Newark Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Dreadful experience - customs and immigration was overloaded no automated machines for passport scanning. Three international flights worth of passengers then had to queue to hand in the customs declaration - not surprisingly I missed my connection. Had to change terminals - no clear signage and lousy facilities at the domestic terminals. Avoid like the plague.

Avoid this airport at all costs. I flew recently internationally through Newark and it was horrible. The airport is overcrowded and seems to be in a constant state of chaos. Customs is unbelievably bad - long wait and staff are rude. I was in a great hurry since I had a connection flight. Everything seems to be broken or in shabby condition the whole airport just inspires the desire to leave. Avoid at all costs.

Avoid this airport at all costs. I flew twice internationally through Newark and both times were horrible. The airport is overcrowded and seems to be in a constant state of chaos. It was particularly irritating to sit waiting in the terminal and to have to hear general announcements over the PA system every thirty seconds. Customs is unbelievably bad - it seems that you have to walk a mile just to get from the plane to the customs area and then you have to wait forever for the arrogant and rude customs agents. Everything seems to be broken or in shabby conditions the whole airport just inspires the desire to leave but of course it also has one of the worst on- time records of any airport in the US.

Newark Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Worst airport ever! After a long flight from London we had to queue 2 hours to get through passport control there was insufficient staff to handle the volume of passengers. After 2 hours to get our passports checked we had missed our connecting flight to Latin America. The airline flew us from Newark to Houston we had to pay $280 for a hotel overnight as airport booked and got a morning flight. With extra cab fares and hotel $300 out of pocket tired after 3 flights to get from London to Panama City and a day lost- all because Newark can't get organised. Note to United Airlines I would get out of Newark as a hub. I won't fly via that airport again staff are unhelpful it has an air of chaos and a insufficient staff. No wifi to communicate delay had to go to Starbucks. Steer clear of Newark especially if connecting to another flight!

We landed here from UK following a 3 hour flight delay. The staff were rude and disinterested being told not to stop and keep moving like cattle being led to slaughter but in particular the horrible immigration control officer checking our passports. He was slumped back in the chair and 'arrogant' is too soft a word to describe his attitude. There was no greeting - he mumbled '4 fingers right hand' meaning you had to put your fingers onto the scanner then took a photo without requesting you look at the camera - assuming you were expected to know to do this. When my husband drew his attention to the mission statement on the front of the kiosk to his right which quoted you would be 'cordially greeted into the country' he was not aware of its presence. On going round to check it his retort was in essence if we expected pleasantries we should have used that kiosk instead - absolutely disgraceful and not an endearing first experience of America. On showing our immigration card at the next desk what a surprise we were pulled for security checking - our penance perhaps for speaking out at the previous kiosk. On leaving the area there was no signage displaying where to go so we were yelled at by another rude man who clearly felt that even having never been to the airport previously we should have had knowledge of it's layout. If NYC expects tourists to adhere to their tipping policy which is required to be factored into your spending money then a better level of greeting into the country in the first instance would go a long way to ensuring this. The return journey was not as bad with security staff being quite humorous and the staff at check in were quite helpful after the baggage self check in scanner failed to print off all our luggage labels or boarding cards. Would probably travel to this airport again if needed to having experienced it once and being prepared as to what to expect just not a very pleasant first experience.

This is an awful airport. The workers on the ground are disinterested in helping travelers. The TSA agents are useless and rude. The airport itself has horrible signage and difficult to navigate unless you have been here before. The bathrooms are dirty beyond belief especially for a major hub. The fixtures are in need of overhaul. I came in from Calgary and the first thing I saw getting off the plane was some nasty stains over the wall and carpet and half of the seat having rips and tears in them. Welcome to NJ!

I arrived at terminal A with no idea where I was or how I was going to get to another terminal to catch my connecting flight. I looked but was unable to find an Information Center or Directional Signs so I stopped members of a flight crew walking by who pointed out the elevator I needed to take to get to a bus which would get me where I needed to be. When we arrived at the correct terminal located in an industrial-looking area the driver instructed me to walk up a metal staircase. At the top of the stairs sat an employee of my airline. I showed him my boarding pass he told me the gate number had been changed and I set off to find my way there. Upon arrival at the new gate I was surprised to see no airline employees at the desk and no other passengers waiting. Ten minutes before my connecting flight was to leave I walked across the terminal again showed my boarding pass only to be told the gate had been changed again. The employee berated me for not listening to the announcements which I don't remember hearing then showed me how I could quickly get to the correct gate. When I asked why the electronic sign for my airline did not show the third gate change I was told the City of Newark is responsible for those signs not the airport or the airline. Horrible experience! I will never fly there again!

I've travelled business class all over the world for business and leisure and Newark is by far the worst travelling experience I have had. Checking in and being directed to the economy queue (despite showing the uninterested services persons pass clearly showing it was business class I waited for 30 minutes to get through security rendering me late to dial into a meeting for work. The reason I travel business is that I am a busy person and speedily moving through security is a necessity. The lounge is crowded not clean and does not have the usual amenities that I would expect from a business class lounge. I can't stress heavily enough that people should not travel through Newark if it can be avoided.

This was the worst experience in 40 years of air travel. Three wide body jets landed within minutes of each other. All were directed to three baggage carousels in the same room. That is around a thousand people. There were 2 customs agents to check the customs forms for this group. It took over an hour to get through two disinterested slobs who would not even make eye contact! Three other customs agents were standing around having a conversation while people were yelling that they would miss connections. They ignored the passengers and left one airport worker to try and form an orderly line which was an impossible task. They just laughed among themselves. I ended up stranded in the airport for hours because United had a computer outage and cancelled my flight 6 hours before the departure and arbitrarily booked me on a flight for the following day that would have taken me on a tour of domestic airports that was longer than the transatlantic flight I had arrived on and I was only going to Savannah GA! I had three small beers and a salad in a Mexican restaurant for $46! Customer service by United was beyond abysmal. Two service agents in the lost baggage dept to sort out all the people who were stranded due to missed connections and the normal lost baggage passengers. The Immigration and Customs people need a lesson in work ethic and manners. They just looked bored and disinterested. If they are the first thing tourists see of the United States of America they wont be coming back.

This was the worst experience in an airport. It took us more than an hour at passport control. The staff were yelling at people there were not enough agents checking passports lines moved very slowly. They explained that many United Airlines flights had landed at the same time. Why couldn't they have more agents in place knowing they will have more people? It was a big mess. Very disappointing.
