"What a negative experience"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Having travelled through Geneva airport for many years today I found the departure experience arduous. What a negative experience. The worst in decades for my family. The checkin at EasyJet was so slow. One very long queue for all destinations then the hectic shuffle for call through to desk 1 as flight gate closure times are within 20minutes! Elderly passengers, those with prams or more luggage bypassed to end up at the back of a new queue. Honestly shocking crowd control. This morning at 5am I also observed a poor service for passengers at security. Boarding passes were promptly checked in a mannerly fashion by one lady but after that confusion began; 3 security personnel stood or moped about as the passengers were poorly directed by posts and tapes. When approached directly they were unhelpful. Passengers came to a congestion point at one end. The personnel completely oblivious to this for the duration of my wait in the queue. At that corner the people from 2 or more taped queues merged into one. Passengers in the outside queue arrived to the corner quickly to merged into the original queue bypassing 2/3 of those waiting passengers. With only 5 minutes before our gate was to close we reached an X-ray belt. All in all a most unsatisfactory experience and not what I have been used to in Geneva Airport. Evidently some of the staff need to pull their socks up. Certainly no time left to shop, eat or spend money on the other side of security. Went straight to our gate with little time to spare.

"Security queues are ridiculous"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | The worst airport I have had the displeasure of travelling to and from. Departures especially bad. Arrived to a bomb scare (which itself might seem an unavoidable situation) but according to the taxi driver it is a regular occurrence and nothing is ever done to mitigate problems. Departure hall is absolute chaos (despite the scare) the ski season was in full swing and apparently is always like this. Security queues are ridiculous. Departure hall prior to gates is an odd set up of shops along corridors. Swissport clearly disorganised and understaffed. Delayed luggage to the aircraft, only one of two stairs delivered to the plane for departing staff. The aircraft captain was clearly frustrated but remained professional. I’m either going to drive or head to Chambery next time.

"Geneva Airport was a disgrace"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Almost 4 hours of continual queuing from arriving at T2 this morning to finally boarding the plane. Geneva Airport was a disgrace, hundreds and hundreds of people being funnelled through miles of zig zag ques, for hours on end. No explanations, no apologies as to why it was so bad. As someone commented the airport authority there couldn't put a child's jigsaw together, let alone run an airport. The over crowding was so bad it was dangerous, if someone fainted they would have remained upright. Imagine arriving at passport control eventually to discover 4 border officers and many hundreds of people queuing to pass them. Totally absurd. And seemingly no one there batted an eyelid. Needless to say the flights all left late and airline staff who were blameless in the whole fiasco bore the brunt of the frustrated passengers.

"such a shambles of an airport"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Unfortunately, we were flying into Geneva with BA (that bit is another story!), and could not believe that the Swiss, apparently renowned for efficiency, could run such a shambles of an airport. We were met almost immediately on arrival by the end of the passport queue, which snaked round many barrier lines and well down the passage. At this point you couldn't see all of the queue, which turned out to consist of our BA flight only - but having passports checked by, get this - one! One sole immigration person for about 300 people. Staff hanging around were of no help at all. Needless to say this took around an hour and by the time we found our luggage (poorly signposted), it had all been delivered and was languishing abandoned on a stationary luggage belt. We were over an hour late for our booked transport which, thank God, had waited for us. If I have a choice, I would never travel via Geneva Airport again. After reading the reviews, I am dreading our return journey in a few days. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

"Avoid this airport at all costs"

(Australia)

Not Verified | Abysmal. Avoid this airport at all costs. The queues were appalling, the signage was woeful and it was completely understaffed. Utter disregard for the paying traveller.

"a complete mess!"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Many of the electric walking paths and electric stairs are turned off. The bunker-like doors to enter some of the toilet are not user friendly. The airport has no beverages selling machines and if you need it overnight you will have to drink out of the tap, or pay full airport price in the stores when it's open. If you need to pay in cash, they charge a 100% tax on it. And there is no proper signs! It is so easy to get lost and then they would double stamp your passport again for nothing ... a complete mess!

"worst experience I have ever had"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | We were advised by EasyJet to arrive at Geneva airport 3 hours before departure, which we did so, reluctantly. On arrival it was chaos everywhere. Even drop off was chaos with nowhere to park or even, briefly stop. Eventually a car pulled out of a space and we were able to offload our luggage. On entering the terminal, there were people everywhere. I’ve been travelling for 60 years. It was like a third world airport! We followed the signs towards the check in passing other airline check ins. ALL had huge queues. On arrival at the EasyJet one we were told to go right back outside the terminal to join the queue. This we did and waited a total of 2 hours 15 minutes before we eventually were able to do our bag drop. There was no individual desk per flight, it was just one huge queue. In that area, there were multiple desks unused. It seems crazy that there were not two or three times the number of desks open for easyJet alone. I’m not sure about the other airlines as I was unable to see those in the melee! The rest of the process, passport control and bag check was good. The EasyJet boarding was good. It was just the check in. The worst experience I have ever had including many Third World airports.

