Newark Airport customer review

This airport is an example of how to make air travel miserable! After traveling through 6 different airports on our vacation Newark is the worst I witnessed. From the general condition of the facility (shabby and dirty) to the poor layout of the facility I will avoid Newark as a gateway in future travel. Upon arrival we were forced to carry our luggage through the airport attempting to find the skytrain to get our hotel transportation. After an exhausting walk through the airport we finally got to the sky train only to wait for 2 trains because the cars are so small. Then we got dumped outside in the heat and humidity to wait 30 minutes for a hotel bus. This airport should avoided at all costs!

If you can make a choice you should avoid transferring flight in Newark EWR or New York JFK at all cost. The line at immigration at EWR was very long they do not care how long the line is they just take their time and will not take any steps to ease the line. You are not able to transfer flight inside the security area. You will need to walk outside and clear with the TSA. The TSA personnel are lazy and slow.

We have travelled through many airports but have never encountered the consistently horrible experiences that we've encountered with Newark Liberty Airport. We've been bounced from gate to gate and terminal to terminal not to mention the consistent delays. I believe I would rather fly to several extra airports just to avoid Newark. Beware travellers.

I have flown in and out of Newark's Liberty Airport several times. There is nothing spectacular about the airport facilities. Dining options in Terminal C were limited if you were delayed. The line for security was long but moved. Arriving I found virtually no line at passport control and my bags arrived quickly. The most redeeming factor for Liberty Airport is its easy rail access. That is a valuable asset for any major airport.

I have spent a significant chunk of my life in airports. I was horrified at the cleanliness and facilities at this dump. I am in C Terminal along with several thousand other people. My first stop after a long flight was the restroom. The lines were incredibly long and an employee informed me there were only two bathrooms for the whole terminal each having three urinals/commodes. When I finally got in the filth was terrible.

I was given wheelchair assistance at the airport. Usually the people employed for this job are very competent and courteous. Not at Newark airport this time. The lady in charge was in a terrible mood bumped me against a wall once did not seem to have any idea where luggage could be claimed or where to find the hotel shuttles and in the end rushed us my wife and myself into the wrong shuttle van. A most unpleasant experience unexpected in this country.

Flew in on LH and left 2 days later on Swiss. Coming in I must have been quite lucky because both immigration as well as baggage collection were quite fast - it wasn't a busy time of day and getting out of the building and into the cab is a matter of 2 minutes once you're out of security area. Personnel wasn't particular friendly but nothing to complain about. Flying out I was lucky again as it was not a busy time but that was about the only upside. As one other reviewer already wrote: don't arrive on an empty stomach. Next to this advise one clear warning: avoid the Duty Free shops! The price tags at least on cosmetics are hefty. I had 4 people in front of me at security and it took about 20 minutes. I don't want to think about what it would be like if it had been a regular hour or even a busy day. The airport itself has some structural drawbacks and on top of that seems to be very poorly maintained. I don't fly to NYC often but I'll definitely try to avoid EWR next time.

Never flown into Newark from overseas - and never will again. Horrible airport. Immigration lines were huge but as I am Global Entry it took 30 seconds. Baggage reclaim took 40 minutes and the line to go past customs was an hour long easily 1000 people in line. Confusion frustration - many people had connections and no one cared to expedite things. TSA security was 2 lanes for 1000 people crammed into United's Premier and Standard passenger lines. Chaotic and just a mess - once through many restaurant choices but I just wanted to get to my gate. Worse than LAX or MIA.

During Saturday evening only 4 of 60 available immigration booths were occupied and there were the long queues described so often here. After spending just "moderate" 90 minutes in the queue for non U.S. citizens the immigration officer screamed at my wife and me with no apparent reason and treated us in a insulting way. Only one of the 4 booths was open for U.S. citizens so there was no visible progress in their long queue during these 90 minutes. I could see hundreds of frustrated faces at once at this airport. The departure after our visit went much better in the late evening at Terminal B but could not compensate for the arrival experience: Trying to follow the partially missing signage I got lost immediately behind the entrance but apparently for compensation there were lots of support personnel placed in the entrance area which could be asked to show the way. This time security staff were quick and friendly. With an online check-in it took us only a couple of minutes to get to the gates. The shops after the security were quite disappointing for an international airport so we did not spend here many of our remaining cash-dollars.

Probably the worst airport in a first world country that we have ever experienced. There was a total culture of really lousy customer service right from the check in counter through security at the food services and out to the gate staff. It can only be explained by an attitude that starts out with upper management. Given that there are two other choices to fly into NY next trip will definitely not be into Newark.
