified | Drove here from Casa De Campo with some buddies returning from a golf trip. Myself and a friend walked through security holding our money in our hands. We were then questioned in a side room where they laid down the money on a table that was completely broken. A young security guard then took $100 from us and told us we were OK to proceed. Also there was about 50 people trying to fill out the customs card and the pens didn’t work. Staff didn’t care. We then had lunch as was told were not able to leave a tip on a credit card. Cash only tips they said. Felt very unsafe and abused by staff here. I hope I never have to go back. Place is a joke.

"it used to be so good"

(Dominican Republic)

Trip Verified | SDQ has become a nightmare for Dominican residents leaving. Now you need much more time as you are sent from one person to another to have the residency card photographed and then another person to have your ID checked and finally another person to stamp the passport. Worse for people who are paying the penalty charge for staying longer than a month. Once through, the lounges are basic in the extreme, duty free items, except some alcohol more expensive than the Santo Domingo stores and the process of loading passengers on board chaotic, it used to be so good but no longer.

"absolutely nothing was open"

(United Kingdom)

Arrived at night to Santo Domingo Airport and absolutely nothing was open. No shops, no bars, no food, nothing. For me, and the other hungry, tired people on the flight, this was awful. We had been on a flight for at least 11 hours with little food served on the plane, and then we landed in transit, and there was nothing we could get to eat or drink here either. Ok, it was night time, but many airports have places open at night as airports should function 24/7. The airport (especially the toilets) was filthy also. The staff were quite friendly, but they spoke no English whatsoever. And the signs were not very clear.

Santo Domingo Airport customer review

(United States)

Excellent both coming and going. Good selection of shops and restaurants. Layout easy to navigate. Well- signposted in both Spanish and English. Clean throughout. Ample restroom facilities. Best of all the passport/customs control personnel both "incoming" and "outgoing" are courteous efficient and multilingual. They smile - I hope they can give US officers the basic lesson 1: Corners of mouth go up not down.

Overall an excellent airport. Coming in and going out immigration was fast efficient and friendly. The airport is very clean and well-laid out for its size and does not feel crowded at all. Decent choice of shops and places to eat.

Santo Domingo Airport customer review

(United States)

The Americas International Airport is one of the best airports I have visited! For being the main airport of a Caribbean nation it is well kept. Air conditioning works throughout all terminals bathroom are clean many options for food and drinking. The immigration process is not bad at all. Everything is done quickly. The airport is well decorated and modern. Duty free shops are available as well as currency exchange. Military presence can be significant. Is a small and efficient airport with no huge terminal where u have to walk endlessly to reach your gate!
