"security check is an absolute nightmare"

(Germany)

Not Verified | Besides an airport that is not user-friendly designed (too many stairs, unfriendly environment), the security check is an absolute nightmare. And it is getting worse day by day. Yesterday it took me 45 minutes to go through check-in because on Sunday evening they had only three check-in counters open. I went to T2 and cut various corners, otherwise it would not have been possible to reach my flight in time. The only good thing about T2 is that you do not have to take everything out because at T1, I have experienced several times over the last weeks that they check everything in your carry-on luggage. They take Christmas cookies away, they take presents away, they are slow, unfriendly, and it makes me feel so ashamed to be a German because of this. It's a disgrace for the German capitol. All international travellers (and Germans as well) are embarrassed of the way they are working there. If you can, try not to use this airport.

"passport control took another hour"

(New Zealand)

Trip Verified | Absolutely one of the worst international airport I have experienced and I have been to many airports all over the world. On arrival passport control took another hour with just 3 then 4 out of 7 counters occupied and only EU citizens allowed to use the very poorly marked eGates (yet we allow Germans to use the eGates in New Zealand and Australia). Our luggage took two hours to appear with no reasons given for the delay other than a repeating message that due to operational issues it was delayed (no sh*t sherlock). Departing from that airport was even worse. After fighting Berlin traffic to get out of the city check in, passport and X-Ray officials were particularly unhelpful. Access to the gates was super confusing with one area closed off with no clear signage where to go. The layout on airside is a debacle. Restaurants and shops are miles to walk to with no conveyor belts. The ceiling is so low and dark it feels really oppressive. Terrible airport. If they had kept Berlin Tegel open as a city airport they would have seen that people and airlines would have refused to use the new one, but as it is Berlin travellers are stuck with that Albert Speeresque monstrosity miles outside the city.

“the worst check in and airport experience”

(Canada)

Not Verified | After over 50 years of air travel, and twenty transatlantic return flights, I experienced the worst check in and airport experience at Berlin Brandenburg in September 2024. My wife and I completed the online check in but that proved to be of little help as it provided us with no means of obtaining the necessary Baggage tags for us to use the bag drop procedure. With minimal staff available, and a long line of people requiring help in fully checking in, we lined up for over an hour before we were able to check our bags. We then lined up for 45 minutes I'm order to go through security. The treatment we received going through security was appalling. My wife and I are not fluent German speakers and when we did not immediately fully understand the instructions, they were simply repeated louder and in a very exasperated tone. We were then thoroughly frisked iand required to take up pistures difficult for those in their seventies. It felt as though we were being punished and the hostility was palpable. Throughout Berlin Brandenburg the lack of Lufthansa staff to respond to inquiries was a problem and we were unable to get necessary information about our connecting Lufthansa flight. The signage in the airport is very poor especially for those arriving at the Flughafen Berlin railway station and there were no staff around to help people. I'm future we will avoid Berlin Brandenburg and use a different airline than Lufthansa.

"worst airport we have ever experienced"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | It's been the third time that we had to depart from this airport and it's not getting any better. The way this airport was designed is inefficient causing long lines at security. It's a nightmare to watch how slow the entire process works. Security staff on all three occasions have been rude despite us speaking German, making sure to lecture us in one way or another. It took an hour and a half to go through it and if our flight hadn't been delayed, we would certainly have missed it. We travel a lot on business and Berlin must be the worst airport we have ever experienced. As we have to return to Berlin at some time, we are flying into Hamburg in the future to avoid Berlin Brandenburg. It was a disaster even before the delayed opening and if they don't change the staff's attitude nor security layout and operation, it should be shut down again.

"sub-par for a new airport"

(Australia)

Not Verified | We have used the new BER airport a couple of times and overall experience is sub-par for a new airport. The airport feels cramped with limited processing facilities that are not fully functional (manned) that results in some minor congestion and unnecessary delays. Whilst being new the airport is not particularly pleasing aesthetically compared to other major airports. As a capital airport it lags behind many other airports, Changi, Munich, Hamad etc. Should be much better. The airport is quite well serviced by coach, taxi and rail transport to the city and access for vehicle traffic into and out of the airport is quite well designed and functional.

“Disorganised airport”

(Switzerland)

Not Verified | Disorganised airport. Security controls too long. Food Hall small and with few offer. Burger King closes at 6 pm. Cannot understand why they close so early. Mountains of garbage at their restaurant, tables very dirty. At the Tegel Lounge the receptionist does not speak english. Really poor airport. If you fly from T2 the taxy driver needs to drop you off at T1 and then you have to walk around 400m (not covered). Is the famous German organisation and precision??

"security refused to speak anything but German"

(Lithuania)

Trip Verified | Terminal 2: security woman was screaming and cursing at me when I did not understand what she was saying in German. Most people at the airport security refused to speak anything but German and were rude.

“an embarrassment to Germany”

(Romania)

Trip Verified | Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is not probably, is definitely the worst airport I have ever been in more than 20 years of flying all over the world. It is an embarrassment to Germany with its stereotypical image of order, organization and respect. As many times the case, things are not always as they are marketed/sold, but here the gap is truly wide. In my ranking of over 200 airports I’ve been at, BER “excels” as the international airport with the most miserable/rude staff I have ever had to deal with, a definite 0/10. Probably never flying from here again.

“an utter and total embarrassment”

(Germany)

Trip Verified | Insane long check in times and staff working slowly like they don't give a damn. I have now for the 3rd time experienced the longest check in times in Europe. Up to 1 hour. The staff works sadistically slowly and is being overly pedantic over just about everything. Also, way too little toilets and some gates don't even have dedicated sitting spaces. Considering that BBA is Germanys capital airport and the time and cost to build it over the past years, it's just an utter and total embarrassment for entire Germany.
