"Otopeni requires much improvement yet"

Trip Verified | Immigration and customs processes are downright third-world, not any other way to put it. Very poor signage and crowd control. Finding the Uber lot can be a real pain in the rear, and crossing the road in front of the terminal to get to said lot isn't the safest. There is a train terminal with express trains to the city, with trains leaving every 40 minutes or so. If you want to take a taxi, you can buy a ticket inside the terminal so that you pay a flat/reasonable rate, rather than the rate determined by a driver's whim. As for departures, check-in with TAROM was fine, but I also checked my bag in and went through passport control and security when the airport wasn't obscenely crowded. If you arrive less than 3 hours before your flight and/or there are a lot of departures at around the same time, woe be unto you in those lines. Airside, at least in the international terminal, there is a reasonably good array of duty-free shopping, coffee shops, and restaurants, although the floors and restrooms can be rather dirty. Wi-Fi is hit and miss throughout the entire airport. All in all, there's no doubt that this airport has improved from the communist era, but, even as an American used to subpar airports, I have to say that Otopeni requires much improvement yet.

"Transit was pure chaos"

Not Verified | Transit was pure chaos. The Security staff treated the passengers like animals. It is not normal to have a security check in the transit zone and it took forever because one person wanted to control every step of the procedure. Everybody ran to the gate sweating and I saw people crying. In addition, the flight had a delay and they didn’t inform us. All the stress was so unnecessary and gave our whole trip a bad taste. Never again.

"1 hour to pass the security for transit"

Not Verified | I came with Tarom from Amman and had Transit to Munich. After embarking the Plane all Tranfer passengers had to walk first one floor down. No escalators provided. Than we had to go up again one Floor again via stairs. On this level in between is the security check for transit. One security check only. But we could not go directly there. We had to go an additional floor up and there was a Desk with someone checking passports and boarding pass. Than we went the same stairs down again to the security check. As this is not already weird enough, this system can't handle the amount of transfer passengers. The queue was long and it took us 1 hour to pass the security for transit. The personnel working there was very rude, slowly and totally uninterested in us managing our connection. Too many people complained but no one cared. Managed to be at my boarding gate exactly at boarding. Unbelievable how such a small airport can make transit so difficult.

"Terrible management, I am not impressed"

Not Verified | I had a flight at 7.25am and when I arrived at my gate an hour and a half before my flight was to leave, I found another destination on the board and no one at the desk to explain. Then, the destination changed to the correct one, but I only found out online that my flight is 4.5 hours delayed. I waited and waited and 4 hours into my waiting, suddenly there's another destination on the board (again!) and still no explanation! Was the flight moved to another gate? If so, why wasn't there an announcement or information on the check-in board at the old gate? It's terrible management, I am not impressed. And the [unnamed] airline is not impressing me either.

"You are an international airport, but you are not equipped as one"

Trip Verified | Buna ziua, Prin prisma serviciului folosesc transportul aerian intern destul de des. La ultimele 2 vizite a trebuit sa ma descalt, in conditiile in care nu puneti la dispozitie botosei de ultima folosinta. Nu mi se pare normal si nici igienic sa ne plimbam desculti pe unde pasagerii calca incaltati. Sunteti un aeroport international, dar nu sunteti dotati ca unul. - Hello, In terms of service, I use domestic air transport quite often. At the last 2 visits I had to take off my shoes, in the conditions in which you do not make the last-use boot available. It does not seem normal or hygienic for us to walk barefoot where the passengers step on their shoes. You are an international airport, but you are not equipped as one.

"Airport is very low quality in many aspects"

Not Verified | Airport is very low quality in many aspects, cleanliness, design, furniture. The staff, some of them are nice and friendly but most are not like that, they are a bit aggressive, they don't seem welcoming at all, their English language is not the best and if you are working in an international airport that is the biggest in Romania, then I would usually expect the staff to speak better English. Overall don't recommend, but if you don't have another option it will do the job, it just won't be a very nice experience.

"the whole experience is cumbersome"

Trip Verified | A surprisingly small airport for a capital city. The whole appearance is dated with dirty floors, limited food court and cramped lay out. Staff were ok, not the friendliest. Duty-free shops are in abundance. The best part is the border control as they've many booths to choose from in a smart cubicle setting. Other than that the whole experience is cumbersome.

"staff handling the situation were arrogant"

Trip Verified | I wish to make a formal complaint with regards to the handling of passengers. Me and my partner were due to fly, and were denied due to my name being written in Bulgarian. Nowhere does it specify a language for this to be written in. My name also matches the ID required for travel. Upon asking for a manager to speak to to get this resolved, we received a "NO" answer and tried to find a competent employee on the issue ourselves, we were thrown between people which appeared to be time wasting until our flight had departed. Only then did the man assisting us, walk us near the entrance and said "exit" and then walked off. The staff handling the situation were arrogant, rude and made a joke of the issue. I will be raising the local authorities as this has caused a complete domino effect, not to mention it appeared as though the matter was made worse by the fact I am Bulgarian, not Romanian/English. It was not just departing from this Airport either, upon arrival from England we were met with the same hostility.

"rude staff at Wizz Air check in desk"

Trip Verified | Extremely rude staff at the Wizz Air check in desk. I've never had such a degrading experience with an airport as the one I had yesterday at the Bucharest Otopeni. Wizz Air staff was yelling and humiliating the passengers with her attitude. They need a huge improvement of their customer service. It's a shame and really sad.

"the most mortifying experience in an international Airport"

Trip Verified | I arrived at the airport at 6am, had everything ready including printed negative results. I took a second rapid test in the bathroom and took photos. I went to board my flight and they proceed to tell me I need a certified certificate within four hours to prove my rapid test is negative, this was not information provided to me even when I called the call center (which by the way took an hour to get through for Blue Air). I now need to miss my flight and buy a new one for 250 euros. I asked the lady at the check in who do I talk to because I had no idea and it never specified how I get this test with a certificate within 4 hours of my flight, she tells me, there is no one to talk to. I walk back through customs with security, crying and confused. I ask the information desk guy who tells me he doesn't know what I'm talking about, So I ask a security lady, she says ask the info guy, I say I did so she asks him. He looks at his computer, I think he's looking something up, after 5 minutes I realize he's just on his computer doing whatever he wants. So I yell pharmacy at him, he grunts, and says go up the stairs to the right. The pharmacy assistant speaks no English but sells me a rapid test. I call my Romanian friend for assistance as I still need to prove with a certificate that my results are negative, they talk on loud speaker. The lady yells at my friend and tells her to tell me to leave. My friend then calls the airport and finds out I have to walk 12 minutes along the highway to go to a drive through test to get the results, with all my luggage. I finally do this and arrive back exhausted and furious. This was the most mortifying experience in an international Airport and Bucharest should be ashamed. In an international Airport people need at a minimum to be able to have compassion and probably be able to speak English? I mean come on, if I can go to Japan and have no problems I should also be able to come here and have the same experience. Get out of the stone age and get some friendly staff who know what a pharmacy is.