"Awful. Queues on departure"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Awful. Queues on departure, no real signage telling you if you're in the right queue. Bad information. Bags take forever to arrive. Too busy. Bad scheduling (2 BA planes apparently taking off at the same time from adjacent gates).

"flying to the French Alps each March via Geneva Airport makes me a complete nutcase"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | The definition of insanity is to repeat an action over and over and expect a different result. With that in mind, flying to the French Alps each March via Geneva Airport makes me a complete nutcase. I take some kind of weird solace in the equal misery of fellow passengers at said hell-hole yesterday, and in the Eurovision-style 'nil points' awarded by fellow reviewers. If zero stars were an option here I would have taken it in a nanosecond. Sadly, and somewhat strangely, in this land of cuckoo clocks and quality/extraordinarily priced timepieces, nanoseconds tend not to feature at Geneva Airport. Sadder still, neither do seconds or minutes. Hours are the minimum measure of time, with an eon the next recognisable timeslice. Somewhere in between, I and thousands of others in the same unfortunate predicament will have uttered a sentence involving the phrase or at least the sentiment of losing the will to live. Flying with BA, we were initially horrified to see queues outside the terminal building waiting to check in. On being informed that that was the easyJet queue, initial relief and, I must admit, a degree of smugness led us into the terminal and a search for the BA check-in area. The scene inside reminded me somewhat of the American airlift from Saigon in the final knockings of the Vietnam War. The good news was that the BA queue began inside the terminal. Unfortunately, it then snaked around a corridor or two and made its way outside the building - clearly to allow folk a chance to breathe - and back in again. Resistance was futile, patience in abundance an essential quality to avoid some kind of seizure, and hope beyond hope the general emotion that we might all someway, somehow get onto our aircraft of choice at the allocated time. Needless to say, having checked in we then had the next equally tortuous procedure of going through security. An idle thought crossed my mind that had I been a retractable belt barrier salesman as my first career I would have amassed enough wealth to travel by private jet to Chambery. Anyway, you get the picture. Onto an equally miserable departure gate with next to zero seating, before eventually boarding the plane. Never again! Until, of course, the next time...

"Everywhere was a queue"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Hello? Is anybody listening? Yes – Mr./Ms. casual reader of reviews – I’m talking to you. I know what you’re thinking because I thought it too. You’re thinking “It can’t be that bad. I’ll just allow another hour or two to navigate the airport and book anyway.” I’m here to tell you you’re right. It’s not as bad as folk are saying. It’s much, much worse. We arrived many hours before our scheduled flight time and were surprised by the number of people apparently milling around outside the airport. We managed to get past this horde into the airport building only to be met by a chaotic scene of intersecting queues with no order whatsoever. Everywhere was a queue. Upon closer inspection there were some temporary tape barriers keeping some of the queues separate, but these served merely to hinder our progress to someone that might be able to help us. We did manage to find someone only to be told that the milling throng outside was, in fact, the EasyJet queue. We should join the back of it and someone would tell us what to do. This “queue” was hundreds of people long, it snaked back and forth around the whole of the ground floor of the airport building before snaking through the doors outside and down the outside of the building. Fortunately, it wasn’t raining or we would have got wet. For us it was cold. So we got cold. Our misery was punctuated by frazzled EasyJet staff running the length of the queue shouting the time of the current most urgent aircraft to fill. Some folk were removed from the queue and disappeared. Eventually, with less than an hour to take off, it was our turn when we heard our flight time shouted by a staff member. We were ushered into the airport building through the crush, and told to wait. A few more joined us, presumably plucked from different areas of the queue and the staff member ordered us to follow him – and set off at pace. Picture trying to follow a jogging man through a tight scrum of people with skis, bags, coats and other paraphernalia. The man quickly disappeared into the distance and the miserable line of followers ended up following each other more in hope than expectation. By talking to dozens of fellow wretched airport sufferers in various queues we did eventually find the end of another queue that seemed to be populated by folk from our flight. To be fair, this queue was only about 50-60 strong and did end up at a series of what I can only assume were emergency check in desks. The whole process was utterly chaotic. The airport was rammed, mothers were trying to comfort screaming children, nobody appeared to be managing the situation. The staff were clearly almost as stressed as their unfortunate customers. After a difficult check in caused by technology issues we ran a long way to the gate. We got lucky. Our flight was delayed by an hour or there was no way we would have made it. There is something horribly wrong with either the airport, or EasyJet, or, I suspect, some unholy combination of faults on both sides that made this experience truly dreadful. Please pay attention to the reviews. Avoid the Geneva/EasyJet combination if you can.
