Keflavik Airport customer review

(Ireland)

On arrival we found a massive queue from passport control snaking around the corner to the top of the escalators. Two Easyjet flights had just landed at the same time. People were coming up and hitting the back of the queue. Was not very safe. Eventually we found three booths open and shortly after a fourth opened. On departure I found the toilets very dirty and messy with paper towels everywhere and bins overflowing. At 9am on a Sunday morning all the shops at our gates were closed. Then one shop opened but it did not have a bottle of water. Just sweets and booze.

Keflavik is one of my favourite airports. It is small and everything is from one terminal that makes it very easy. The service is good and the Icelandic people are always friendly and service minded. It must be one of the airports in the world where the flights almost never gets cancelled due to weather in Iceland. They are use to it so they handle it.

A good experience arriving from Manchester for a 3 day stopover before flying onto the USA and a short transfer on the return trip. Very clean spacious and relaxed atmosphere even during the short transfer. All staff pleasant and helpful. A joy when compared to much larger airports.

On 19 December of the ten desks which should have been open for check-in only four were operating and sometimes reduced to two as staff got up and left without replacement and disregarding the ever growing queue of passengers. When we eventually got through check-in the security lines were the next obstacle. Although these were quick the need to take cameras out of bags along with everything else was odd. When we arrived on the 16th the immigration process was swift and baggage was on the line quickly. Some gift shops and duty free in departures but prices were hardly inspiring.

Arrival from LHR swiftly through passport control and on to waiting Flybuss to Reykjavik. Departure to LHR through well signposted security to large and airy departure area with plenty of shops and spacious food outlets. Generous sized meals on offer that along with a small beer cost only £15 far less than you'd pay at LHR for a similar dish. The airport has warm wood floors and crisply clean glass and metal walls/partitions etc. Only thing not to like was small and cramped gate area (gate 7) with sufficient seating for barely half the passengers.

Landed here twice on both the outward and return legs of a MAN-KEF-SEA trip. The airport is modern looking inside but the cafes are small and are spectacularly pricey. The airport did have wi-fi but you had to pay with a credit card for it. Screens easy to find and ground staff very friendly and helpful. There are pleasant gift shops. No facilities for postal mail but the gift shop owner offered to post a letter for me which arrived. Didn't appear to be many power points for laptops etc. Would have liked to see more seating as airport can be a little crowded as transatlantic flights on connections start to roll in.

Quite modern architecture but few facilities and what there was had extortionate prices. I was transferring to another flight and queuing once again through security is a nightmare. Going up the escalator for transferring passengers you immediately hit the queue for security. There are no signs to indicate security is the first thing you encounter so you get caught off guard if you need to take things from your bag like electronic equipment. Instructions on what can and can't go through appear half way down the queue. Past passport control you have to present your ticket to an officer to let you into the gate. After this point you can't come out and there are no screens to tell you about your flight here. It is completely pointless putting officers here.

This airport is modern clean and well staffed. One must pay for internet and it can not be accessed except in the main terminal (not at the gates). The strangest thing is that there are very few chairs and very little space provided at each gate so one feels in the way of other passing passengers.

Keflavik is a nice little airport with great shopping (lots of local Icelandic content - not just luxury goods). Transfers are easy given the small size of the airport and the limited traffic (Icelandair Iceland Express and Spanair are about it) means low chance of delays or screw-ups. Saga business lounge is nice and quiet. Seating areas near gates are barely adequate to handle passenger volumes.

Excellent experience at this small but well planned airport. Used automatic check-in which works well - if you ignore the instruction to enter your passport into the machine with your photograph uppermost. The reverse applies. Icelandair staff available to assist with the process. There were four flights scheduled to leave at 5.00pm two of which were to the USA and a long single queue snaked around the departures hall. There were eight desks open and all passengers processed quickly. Security excellent with friendly and thorough staff. Airside there are plenty of shopping opportunities and several refreshment options. Short walk to the departure gates. Slightly chaotic boarding process with two queues bearing down on just the one agent at the gate.
