"the worst airport in the world"

Not Verified | We live in the east Midlands so if we want to use another airport we have to travel. We are frequent fliers. After Nairobi this is the worst airport in the world. Even Addis Ababa is better. Poor infrastructure ie, it can't cope with the amount of passengers. Surly staff. Just awful.

"always dread arrival"

Not Verified | East Midlands Airport is the nearest airport so is generally the one we use. Passport Control is something we always dread on arrival and it never fails to live up to our low expectations. Dreadful doesn't come close to describing it. We have used the airport for years so have seen the change from mainly staffed passport control gates to the automated service. In the past, our plane would arrive and in we would all go to passport control (often more than one plane landing so a lot of people). And guess what, out of maybe 10 booths only 2 or (if we were lucky) 3 were in use. Long frustrating wait. Now in 2019, they have a few more automated e-passport gates. Oh my goodness, these are even worse! People stand there for ages. Some passports work, quite a lot don't. You then get asked to go to the staffed gate. The staffed passport gate queues go down much faster now! Why has passport control at East Midlands Airport been so bad for so long?

"massive queues"

Trip Verified | Security check-in was horrific! Every single bag in my queue went through the scanner and over to the otherside to be re-examined, every bag! This led to massive queues on one side and a build up of waiting passengers on the other as they awaited to recieve their bag after being checked by one of the members of staff that had a face like a smacked bottom. Majority of the bags were packed correctly, including mine and therefore it's clear these moody jobs-worth individual's are checking evey bag individually rather than going off the systems in place. Airport is too small. Layout is poor.

"staff were unprofessional and disorganised"

Trip Verified | What a complete farce this airport arrival system is. We had to be herded like cattle the moment we stepped off the plane, joining queues from other destinations and again being herded confusingly all the way to passport control which took nearly an hour. Some non EU passengers were given preferential treatment, passing through in a fast track lane and no explanation why the other hundreds of people were kept waiting. The airport looks like a third world country's airport and staff were unprofessional and disorganised. I never want to use EMA again despite it being my closest airport. This experience was stressful and tiring, especially at 1 am when you've already been travelling for 8 hours total. EMA need to sort themselves out, invest in a system which works and doesn't leave their customers feeling like second class citizens. A good holiday spoilt.

"completely over the top"

Not Verified | Unprofessional Jobsworths. Supervisors on the security checks were completely over the top. We were quiet, polite and just surprised at their behaviour towards us. 20 minutes to check our toiletries and then throw things away because our see through bag wasn’t as small as theirs. Never had this issue before. Are they new staff for the summer? We use the airport about 3 or 4 times a year and were surprised at their behaviour which we had not seen before. We are going to use other airports where possible. East Mids airport is not a nice place to visit anymore. What has changed? Going out is terrible and arriving back is terrible - should it be like this? Other airports are great. Management and Customer services should be ashamed of themselves.

"airport requires massive investment"

Not Verified | This airport requires massive investment with staff! A very long wait to get through security, this took over 45 minutes, we are aware of security and the importance’s of this however this is due to the airport being too small for the amount of departures. On arrival from home you have to wait for a bus following landing then lengthly queues through passport control. If you have baggage to collect then non of the carousels working! More investment required to deal with the amount of passengers.

"a pretty good airport"

Trip Verified | Arrived here on Ryanair from Spain around 11 pm. Bussing to the terminal was a bit slow waiting for everyone to get off the plane and onto the bus. A bit of a queue but it moved quite quickly as there were e-gates in addition to three manned immigrations officers. Officers were friendly, polite, and efficient. Didn't check a bag but seating area was a bit dirty. Limited electric outlets in the terminal. A Greggs open till midnight, another coffee shop, and a WHSmiths were open later. Overall, a pretty good airport with limited National Express and pretty good local bus connections. Recommended.

"Airport trying to be something its not"

Not Verified | First time used here in a while and now I remember why. From entering an empty security area (yippee thought this was good) so walked under a barrier ribbon rather than the totally 6 empty cattle lanes to be told to go back and walk all the way around? There was no one in front or behind at all and only my wife and I there? And the point was? There was no one else there in front or behind, just us? Similar to meet the Fockers plane boarding experience only with a control freak on the loose! Which when I advised we had priority boarding then changed to all smiles and all change and they then lifted another ribbon to let us through there anyway? Certain staff missed the interpersonnel skills course then! Get yourself signed back up quick. Airport trying to be something its not unfortunately, late taking off, late boarding (only 2 planes in that hour?). Dreaded return, waited for steps waited for bus waited for passports and then waited an hour and 30 mins for bags, don't bother paying premium as your bags come off last anyway. Handling really poor and slow and generally bad, wont be rushing to use again would have been quicker through Heathrow and drive back! Sort your staff and procedures please its not hard.

"disgrace to its customers"

Not Verified | Arrived to drop off my partner for a flight to Dublin, I used the rapid drop off area, £2.00 for 5 minutes ... okay that’s cheaper than Manchester and others. My partner took less than 30 seconds to grab her case and go to departure, I was left in a queue the length of the drop off area, by the time I queued to the barrier it was 11 minutes later, so for the privilege of queuing up to exit the rapid drop off it cost me £8.00, fortunately I had some change and my wallet with me, personally East Midlands Airport should give me back the £6.00 over payment for there inept management system. Pretty much think this airport is a disgrace to its customers.

"a disgraceful way to treat people"

Not Verified | Firstly the drop-off charges for cars are ridiculous. £5 for 5 minutes then £1 per minute. Absolutely scandalous, especially when there's a queue to get out of the site and the minutes are ticking by. How they get away with it is a mystery. Then the bus they use to transport passengers to their plane. They are far too small for the numbers involved and when I was there one woman was reduced to tears when an airport worker pushed her onto the already full bus before closing the doors. It was humiliating and a disgraceful way to treat people. Then the horrors of passport control, you are forced to join a chaotic queue for 4 recognition machines whilst two manually operated desks are empty. It's a crazy situation that can be rectified by either installing more machines or letting people through the manually operated section. It makes no sense at all and when I pointed out the madness of it all I was told the staff were obeying orders. East Midlands is undoubtedly one of the worst airports I've ever used and hopefully will never use the place ever again. It's a shambles and a disgrace.
