"airport was very well-run"

(United States)

Not Verified | This airport was very well-run when me and my family were here. We were going to Punta Cana for a family vacation through jetBlue. We were able to get through security smoothly and the customs and shuttles were fast! The food court provided a wide variety of foods for me and my family to choose from, and everything was very modern. The bathrooms were clean enough for usage. The only con about this airport was the lack of the jet bridge. It didn't help that it was raining upon our leaving Punta Cana. We experienced torrential downpour and had to quickly get onboard, and we were drenched by the time we were on the plane. But, there were also many good things about this airport and I would not mind visiting it again!

"I've known nothing like it"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Hundreds waiting in one large room after a 9 hour flight. Immigration asking stupid questions like "why are you here' and "what's the purpose of your visit'. We were lined up on the tarmac whilst dogs individually sniffed us. Absolutely ridiculous. On leaving, I think we went through 5 or 6 Passport checks and an x-Ray. I've known nothing like it but, Mexico comes close.

"check-in process took well over 2 hours"

(Canada)

Trip Verified | We were departing Punta Cana on February 16, 2023 after a 7 day vacation at a resort in Punta Cana. We had a very bad experience during check-in for the following reasons: The AT check-in counter the clerk did not seem to know how to check-in. She needed her manager's assistance and did not speak very basic English. Her manager knew a little better English and when I reached out to him, he was rude. My wife was in a wheelchair and there was no consideration for expediting her check-in. The check-in agent did not seem to differentiate between normal person check-in and a disability person check-in. Although we reached the airport 3 hours before departure the check-in process took well over 2 hours leaving no time to charge my wife's portable oxygen concentrator. Air Transat services at Punta Cana airport needs improvements which is well under Air Transat's jurisdiction. Air Transat needs to ensure that the check-in personnel have better basic English competency. Due to the ordeal we went through we do not plan to use Air Transat services to Punta Cana in future. Please consider the above feedback so other future travellers do not have to go through the frustrations we experienced.

"worst experience of an airport"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | The worst experience of an airport I have ever had. Arrived two hours before a flight to JFK. Informed at check in queue that the desk was about to close (not true). Asked for COVID certificate - not a problem, it was on my phone. The WiFi in the airport was so poor it took me 15 minutes to login to the app to get the certificate. Next we were asked for our immigration certificate. The one I had completed was inbound only, even though it asks for your departure date, and we needed to complete a new one. The same problem with WiFi - my phone couldn't connect using WiFi to the internet to fill in the form. Neither at this point could my wifes. The lady from ServisAir behind the counter very kindly did it for us. We've now wasted 25 minutes due to poor WiFi coverage in the airport. Went to first line - about 100 metres long to have only our passport and boarding pass checked (not immigration, just a couple of airport officials). Was sent through a barrier to the left and had our passports and boarding passes taken from us - no explanation. We figured out we needed to head after our boarding passes and passports so got in line for the x-ray machine that had no trays. My wife went to find trays whilst I held the line. Through x-ray, had to ask an official where our passports were and was told we needed to get in another line - about 12 people in front of us. Two more airport officials were checking bags, unpacking clothes and swabbing for trace explosive elements. The line moved slowly (35 mins to take off) with one person working at the slowest possible speed whilst his colleague wrote down on paper the outcome of each bag check - welcome to the 1950s. When we eventually got the front, after my wife complaining to three different officials we would miss our flight, they simply logged our passports on the piece of paper, stamped our boarding passes with a blue 'e', and waved us on (No checks undertaken). I should add at this point that whilst in the line we had both been sniffed by a sniffer dog - presumably for drugs / explosives. We got ourselves fast tracked through the next line at immigration by showing our boarding passes and then ran all the way to the gate. The gate was closing and we made it with about 3-4 minutes to spare. We were then sniffed again by a second, different, sniffer dog. Onboard there were about 6 people behind us so close to being last on. Our connection at JFK was a dream compared to this place. i genuinely think it has put us off going back.

"I have always found a seat"

(Dominican Republic)

Trip Verified | My home airport, thus I use it a few times a year. Check in has been as easy as anywhere else I have flown with similar wait times. Terminal A can get busy mid-day, but I have always found a seat. I never expect in any airport to find food and drink at bargain prices, thus not shocked. I see some talk of $6.00 coffee. I had a coffee for 150 pesos which is under $3.00. As a resident, I can bypass the hoards that arrive mid-day when entering the country. There is a lane set up for residents and citizens to the right of the concourse. I always feel a little guilty but, hey, I am a resident! Best try to get flights that do not arrive between 1-4pm. The baggage handler I had assist was obviously in cahoots with the customs official who tried to intimidate a "propina" out of me. He told me to leave it with the baggage guy. I left him nothing. The airport does need more capacity to process those arriving, or perhaps an automated system that is often found these days.

"Staff seem more preoccupied with talking amongst themselves"

(United States)

Not Verified | People that work here seem more preoccupied with talking amongst themselves than paying attention to customers. Although immigration has improved its processing of passengers, there are still quirks. Security procedures here are not lined up with US guidelines, they took a pair of nose hair trimming scissors from me that had a round tip and not even 1/2 in blade. Just absurd. Shops are expensive. 6 dollars for coffee from an automatic machine seems excessive.

"This airport is just a joke"

(Belgium)

Not Verified | This airport is just a joke. Queue for hours. Too small. Not enough seats. Worst business lounge ever. Disorganization at gates. Wifi very slow. Third world airport.

"definitely a 3rd World airport"

(United States)

Not Verified | One would think that after 50 years PUJ would figure out how to operate an airport. Whoever runs the place has no clue with respect to airport operations or management. It is definitely a 3rd World airport. Customs and Immigration is ridiculous and laborious. Staff are extremely rude given it's a tourist airport. The departure lounge has maybe 200 seats for 5,000 travelers and 1 restroom. The worst part is the PA system won't tell you when aircraft are boarding until the last call. By then, you are scrambling to get to the plane. Check-in counters are open-air with no a/c. They think their thatched roof and open-air are cute but we want a/c when we get to the airport on 90 degree days. We've had enough sun and heat and don't want to sweat all the way to the plane. The coup de gras is some idiot thought it was a good idea to put a pool by the departure lounge so you can swim while waiting for your plane. Good news though. There will be a new airport in Bavaro to compete with PUJ. Should go a long way to put PUJ out of business. The new airport investors seem to know what they are doing and how to run a good airport. We will see. My advice is to fly in to Santo Domingo and get transportation to Punta Cana and avoid the hassles.

"it gets worse rather than better"

(United States)

Not Verified | This does not improve. I fly to PUJ every couple of months and each time it gets worse rather than better. The customs line is insanely long and slow. Be ready to waste at least 3-4 hours standing there, moving at a snails pace, in a hot, overcrowded room, no food, no drinks, no bathrooms, just stuck with thousands of others. And, once you get through and get your bags, you have to re-screen your bags before exiting to transportation. Beware! You will spend most of your first day on this beautiful island, standing in a line.

"customs at Punta Cana is the worst"

(Canada)

Not Verified | I have been to dozens of major airports in the past few years. The customs at Punta Cana is the worst. About three hours spent snaking through a long line in a crowded open hall with a thousand other people. We typically go to Punta Cana every few years but will not return until they fix this. What a horrible impression for visitors. On the positive side leaving was easy, lines move quick and the waiting areas were fine.
