"short queuing times"

(Netherlands)

Verified Review | Kashgar Airport is located in one of the most remote corners of China. It is a small airport, handling almost only domestic flights of which most go to or via Urumqi. I spent almost 2 days at this airport due to delays and cancellations on my flight back to Urumqi. The arrival and baggage reclaim hall, check-in hall and departure area are all quite spacious, even when there are many delays. Good overview and orientation inside the terminal. In case of delays the amount of normal seating in the check-in hall is very limited, there are only a few general seats and some seats in the small cafe in the corner of the hall. So be sure to get seated in the cafe when you have the feeling that your flight may be delayed, so you can wait comfortably until check-in opens. The food options in the cafe are limited to only 2: rice with chicken or noodles with chicken. Another option is buying instant noodles at the shop located in the check-in hall and get some hot water at one of the taps located in the hall. During delays there is not much to do at this airport, so take some entertainment. There are no airline staff inside the terminal, so in case of cancellations there is no one to turn to besides airport staff. And they do not take any responsibility and refer you to the airline customers service hotline which is not very helpful either. Utter chaos among passengers is quite common and happened to me 3 times here alone. Check-in process is OK, security screening is strict but not a real hassle. Short queuing times, as it is not a very big and busy airport. English-speaking staff is difficult to find at the airport. F&B and retail options in the departure lounge are very limited. So do not expect to have a nice diner before your flight. They do sell very nice local sweet and dried fruits. Wifi is available, but only if you have a Chinese phone number, which I do not have. Toilets are not clean, and don't be surprised when locals do not close the toilet door. There is no welcomers hall in the terminal, friends and family need to wait outside. I would not recommend this airport in case you tend to stay for a multiple hours. But this is the only comfortable way into Kashgar. Other options are train or bus, which most people told me to avoid at any cost.
