Munich Airport customer review

(Belgium)

The security check at terminal 2 was very slow employees chatting with each other whilst passengers queue men have even to take their tie off a lady had to take all her rings off there is no attempt for efficiency visible. Compared to other German airports it leaves the impression that security in Munich is uses as an excuse to punish passengers for flying. From Terminal 2 to the underground train is a an endless walk and the way is poorly signed (especially in the open (semi-outdoor) area.

Attendants do not know how to direct passengers from delayed flights. No quiet area or comfortable chairs to stretch out on if you are stuck for a few hours. No power outlets anywhere! Internet access is ridiculous. Need a PIN sent by mobile to get free access for 30 minutes. If the mobile does not work - you are out of luck.

Very bad city connection no express underground no train station. 40 mins travel to downtown. No free internet access no play area for children very dirty toilets and very expensive restaurant. Lufthansa Staff in terminal 2 are very unfriendly. Terminal 1 looks like very old and unclean. Transit between terminal 1 and 2 is bad with no connection between them - you need to go outside to reach terminal 1 or 2.

I find the transit arrangements very confusing especially if transferring from schengen to non schengen or vice versa. Lufthansa did not print me a boarding card for one flight meaning that I missed my connection despite the bus with all the passengers waiting by the gate! On another occasion when transferring from schengen to non schengen for a connection the bus dumped me my wife and young children at a gate with no lifts miles from the main hall. No immigration to be found there was no transfer desk and information desk. Eventually found airline desk who said myself and family could have check-in at gate. I now avoid Munich like the plague.

Overall a very good airport as a transfer passenger however I was a little disappointed that having followed the transfer signs you are eventually turned out into the main departure hall to clear security again. As I had arrived in the early hours this meant joining some very long lines for security. The wait wasn't overly long but as a major hub airport would have expected more convenience on a transfer.

Most of the shops and facilities were closed when we arrived from Singapore. Staff were miserable and inconsiderate. Long distances to walk around the terminal without travelators. Had to wait 45 minutes to take off because of traffic. Munich airport makes Manchester seem lively and efficient!

It took me just 1 minute to get through security controls and less than 2 to clear immigration this is what I call an efficient airport !

I've been a regular user since the days of the old Riem airport and the current airport amply justifies its status as one of the best in Europe. In over 20 years I've never had a bad experience attributable to the airport or its staff. It's big but logically laid out and easy to navigate and I've always found the staff pleasant to deal with. My most recent trip (CGN-MUC and MUC-EDI) was no exception - everything worked exactly as it should. My only criticism is the lack of a dedicated Heathrow Express-style rail link to the city centre. The S1/S8 trains are essentially local stopping trains which happen to go to the airport. It can be rather tedious as they potter their leisurely way through the suburbs and the S8 in particular can get very busy with commuters. Under some circumstances the airport bus is a better bet especially if you're going to the Schwabing area.

Am not surprised that Munich is constantly voted among Europe's best. Especially Star Alliance Terminal 2 is modern and clean plus stocked with shops of all kinds. It takes no time to check-in pass security and passport control (when flying non-Schengen at H) and to get to the gate. Admittedly bags sometimes take too long to arrive. I love the free newspaper and coffee service that Lufthansa provides there. Terminal 1 although 20 years old is also good. They even have a micro brewery (Air Braeu) serving delicious draughts.

If you read these reviews you come to the conclusion that Munich is very hit and miss. Either it's a breezy 5 minutes or a terrible ordeal. My experience at Terminal 1 as a non EU citizen is that it is a horrible ordeal. While there were 2 lines and 2 inspectors for EU passports control there were two lines merging to one "all other passport" inspector. A relatively short line that would have been 15-20 mins in any other airport took 60-90 mins. The passport inspector was unbearably slow without any added security that I could determine - we were asked several questions on entry to both the UK and the US but zero questions on exit from Munich. The lack of questions just seemed to make it slower - I've never seen anyone take so long to push a passport through a scanner and apply an exit stamp. This is exit passport control and yet it takes forever just to look at the passport picture and match it to the face of the person. In contrast once we got through passport inspection security itself was well staffed courteous and helpful. Several people were late for their flights due to the slow passport control. The airport rep explained that she had no control over the passport control process or staffing.
