"excellent service"

(United States)

Not Verified | Everyone working at the ground services at LPB airport gave us excellent service. We somehow missed that we could not board Laos Airline flight to Vietnam without proper documents. We had read we could get on arrival visas in Vietnam. A staff member helped us considerably, instructing and helping us get emergency visas. I think we might have missed our flight if it was not for her. Just wanted to acknowledge her excellent service.

"my fault for not checking"

(Laos)

Not Verified | I had a problem with the immigration. I somehow missed the immigration check after my evening flight from Hanoi to Luang Prabang, my responsibility of not having checked if I had a stamp. The next day I went back and they charged me 100$ on top of what I already paid, made me sign a paper written in Laos, not a copy or a picture I was able to take after I asked. I paid as there were no other option. They were not nasty but not kind, they kept telling me it's my fault for not checking. No sharing the responsibility or acknowledged that they might have not done a proper job on their hands. So check your stamps before you leave (there are 2 different separate lines to do: one for the visa the other for the immigration stamp) and be aware that they can play the game they want. At the end all is good you pay and you have your passport back with a big smile from their side.

"Appalling rip off"

(Japan)

Trip Verified | Appalling rip off of 36$ (35$ posted on notice board then an extra 1$ inexplicably demanded) for visa was expected but nevertheless galling. Welcome to Laos, give us some money for no good reason, and if you’re Canadian it’s 40$! Who knows why. Taxi drivers are raking in the cash. You pay 6$ for a taxi ticket into town. Then it turns out you are in a minibus with 6 other travelers. This means the driver is making 42$ for a 20 minute ride into town. That’s a fortune in Laos. Appalling.

"Absolutely terrible"

(Hong Kong)

Trip Verified | Absolutely terrible. 3 very long queues for immigration on arrival (deposit passport for visa, collect passport with visa and actual immigration). Took us roughly an hour, lots of empty, unmanned booths. Terribly organised. Upon leaving we waited approximately 30 minutes. We were told to change queues by staff and once we got to the front we were told to change again which meant starting at the back of the queue. Which was very long. Lots of people missing flights. Terribly organised and understaffed. Why are we paying all this money to immigration for visas if they are not hiring enough staff? An embarrassment to the country. An otherwise lovely trip scarred by the shambles that is Laos immigration.

"easy and fine"

(United States)

Not Verified | Luang Prabang Airport arrival was late at night, so almost everything was closed. It was a little hectic, with long lines, probably because I was arriving on a larger international flight and everyone, self included, were queueing for visa on arrival. It was fine once I stood around, very informal. No one is pleasant or unpleasant. The taxi stand drivers did rip me off, but only by $2 (it's a set fare, which I didn't know). Leaving from Luang Prabang was lovely. I arrived about two hours in advance. Check in and security was a breeze. It was about noon, and everyone was friendly. I was glad to have a glass of wine in the bar and some excellent lunch, surprisingly good honestly, and the WiFi worked too. I even did a bit of shopping in the small stalls since amazingly, the prices were not all that marked up compared to other parts of Laos (I was there long enough to get a good sense of "real" prices). They even had a small bookstore, and I got tons of cheap snacks, and some duty free Lao Lao to bring home. Everything about this airport, while not the cleanest in the world, or with the greatest signage, was easy and fine. I liked it overall very much. It was self-explanatory.

"a small and pleasant airport"

(Singapore)

Verified Review | Luang Prabang International is a small and pleasant airport with a decent selection of amenities and relatively good service. Upon arrival in Luang Prabang, immigration officials will direct you to the relevant desks for passport checks (if you don't need a visa you will be directed straight to the passport control desks). The airport has a money changer located right outside the arrivals/departures area where the US dollar rate is relatively similar to the rates quoted in town. There is a desk to order a taxi for 50000 kip per person, or if you prefer a cheaper ride, you can try to hail a tuk-tuk from outside the terminal. Check-in was very quick on my flight departing Luang Prabang, and I cleared the immigration check within 5 minutes as my SilkAir flight had few passengers. Inside the airport there are some shops selling local crafts and duty free outlets, though they weren't very interesting. Anyone who's flying Bangkok Airways will be pleased to not that they have a waiting lounge in this airport. There was plenty of seating in the gate areas and boarding of my flight was very efficient. All in all, this is a good airport to use - if you ever have a chance to use it and if your flight isn't full.

"feels very bureaucratic"

(Thailand)

Verified Review | Not a good impression on entering Laos through Luang Prabang airport. On the flight you are given some forms. You queue in the visa on arrival line, then you are told you should get another form from a desk in a corner, with no information. You queue again in the visa on arrival. You pay inflated prices in Thai Baht unless you happen to carry dollars. Then you queue again in another line with the first form you completed, which has same info as second. Staff were grumpy. Feels very bureaucratic.

"the airside facilities are a little unusual"

(United Kingdom)

Arrivals worked well with friendly staff, quick bags, and an efficient visa on arrival system. My flight was lightly loaded but there might be a significant delay with a full flight. Departures were a little unusual. Check in, emigration and security all worked well but the airside facilities are a little unusual. The departure lounge is on two levels, the lower level has a small cafe with limited food options and two small duty free shops. Upstairs there are a number of shops selling tourist gifts plus a large outlet on a third level which has most of the items you find in Luang Prabang's night market but not at the same price. When I visited there were no catering facilities in the upper lounge but there was a massage parlour with six passengers all having a foot massage! I would have been happy with this small airport whose terminal is a couple of years old but for the fact that some 42 bags were not loaded on my Vietnam Air flight to Hanoi due to a "Technical Problem". I don't know whether this was the fault of the airline or the airport.

"airport is clean"

(United Kingdom)

A very small airport, ours was the only plane there when we landed, so visa, immigration and luggage was quick, though I doubt if they could manage with more than one plane at once. Departure, check in quick and efficient. The airport is clean with a number of duty free shops (bit tacky).

"small, clean and efficient"

(United Kingdom)

Small, clean and efficient. For visa on arrival make sure you get from your airline both landing card and visa application form (plus fee, around 35-40 US dollars depending on nationality, a 1 dollar fee, and photo, which can be scanned from passport for 1 dollar fee in case you do not have one). Visa processing and immigration takes a reasonable amount of time and are done separately, so you will have to join two queue during rush time. If several flights arrive at the same time (a rarity) it will obviously take some time, but there is no stress, somehow a mirror of Lao in general, so there is laid back feeling about this charming airport. On PG flights from Bangkok and Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines using ATRs try to get a seat at the back for quick disembarkation. Other airlines use A320 which disembark from the front.
