"boarding area is depressing"

(Canada)

Not only is it the most run-down airport I've been to, but it seems also to be the most dysfunctional. I can understand their logic in saving costs by requiring you to transfer your own luggage by yourself, but finding your way to the train to go to another terminal let alone getting the luggage on and off the elevators is a nightmare in itself, not to mention you have to take an elevator down to the concourse from the train, then walk to the end of the check in hall to then take an elevator that saves you carrying all of your baggage/hand luggage up 8 steps just shows how outdated the airport is besides the appearance. Getting past security to go to the gates is like trying to fit 200 people through a hallway barely 2.5 meters wide. The boarding area is depressing and the leather seats are old and some are even split all the way across. I thought CDG Terminals 2C and D were bad. I'd gladly take a transfer there than at Newark. The one positive note is that the airport staff are mostly very high spirited and they try to accommodate and help everyone as much as they can.

"I will avoid Newark at all costs"

(United Kingdom)

Never again. Thankfully I did immigration preclearance at Toronto Pearson or I'd never have made my flight. We landed late as Air Canada had delayed take off to wait for missing passengers and by the time we taxied to the gate I had 45 minutes to change terminals and go back through security. I landed in terminal A and had to get to terminal C. No signage on landing as to how to do this so had to ask some uniformed people for directions. The sky train was delayed to start with and very slow. Eventually got to TC and was faced with a boarding pass queue check of monumental proportions. I spoke to a helpful TSA lady who allowed me to join the priority queue then encouraged me to skip through it-if any of the people I encountered in that queue are reading this, thank you. I found the TSA and CBP staff (that one lady aside) to be rude and unhelpful. It's not really surprising, I think if I worked in that environment I would find it wholly demoralizing. After a lengthy walk through the terminal I found my gate and made my flight. 30 mins of free WiFi is rubbish. This is such a horrible airport that free unlimited WiFi should be provided to help with customer satisfaction. Ordered a burger which was dried out and cold but I was famished so it did the job. Next time I travel to Canada or any other part of North America I will avoid Newark at all costs.

"terminal itself once there was poor"

(United Kingdom)

Really unimpressed with terminal C. Getting to the airport was easy and convenient. Used NJ transit and Airtrain. The terminal itself once there was poor. It's being upgraded granted but the elongated nature and lack of friendly seating was disappointing. Wanted to sit and chat with other half in a coffee shop. Instead there was a small food court with no seating left, the gate seats or stools with iPads at a restaurant to use. The only terminal maps we could find even after asking were on a screen that disappeared to advertising after 10 seconds for 30 seconds making it difficult. We had two other groups ask us for directions as they had no idea how to get to another terminal. Check in with United was quick and easy however. The one good point. Security wasn't great. Only one scanner open but 3 staff checking passports so crammed into small space behind them before scanner taking shoes etc off. Visited a few airports on this trip and Newark lacked in a few areas. Hopefully the renewed terminal will be better.

"Newark is just the worst"

(United States)

The screen by the shuttle listed the wrong departure terminal for our flight. It conflicted with our tickets so we asked an employee which terminal to go and they said trust the screen, so we did. In addition to being rude and unfriendly, none of the people who checked our boarding passes told us we were in fact at the wrong terminal. After getting through security and finding out our actual gate, we had to take the shuttle again all the way across the airport. Newark is just the worst.

"the shopping wasn't great"

(United Kingdom)

Security at Newark was very busy and it took us 45 minutes to get through. The shopping wasn't great and the duty free shop didn't have a large range of goods.

Slow connections / bad public service to. Broken security X-ray machine. Bad signage. Majority of restaurants operated by dreadful OTG Company that have lack of choice and card only policy - very restrictive.

Newark Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

At security, I did the usual thing of emptying metal objects from my pockets. After passing through the body scanner, I was shouted at in a very intimidating way by a security official for not emptying everything out of my pockets (I had some dollar bills, a comb and a handkerchief still in my pockets). I was shocked at this bullying attitude. I was unaware that I needed to empty absolutely everything out of my pockets and I apologized to the security official for this. I have never been treated so disgracefully. His intimidating attitude made me feel small and it ruined what was, up until then, a very nice holiday in New York. Is this the way Newark Liberty Airport treats its guests? When I return to New York, I will avoid this airport.

Newark Airport customer review

(United States)

For a while I was convinced I was passing through a third-world airport. Deplaned in Terminal A from my AA flight from Chicago, headed to Terminal B for my flight to LHR on BA. Arrived at the AirTrain station only to find the up escalator not functioning. Worst if all, no one was working to fix it. Interminable wait to board the single elevator which held only about a dozen people. Arrived at the train stop only to wait over ten minutes for the next train, when they are supposed to run every four minutes. Most poorly designed people mover I have ever seen. Narrow doors, one person at a time, people exit thru the same door thru which they boarded. Each car hold only about twelve people. Unbelievable waste of space, and extraordinarily inefficient. All this paled in comparison to the TSA experience. Twelve to fourteen employees working, only one line of passengers being processed, despite equipment for two lines. Horrendous line of passengers. Absolute incompetence. Fly through here at your own risk.

Never seen the airport clean. The restrooms are filthy. Unflushed toilets, toilet paper all over. If the airport authorities are going to promote this airport, better start with the restrooms. The seating areas are equally nasty - torn seats, litter and so on.

Newark Airport customer review

(United States)

We had two-hour layover between flights from Frankfurt, Germany to St Louis. Immigration took 1.5 hours and security check 30 mins and we missed the departure time. On the passport control, 30% of kiosks worked and the process was extremely slow. Why does Homeland Security do nothing to improve airport passport control and security.
