"plenty of shops and food"

(Malaysia)

I'm in transit to this airport before continuing my journey to Kuala Lumpur. The cons to this airport is the boarding gates are shared between two airlines. There are two queuing lines in front of the boarding gates (6A & 6B) and the boarding room was full and hot. It's a mess when both passengers queuing at the same time. Other than that, this airport had basic services and amenities for the people. The toilet was clean. There are plenty of shops and food.

"scan the luggage twice"

(Canada)

Not Verified | It's a fine airport however for International travel they scan the luggage twice, the first time at the entrance of the International Terminal and no outside water is allowed as per usual. They then after being inside the gates check your carry luggage once more, after you have filled your water in the terminal and at this point they make you dump your water again and then of course there is no water from that point on. The. you have to purchase water onboard. Makes no sense.

"airport very well laid out"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Honeymooning in various resorts in Borneo, so visited Kota Kinabalu several times during our trip. Check in area busy and crowded and Air Asia check in process a bit confusing, but staff very kindly helped us out. Rest of airport very well laid out and signage very helpful with ample seating at boarding gates.

"Such a disappointment"

(Australia)

Not Verified | Such a disappointment that a basic neccesity as such can't be provided for the comfort of the visitors. Toilets were smelly, wet with no toilet paper. Rubbish and sanitary pads were thrown inside a cubicle with the bins not cleared. Obviously no cleaner to maintain the standard of cleanliness. If one do not show that standard it is difficult for others to do their part in respecting the use of such amenities. Please do something about it and let visitors leave with a good note.

"Staff were not professional"

(Russian Federation)

Third time transiting in this airport (Terminal 1) and was not satisfied with the quality of service from the staff around the airport. Staff were not professional and lacked basic etiquette. Airport is empty and has hardly anything to do. Immigration and immigration staff are not professional and lacked basic communication skills as I was told to wait for 4 hours without any notice or information before being able to exit through the immigration. Once I went through immigration I was shocked as the airport looked very untidy, unclean and old. The toilets are also very unhygenic and unsanitary as it reaked of waste and the floorings were all wet. The only good experience that I had whilst on my transit was eating McD. Would not recomend transiting through Kota Kinabalu, better to transit through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.

"ample seating area"

(Malaysia)

A modern medium size airport, with ample space airside, got plenty of outlets at the departure area and efficient check-in counter. The airport is near to the city centre, and it is easy to reach by taxi and private transportation. Once through the security check, you will be greeted by an airy airside with an ample seating area near to the gate, and due to the design of the terminal, the distance of the gate is really short and gave ample time for the passenger to catch their flight.

"modern, clean and spacious"

(United Kingdom)

Terminal 1 is modern, clean and spacious. Arriving 0130hrs there were several Immigration Desks open. No Landing Cards required and fingerprint scan for ID purposes. A few minutes wait for bags and we were landside within 15 minutes of landing. Taxi's are a fixed price of 45 MYR to the city. We departed late at night and there was a burger place open landside but everything was closing around midnight airside. Good security, quick and efficient check-in and Immigration. Not much comfortable seating air side.

Kota Kinabalu Airport customer review

(Thailand)

Relatively a modern mid sized airport located quite near the city. Arrivals and departures were fast and hassle free with polite immigration. Several food venues with OK prices and a gift shop and as usual selling post cards but never the stamps! Even if the city is very close by taxis still charge 30-50MYR for the ride which is 16USD which I find rather high seeing that I pay the 30MYR equivalent when I return to Bangkok to the city. The former's distance is less than 8km and the latter is around 40km including tolls!

Kota Kinabalu Airport customer review

(Australia)

Arrived at the BKI low cost terminal from Taipei via AirAsia and took a cab that charged RM30 from the low cost terminal to the main terminal (i.e. terminal 1) to catch MASwing domestic flight to SBW. To be fair the main terminal was far better than the low cost terminal as it was quieter and more spacious. The big lacking of this terminal was that the air conditioning did not seem to function properly causing the whole airport to be humid hot and uncomfortable. The departure hall was almost empty with very limited choices of shops and restaurants. My feeling was that this airport was simply under used and should definitely need more to- and-fro flights. The other downside was that the announcement was barely heard and the poor command in languages especially English language did not help at all. Would not recommend this airport for long transit like mine.

Kota Kinabalu Airport customer review

KKIA has seen a lot of redevelopment lately which is improving the airport considerably. There two terminals located at opposite ends of the single runway: Terminal 1 for full fare airlines and Terminal 2 for low cost. Terminal 1 is currently being redeveloped into a brand new terminal. Departures Arrivals and some of the gates are completed. The new building is spacious and light if a little grey and souless. Check-in Immigration and Arrivals/Baggage Reclaim processes all seem to work well without significant delays. Shopping is limited but being expanded. Air-side there is free wi-fi at Starbucks but it is slow. Terminal 2 was completed under 3 years ago as a purpose-built low cost terminal. The departure lounge is a bit cramped and crowded during busy spells and catering is limited but everything else seems to work OK considering it is "no frills".
