Geneva Airport customer review

(Switzerland)

I have to use this airport a lot and have taken time before I write a review to make sure that if is a fair one, as you can get different experiences on different days. This is about the Swiss side of the airport. The airport has gone through major construction/"improvement" in the last few years, which I think has made much of the experience worse. Firstly, the ridiculous drop off area where cars are left lined up onto the main road waiting to get in because of the crazy design. Then, for reasons I can't explain, getting through Security is now slower than it was before these improvements. Worst of all is the lack of seating, just about everywhere. Before Security, after Security and at the gates. A tip is to go upstairs before you go to the gates. There is seating there but no restaurants or cafes. There is also a very poorly signed children's play area upstairs. Usually empty because no one knows about it. As others have mentioned, food and drink options are very expensive but that is normal for Switzerland. Very little else to do or look at if you have a wait. On arrival, look out for the free train ticket into Geneva available in the baggage area. Taxis are normally plentiful but expensive. The train station is at the airport and all trains stop at Geneva centre (Cornavin). There are a greater selection of shops and restaurants at the airport station (still not fantastic, but better) and at the end of the area is the Migros supermarket which is a cheaper option than a restaurant. Free wifi only for 90 mins and often a slow connection.

Avoid transit flights through this airport by any means. I had a transfer there with a 6 hour gap, which would not generally be a problem, if it wasn't during the night. There is not a transfer zone, we were let out from the plane to the space where the luggage belts were. When I asked where I can wait for my flight, I was told that there is no place for it and I can either stay there with those luggage belts or go to the city center, which didn't really make sense at 11 pm. After 30 minutes they told evetyone that they have to leave and close this place so we need to go out to the arrivals and departures hall. There was nothing, everything closed, no shops, no restaurants and no food. Luckily there were some chairs, but people mostly slept on the floor. No staff were there except 2 guards. When at 5am everything started working, I realised that prices are incredible, to get some coffee with a croissant I paid around 6 euros. Nevertheless, I was happy for this after such a night. The funniest part was the boarding - we were sent to the most remote gate, put into the bus and then taken to another gate, back into the airport and from this gate we boarded through jet bridge. Overall, if you have a choice, just don't go there.

Excellent on arrival and departure. Good signage in multiple languages. Wide variety of shops and restaurants. Short queues on departure. Security personnel matter-of-factly polite. Just beyond baggage carousels on arrival, a machine gives a free ticket for the train to central Geneva (Cournavin Station) - and the trains run every 10-15 minutes. Departure lounges for airlines serving the airport.

Arrival via train to airport. Walked into French Sector of airport for French domestic flight. Arrived 3 hours early due to previous comments about long queues and delays. Yes the queue was long for early morning but moved very quickly and well organized. Security staff smiling and jovial - what a surprise! French sector waiting lounge is small, cramped and boring but looks like some renovations occuring. WIFI free for 1.5 hours.

Smaller International Airport in Switzerland which seems to miss that many passenger would like to charge a cell phone or laptop at the Gate or somewhere in the Transit area. Investing some CHF 60'000 to 80'000 would probably be needed to make this upgrade. Customer Satisfaction would be higher. Not Swiss style service you offer here AIG!

They have re-organised their traffic management for arrivals and departures (but arrivals is the real problem) and have created a nightmare! Given the skiing traffic coming through this facility it should not be a surprise that cars arriving to pick up passengers will often have roof boxes fitted. Ours does. There is no short term parking for departures for tall vehicles anywhere (height limit is 2m). The result is endless circling through departures eventually holding up genuine departure traffic up as it is much more time consuming to pack a car than unpack it. I would happily pay for short term parking if only they provided it. Third world facilities compounded by complete and arrogant disregard for paying customers. As a family we use this airport for 20 flights or so each winter.

Have used this airport 8 times in the last three years and it is usually an agreeable experience. Queuing for security and immigration is fast and straight forward queuing for gates however is difficult due to a lack of space. The airport is clean and spacious but there is not a lot to do unless you are looking for a new watch. Overall Geneva airport does its job but is nothing special.

Coming back home after an overseas business trip I did not have the feeling of being welcomed to my own city! Rude custom agents endless queue on passport control impolite airport staff 30 min for baggage claim. And I'm not talking about departure - worse than ever. Check in desks overcrowded endless queues at a few screening control desks opened on a Saturday. Overpriced drinks and snacks small and narrow duty free shops. Very poor airport which pretends to be international.

I dread going to this Airport on my annual ski-trip. It certainly puts paid to the sense of Swiss Efficiency. Shockingly poor selection if you want to eat or drink something. No proper bar or individual restaurants in departures just this ghastly looking canteen type place where coffee and a pastry will cost you about 11 Euro or 6 (yes 6) Euro for a can of Heineken. It's just awful. Slow moving Queues for passport and Security controls. Terrible lay out of just about everything in the departures area it is like being in a Porta Cabin. I think you only get 90 minutes Free Wi-Fi as well. Given how inefficient everything is you will be wanting more.

Rip off airport with no free water anywhere or free electric plugs and very expensive poor coffee. Plus check in and security slow. Tip: get your water topped up onboard before you leave as no free water anywhere even the loos have tepid water for hand washing only and the concessions refuse to give free tap water for small drinks with medication even. Prices for any food is sky high eg 11 Euro's for coffee and croissant. Best tip: At arrivals level walk to railway station three minutes from airport in train station there is a super market with cheap food and drink. All under cover and very short walk away.
