London Stansted Airport customer review

Shocking - Shocking - queues - looked like a football crowd waiting to get through security (afternoon departure). It was difficult to believe and yes the security staff are unfriendly. Missed my flight. Drove home and looked at other airports for next one. Previously Heathrow (despite being a giant) was very helpful (lots of people to assist) friendly clean and quick (well done to them). Won't try Stansted again - it's just not worth it.

We used Stansted for our family holiday to Kos during the last week of August and our overall impression was of a clean and well run airport with minimal check in times and small queues when we returned. The toilet facilities were clean and there was a good selection of shops in the departure lounge. Unfortunately we could not buy very much due to the meagre Ryanair baggage allowance. Time taken to clear through security for four adults was about 15 minutes with mainly helpful security staff. The transit bus journey from the long stay airport was only 10 minutes and the bus driver on the return was extremely helpful and provided clear announcements to his passengers. The only criticism is the lack of lower priced restaurants (McDonalds Burger King) in the departure lounge making a rather expensive meal for a family of four but overall I was very pleased with Stansted on this occasion.

I have used Stansted regularly and often for the last 23 years hand have witnessed a steady decline in standards. The worst aspect are the unacceptable queues and waiting times at passport control by far the worst I have witnessed at any airport so far. This coupled with the average unpleasant attitude of the border agency officials the last one experienced only yesterday have made me decide on using other airports as a first choice. Stansted is the nearest in terms of distance and travel time to my home but the time saved with this is now overridden by the waiting transfer and wasted time on other aspects the main one being passport control. It is ironic that people from outside the EU get through this procedure faster than EU nationals in most cases.

I will never use Stansted again. The shambolic organisation just to drop your bags off coupled with the horrific security queues are bad enough but the audacity of charging in order to drop someone off is disgraceful. Not only does it cost £2 for 10 minutes or £3 for 15 minutes but if you stay in the "express set-down" area (and believe me there is nothing "express" about it when the queue to get into the area stretches all the way back down the road that runs parallel to the airport) for longer than 15 minutes you can expect a £50 fine. This is a cynical money-making plot by the airport's owners to extract every last penny from anyone doing a friend or relative a favour by dropping them off. Plus although the area was busy the parking spaces further away from the terminal were completely empty so the fine has no real standing when you consider that anyone who does actually overstay the allotted maximum time of 15 minutes isn't in any way depriving someone else waiting to park from being able to do so. It's the same at Southend airport you have to drive into a car park in order to be able to drop someone off as there is no set-down area to the tune of £5! Sadly this is just another case of "rip-off Britain" where we are continually squeezed tighter and tighter.

I will certainly be trying to avoid both Ryanair and Stansted airport after arriving back to the UK last night. There were 3 passengers who needed wheelchairs on the flight and rather than allowing the able bodied off of the flight first so that there was then room to give assistance to those with special needs the ground crew insisted on sorting out the passengers with special needs first fighting their way through the crowded aisle where there was no room to move - this alone delayed disembarkation from the plane. This was to be followed by the most horrendous queues for passport control at a UK airport with the queue stretching all the way from the passport desks back to the hallways from the plane exits. Bearing in mind that it was now midnight and all the desks were open I'd hate to see what the queues would be like at peak time. I can only recommend to pay £20 extra and fly with a decent airline from a decent airport.

My wife and I had the misfortune of flying into Stansted last week and out of it yesterday. Flying into it was good. No issues and the busses are a very short walk from the terminal. The issue with this airport is departures. We arrived back on our bus went to drop our bag and were greeted with a very long line for bag drop. We had pre- booked fast track security after reading some of the reviews on this site and we were glad we did that. Once though security is where our main issue with this airport started. We had 2 hours to wait and there was not enough seats for everyone who was there. The departures lounge was dirty too. The bar had no seats and when you did find one the table still had the previous guests trash on them. Also getting in and out of London takes a very long time from Stansted. If you wish to use the train it costs 4 times more than it does from Gatwick or Heathrow. My advise is use Gatwick or Heathrow and avoid Stansted.

Arrived at Stansted at 23.50 on August 13th to be met by a one hour queue for passport control. Going out huge queues for security. Absolutely unacceptable. This airport is run entirely for the benefit of the burgeoning security industry. Complaints from passengers are met with rudeness or threats of police intervention. An absolutely horrible place.

We flew from Stansted in July for the first time. We did meet and greet parking and was very simple and swift. The airport itself is very well run. We decided to get there earlier than needed as mentioned on other reviews but was not really necessary as there was no queue at check-in or security. This did however give us plenty of time to have a leisurely meal and drink before going to the departure gate via the train. All in all the experience was good at the airport with standard prices and good cleanliness.

I have been through Stansted at least 8 times in the last 12 months and it is obviously one of the more budget traveller suited airports in the country but remains a very acceptable airport to use. Just So there is no misunderstanding: The security has always been quite swift if not quick although reassuringly thorough with no major wait. After security the shops are centralized for the holiday travellers with food and bars etc as expected. If you are flying with Ryanair then the gates are situated a short walk away with their own smaller facilities such as bar newsagent and food. However the Airport always seem to hold everyone in the central area before announcing gates (probably to entice more from you wallet). I always drive to the airport and park with the mid stay being a short transfer excellent. Do not use the drop off short stay so cannot comment. The only negatives: Airport food prices. Same as everywhere but the quality has always been fair to good. So no complaints. There are normally complimentary newspapers in the mornings and Toilets etc have always been clean on the times I have had the need. Generally I think if you are a little savvy and do not expect first class treatment for a minimum cost then Stansted is a great value for money airport.

Worst airport I have ever used coupled with Ryanair make it an experience to be avoided at all costs. The security staff behave like MacDonalds rejects. On 3 occasions have nearly missed flights despite arriving earlier and earlier. The whole customer service is appalling. Everything is designed to pick your pocket. The final insult was to have to pay £5 to get to a flight purely because they have deliberately created massive queues at the security checks with insufficient staff (and what staff they have are rude and ignorant). Makes Heathrow and Gatwick look like model airports.
