I find this airport chaotic with very few shops and places to eat. With only major currencies accepted namely Euro or USD (not even Swiss Franc) it was a turn-off for me to spend anything while transiting here. Having to wait for the bus to transport you from the aircraft to the main building this airport seems to live in the dinosaur age. While I find Oman Air a good airline to fly with I don't think I want to transit at this airport until the construction of the new wing is completed.

Small airport with enough amenities and food outlets to keep you occupied for a stopover. Duty free has a good selection and is competitive. We didn't have long in the airport on both journeys but found it to be clean and welcoming to passengers. Queues at customs (security) for transit minimal and organised exit from terminal to buses.

Was in transit from LHR to my trip to BKK. I had to spend 12 hours there but at least you can find some loungers to at least get some sleep. Terminal was slightly busy and had some shops to at keep you going for food and drink. They accepted UK Pounds as well. Nice places to eat. Overall it was bearable for a few hours stop over but my next trip to BKK via Muscat is minimal. At least I know where to go and steer clear.

Muscat airports actual main terminal is rather old fashioned and not really inviting. There are no jetties available all passengers are boarding via bus. Prices of food and beverages are high and payable in local currency only. Prices of duty free goods are unattractive. Flight and gate information is ok seating capacity is quite good. As there are no attractions in the airport avoid longer layovers or bring a good book. The situation may change for good once the new terminal building is available.

Has to be one of the best airports in the middle east. Although it does tend to get a bit crowded during the holidays it is a very comfortable airport. Convenient if you have a resident card since it lets you skip immigration queues. It takes me less than 5 minutes to leave the airport from the moment I set foot in the terminal on arrival. Although the lack of boarding gates is frustrating I guess its just a minor issue since the new terminal is coming up soon. Staff are very friendly efficient and make you feel at home. Check-in counters close an hour before departure so give yourself at least a couple of hours to check-in. I have not had a negative experience here and would be happy to fly through Muscat again!

I have used this airport a lot over the past few years and frankly the new terminal can't come quickly enough. It is often over crowded if you are leaving on a weekend trip away to Dubai for example. The car parks are always over-crowded and cars just seem to get parked anywhere whether it is in a space or not which is annoying when you need to get parked in a hurry. The bureaucracy gone mad event here was when the newly opened and fitted Irish Pub was opened but couldn't serve any alcohol because of a lack of a licence which took a year to rectify.

I arrived on a delayed flight from Kuala Lumpur into Muscat. The airport was a bit quiet in the afternoon. The process of visa on arrival was done within 5 minutes. I was impressed with the friendliness of both the immigration and custom officers. Things went smoothly and I was in the hotel more or less 50 minutes after my arrival time.

No air-bridges for any arrivals so buses to the terminal. Cabin crew and ground staff arranged for First and Business pax (about 12 in total) to go off on the first bus to get ahead of the game. Tip for anyone new to the airport as it is pretty confusing - go to the Travelex money exchange desk to buy your visa before approaching passport control. OR20 cash or you can pay by credit card. Taxis into Muscat hotels are a fixed price and you pay at a booth before getting in the taxi: OR5-OR10 for most hotels - much better than having to haggle. Return was very good although only pax are allowed into check-in area. Oman air lounge was good - fine selection of food and drinks. Good shopping area. Again a bus out to the aircraft but this did not detract from an airport that is trying really hard to catch up and doing a good job of that.

Nice little airport. Only ever used it for connections. But its a relaxing low stress environment compared to other Arabian peninsula hubs.

A nice efficient little airport - much smaller than others in the region until the new building is completed. A very important piece of information is that the check in counters close an hour before take-off and I mean really close - the systems all shut down and there is no way onto the flight. This stops the check in staff getting bullied by late comers but means you need to be there in good time. The immigration queue looks long but generally moves reasonably quickly - you need to buy your visa at the Travelex bureau before you join the queue if you don't have one already. It is now 20 OMR each but kids seem to be only 10 (though I wouldn't bet on it) and if you have a visa for some but not all of the GCC states it is free. You can get a multiple entry visa but that seems to be at the whim of the Colonel on duty. There is a reasonable small duty free on arrival just after immigration and before what is generally the worlds fastest ever baggage reclaim (unless you are unlucky or travelling on BA for some weird reason when there can be a wait). The only ground transportation option is taxis - if you go to the hut directly outside arrivals you are guaranteed a reasonable price - about 7 OMR into town - touts (of which there are plenty hanging about but as with everything here they are not insistent) may cost you less or more (taxis don't have meters) and there is clearly a multi-tier pricing system in operation with westerners paying the most! The car parks are directly across from the terminal and are cheap with the exception of the "executive" car park which has permanent shade and a huge price to boot - the long stay is cheaper and only about 50m further away. Departures is pretty painless and border control and security are both generally very quick although it can get busy late at night; there is rather limited shopping airside but some nice coffee shops. The airline lounges are OK but nothing to write home about. Be aware that all the gates are bus gates and they close the flights very early - up to 40 minutes before departure - to herd you onto the busses. So don't linger too long in the coffee shop!
