"dirty, hot and uncomfortable"

(Germany)

Not Verified | It is dirty, hot and uncomfortable. No possibility to charge mobile devices in the waiting area. Gastronomic offer not reasonable (e.g. dried bread rolls) and overpriced. Ants everywhere. No drinks sale at the gate (at over 30C) but WiFi works.

"in desperate need of an upgrade"

(Kenya)

Trip Verified | The airport is in desperate need of an upgrade. It looks old and is falling apart. It certainly does not look like an international airport. There is also no proper coffee shop or restaurant. The basic coffee shop serves really bad coffee. They should have a coffee shop such as Java or Artcaffe for the discerning traveller. I also went to the small shop opposite gate 5. The lady in there was just busy watching something on her phone with the volume up. She was really cold towards her customers. I also noticed that she was not issuing receipts and that the shop had not name displayed outside. Not issuing receipts is illegal. I hope the airport authority looks into this. On the bright side, the toilets were clean and had a nappy changing table.

"in need of an upgrade"

(Kenya)

Trip Verified | I used Terminal 1. Passenger processing at this airport is very fast however the terminal building is in need of an upgrade. Boarding of my flight was slightly delayed and no announcement was made. Also, no FID screens at the boarding gate. It was quite hot and there is no air-conditioning. As I had arrived early, it would have been nice to have a shop and café of slightly higher quality although the 1 hour free wifi kept me busy.

"pleasant enough, small airport"

(United Kingdom)

Domestic arrival and departure at Mombasa. Walk across the tarmac on arrival but an airbridge on departure. The airport is beginning to show its age, but more than adequate for the current passenger numbers. The approach road is truly appalling, and the main road as bad with seemingly never ending road works. There is no air-conditioning [except in the business lounge], cooling being done by the fairly constant breeze. Minimal delays in passing through arrivals or departures. A shop and café airside and lots of little kiosks on arrival for car hire money exchange etc. A pleasant enough small airport.

"ample seats"

(United Kingdom)

Used Mombasa Airport late on Mon 14th March 2016, on a local flight, very quiet (about 100 pax) only one plane departing in the hour, security good, even picked up on detectors a small piece of lava we were carrying as souvenir from the lava field of Tsavo West. Café simple but adequate. Ample seats and clean toilets.

Mombasa Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

Typical African airport. After you go through the first bag security there is a long hot wait to get checked in. When you make it to the check in desk be prepared to be ripped off my advice is ask to see a supervisor or ask for the test certificate of the scales. Don't waste your time thinking you can go have a smoke in departures as they charge 400 shillings to get to the smoking room after that just another security check and a bag search. Bear in mind once through that there are no toilets either. Kenya has so much to offer pity they can't get it right.

Mombasa Airport customer review

(Netherlands)

Arrived from Nairobi and flew to Amsterdam on September 2nd 2012. Baggage arrived quickly from our domestic flight couldn't immediately find international departures but were helped friendly at the outside service desk. Security went fast but that could be attributed to the fact that it was a very quiet day (only 2 international flights departing after 3 pm) and we were early. Enough available power sockets for charging. Check-in opened a little over 3 hours before departure once again we were helped by a couple of very friendly guys. Staff on the lower floor overall was kind and helpful but we asked 3 different people if there was either a Burger King McDonalds or KFC at the airport and none of them gave us a straight 'no' answer they all directed us to the small sandwich counter on the second floor. On the second floor staff spoke poor English. Passport control went fast but was arbitrary they asked for my entire right hand (4 fingers + thumb) to be scanned while my sister and father didn't need to have their thumbs scanned. Free wireless internet of fairly good speed but very limited reach. A dozen or so of duty free shops. Half the ceiling fans were broken but since the second floor is not entirely walled up the fresh wind from outside cooled the waiting area down enough. No power sockets at gate 3/4 no toilets either if you need to go you can just walk right back. After asking very politely and kindly if there was a way I could charge my laptop for the long flight (13 hours) they agreed I could charge it behind a desk at the security check where I left it out of sight for over half an hour and I'm happy to say my faith in humanity remains the same it was right there where I left it when we boarded right on time.

Traveled in Feb/March 2012 and fingerprints are now scanned upon arrival slowing down the process considerably. From a departure perspective check-in and passport control were abysmal. Flew Thomson from the UK who add additional layers of security checks not 'enjoyed' by our German or Italian neighbours. Upon arrival at the airport we stood queuing continually for check-in security passport control and beyond that a second baggage/passenger scan and finally a hand luggage search/body search. In all we stood queuing for 2 hrs 45 mins.

Mombasa Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

We travelled back to the UK on 28th October - when booking in our hand luggage was weighed which increased our allowance (other passengers didn't have theirs weighed) we were informed we needed to pay £30. I offered to pay but was told someone would come and collect it thought this a bit odd but in a foreign country so did as requested. In departures just before our flight the same check in person approached us and asked for the money - I asked for some paperwork or a receipt but he said it was between us and he would have to get a supervisor. I told him I was aware he was putting it in his own pocket and he was very concerned that I would report him. I stupidly gave him the money to get rid of him as he was rather intimidating and our flight was due.

Mombasa Airport customer review

We have flown in and out of this airport nine times and have found it chaotic. Upon arriving there are not separate queues for those with visas and those who have to get a visa. Everybody is in the same queue. There are not enough staff on duty to organise queuing to make it more efficient. Hence you arrive in sweltering hot temperatures and it takes over an hour to get through to collect baggage. Can somebody not do something about this. It is also pretty bad for departures too. Very long unorganised queues and it takes forever to check in.
