It is a terrible airport - flew back from Turin on Sunday with Thomas Cook - flight time 1.5 hrs - wait for luggage 1 hr 35 mins. Next time will go to Stansted - how can it be quicker to fly from Italy than to get a bag across the airport. Lousy customer service.

Sunday evening April 1 - flew in from Reykjavik. Really bad queues at border control - why did they ever remove iris recognition? Then we waited and waited to even know what carousel our luggage was being sent to. When I asked they eventually made an announcement that the Cargo had blocked the luggage trucks. More than half an hour before any luggage appeared. How ever are we going to cope with the Olympics? Interesting comments from Virgin Airlines today re queues at Border Control.

Arrived from Hungary and had the usual long walk to the passport area. There are clearly problems here with very long queues that are unacceptable. Even the so called fast electronic scanners were so slow that a long queue had developed! Only in the USA and the UK do such problems seem to persist. A grim welcome home. To be fair to the new airport owners they do seem to be trying to improve things but have been let down by the Border Control management.

Flew out to Hamburg return. Departures not so bad queuing at security whilst operatives stood around and machines not in use departure lounge scruffy but building work in progress. Return flight (approx 1 hour and on time) followed by 30 mins plus queuing at border control - desks not manned staff milling around chatting. Never experienced such indifference in mainland Europe or Asia.

Parking in Short Stay Car Park at North Terminal was a little tricky as it was practically full. Entered the Terminal and headed for British Airways check-in. Greeted immediately and assisted with the bag drop which we had never done before. Taken straight to a desk to hand our bag in. Through security in 10 minutes.

Arrived from Banjul on Friday 23 March 2012 at 21.20. The queues to passport control can only be described as total chaos - and potentially dangerous. Waited for over an hour with hundreds of people in an enclosed 'tunnel' waiting for passport control. No airport staff anywhere to be seen. My husband and I have the new electronic passports - designed to speed things up? That made things even worse for us. The only 'good' thing was that we didn't have to wait for baggage. Finally got out of the airport at 22.50 to find we had missed our coach!

Arrived off Virgin Las Vegas flight mid-morning and the one plus was it wasn't too far a hike to reach immigration. Queues though were horrendous – we were having to queue up outside the area. I have a biometric passport so got directed to the automated gates my friend who has a non-biometric passport got through the extremely lengthy queue quicker than my drastically short queue. The wait for luggage was relatively short. Checking in for my ABZ flight was very quick. Going back through security was painless and queuing time was negligible. Food options were good. Plenty of seats on the upper level but on the lower there was hardly any in comparison. We'd missed our slot but given how quiet Gatwick is in comparison to Heathrow there was no major lengthy delay in getting a new slot.

Arrived at Gatwick north terminal on a connecting flight from Manchester to USA. The terminal looked new and very clean but I was surprised that although I arrived on a domestic flight I had to go all the way to the main terminal to have my passport checked instead of going out onto the concourse. Be warned there are long lines you could be waiting for 20 minutes at passport check so would recommend a layover of at least an hour if connecting. Security checkpoint was very efficient and security officers friendly. Apart from the unnecessary delay Gatwick was very pleasant to travel through.

Arrived LGW on a sun evening. At 21.30 both terminals look pretty deserted. Terminal South is connected to the train station through arrivals. No hotel information nobody at the information desk. Cabs are expensive. North terminal look very clean and new especially departures at the upper floor but rather cold and impersonal. I was surprised to see only two checking lines at security. After security there are far more gates than I remember. Gatwick Express to Victoria Station is a great service and so is the 24h shuttle connecting the two terminals.

This is not an airport I use through choice because of location but it was the only place I could fly from to my usual destination to use up the last of my Air Miles. South terminal did not seem that busy for 07.00. Airside there is plenty of seating. My only gripe was that I could not open the security gate with my paper boarding pass which elicited a surly comment from a member of security. If you've not been to Gatwick South - there are now barriers - like the London Underground - which will gain you access airside when you swipe your boarding card. I wouldn't use through choice but not under impressed with South Terminal.
