Newark Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Has to be the worst airport I have travelled through. No security checks in baggage clothing no metal detectors absolutely anything could of been taken on our flight to Birmingham UK. There are about 6 duty free shops 4 of which of full of cheap market imitation souvenirs. No brand named shops I guess they don't want to be associated with the place. The so called food hall that must cost a fortune in heating bills as it was permanently on the highest heat setting. A restaurant with no clean glasses customer service with the most miserable attitudes from 99% of people who work there. Toilets never cleaned dirty disgusting environment to be in. No free wi-Fi to connect to. How this airport operates is beyond belief I shall not use it again.

The employees at security were very rude. If someone asked a question they remarked in a way as if they were disgusted or made a snide remark. I accidentally left a bottle of water in my bag and it seemed like the biggest deal. It was a mistake and I even said that. His response was "well if everyone made mistakes we'd be here all day". I understand they have a job to do and it needs to be done efficiently but there is no place for rudeness and attitude. There is a lot to be said for treating someone with dignity and respect and that is not what I saw today.

I fly all the time for work and unfortunately have to connect through this miserable excuse for an airport quite frequently. Out of all the times I've flown from EWR to BOS my flight has not once left on time. On average the flights I've taken are about an hour behind.

I use EWR frequently having flown over 2 million miles on United alone out of this airport in the past decade. I use this airport weekly. Over this period the airport has improved in many ways so that it has become the best airport serving New York better than LaGuardia and JFK. Access food service and ambience have been improving. However in the past six months it has declined significantly. In particular the recent switch to a single company providing all the food services has resulted in a decline in quality and an exorbitant increase in price of food. I am sitting in the Food Court in Terminal C. I just purchased a "Bovine & Swine" hamburger an Onion Ring and 1 fresh orange juice for $19.21 from "Make Your Own Hamburger". MacDonald's provided hamburgers at half the cost of this place. There use to be a Balducci's which made superb New York sandwiches. Now there are places that are more expensive and less good. The service is at best mediocre and occasionally insolent. It is sad that the airport has rented all its food vending space to a single company who can jack up the price on captive audience.

First and last time flying into Newark from abroad. In more than 30 years of flying into U.S. airports I have never had to wait more than eight minutes at Immigration. The wait here was one hour and 10 minutes for U.S. citizens and more than two hours for foreigners. Out of 26 counters for U.S. citizens three or four were staffed (depending on breaks). The entire time we were subjected to ads on TV screens encouraging us to pay $100 to avoid these lines. This is beyond outrageous. The amount I pay in income tax should entitle me to decent service - I should not have to pay extra for it. As a consequence of this totally unreasonable and unanticipated wait I missed my connecting flights (despite on paper a connecting time of more than two hours!). In the future I will do everything possible to avoid this airport.

This has got to be one of the worst immigration experiences ever. After a long flight from Europe the line for immigrations was 2 (two) hours. About 4 booths were open and the rest were closed. What is this? A third world country? I fly to EWR quite often both for pleasure and business and the immigration process is poor every time. This is far worse than any other US airport I have used.

I was on a flight at 21.20 with BA to Heathrow from terminal B. The terminal was quiet with no queues at check-in or security. The terminal was calm and nicely designed much less chaotic than JFK. The facilities air-side aren't fantastic but I've noticed that American airports in general aren't good at that. Plenty of places to charge your phone or iPad but as others have noted no wifi which is a pity. Transport from Manhattan to the airport is easy efficient and fast the only downside being the gruesome Penn Station. Overall I had a very happy experience here!

Arrived from the UK and found the experience through immigration and baggage claim so simple - landed and being collected outside within 50mins. Return trip less straightforward. Security lines were long and in the confusion I mislaid my laptop. Waiting area for planes rather limited in seating and facilities. But would use it rather than JFK for easy of access and quick immigration on arrival.

If I could rate this airport a 0 I would! There were a number of problems here: luggage taking 25 minutes to be released from an international flight when so many people had connecting flights about to leave only 2 security lines open after 4 international flights just landed and over half those people trying to go back through security to catch a domestic flight. The absolute worst experience was due to a police office/security guard. As I was heading to the immigration line after securing my luggage I decided to head further up the side of the line to say goodbye to my friends that had already been in the massive line for awhile. As I started calling out to them the officer started yelling at me that I had no right to cut the line. I tried to explain to him that I wasn't cutting the line I was just trying to say goodbye. (In fact I have global entry so there is a separate much quicker line for me to enter through immigration.) He continued to engage with me and loudly yell that I have no right to cut people that have been in line the entire time. I kept trying to explain to him that I was not cutting and that I was trying to say goodbye but he would not listen in fact he kept cutting me off and loudly shouting at me. I eventually decided to just stop engaging with him but he I was so shocked at how he was trying to make a scene and wouldn't listen to anything I had to say. If this is how officers help you in the Newark airport I'd much rather fly through a different airport - in fact I will avoid this airport as much as I can in the future.

I had to catch a connecting flight in Newark travelling back from Canada. After we went through customs we were at the security checkpoint and there was only one person checking bags and one looking through the screening machine for TSA. They were the rudest people I have encountered any airport. It was taking so long and people were upset because they were going to miss connectors. They were making rude comments and screaming at passengers that they didn't care it was our problem and if we had beverages in our bag it would take even longer. they even screamed at a man who clearly did not understand English. I did miss my connector as I'm sure did many others. It took an hour to go through this process. I will be sure to avoid the New Jersey airport and surely will not spend any money in their airport. They should be reprimanded for their behavior.
