"I would suggest leaving early to get to the airport"

(United Kingdom)

Not Verified | Getting through the departure area at Banjul airport The Gambia to get to the UK is beyond ridiculous. 1) Firstly when you arrive to the airport you have to queue and weigh your luggage outside of the airport on scales. 2) You then proceed to pay 1000GMD PP departure tax about £16 at another area 3) You are then shown to the first check in point where you need to show the following, Covid test vaccination proof for the UK. Evidence that a day 2 test has been booked in the UK. We had to challenge the staff here as they were stating that a day 8 was needed as well. Not if you are doubled jabbed. Covid test result in The Gambia Passenger locator form for the UK. PP 4) Luggage drop - the conveyor belt does not work. So you weigh your luggage and take them off to place them back onto the luggage trolley. Air Brussels are strict with weight and do not give you an inch. Your hand luggage is also weighed at this point. 5) Passengers proceed to bag security where the luggage is scanned, checked and can be opened (so have your keys ready) The bags are then weighed again. Once this is done the bags are taken by a man to be placed in holding. 6) Next stop - The passenger locator form for Brussels then needs to be shown at another desk. 7) Travellers then need to proceed to immigration, where eye scans, a further PP check is done and finger prints are taken 8) Another security check again for hand luggage which is scanned and your PP is checked again. 9) The final check is done before you board the plane and access the bus. Covid test result - despite being shown already Standard PP check boarding pass Hand luggage is weighed again Boarding pass for connecting flights need to be shown as well. I would suggest leaving early to get to the airport. I would also suggest that you eat inside the airport at the restaurant to the top right. The restaurant past the final check point is limited and more expensive too. You are also attacked by flies whilst eating. There is no duty free shopping either.

"airport is a mess"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Terrible, the airport is being redeveloped and is a mess. Arrivals and departures are handled via a roughly constructed shed like entrance and exit which is hopelessly overcrowded. Security on arrival is slow and visa is obtained at the entrance - staff reasonably efficient. Baggage check on exit is slapdash and chaotic. No airbridges - you are bussed to and from your flights.

"old but works very fast"

(Bulgaria)

Verified Review | Banjul airport is old but works very fast. So long as there aren't multiple flights arriving or departing at the same time you can make it from the entrance to the lounge in 5 minutes. There is limited seating and the departure hall lacks air conditioning. The upstairs lounge is air conditioned. Passport control is fast and hassle free - no fingerprinting or cameras.

"very efficient and friendly"

(United Kingdom)

Verified Review | We found Banjul airport very efficient and friendly. As we were on foot from the main road we were expecting a long walk to the terminal, but we shouldn't have worried as within 10m of the airport entrance we were asked if we would like a lift in a chauffeur driven car taking the security supervisor to work. We gratefully accepted and on reaching the terminal he insisted on helping us check in quickly as we had no hold baggage. Boarding cards in hand we rapidly went through security and 2 mins later were sitting in the pleasant open air departure area and ordering a couple of beers and a sandwich. Service indeed and for the most part delivered with a smile.

Banjul Airport customer review

(United Kingdom)

I have been travelling to the Gambia for a number of years now and the airport has declined in over the years. The airport used to be a very friendly place to travel through but now major problems with long queues at check in especially. What makes matters worse is they now charge you £18 for the privilege of it all when you leave the country and there were a lot of unhappy passengers on my last visit. It can take between 1-2 hours just to pay the money check in and go through security in utter chaos. The trouble is some of the flights are now to close together and this is a contributing factor.

I have been travelling to the Gambia for six years now and have seen alot of changes at the airport over the years. Security are very friendly people. You can even sit out in the open and have a drink and a bite to eat and watch your plane land.

Just back from the Gambia again most things at the airport have not changed. However new check in procedure for your homeward flight now includes a thorough search of hand luggage and once you enter the check in area you are not allowed out again so you cannot use any airport facilities other than the departure lounge. This does of course mean you can spend longer at Luigi's !

A very basic airport. Arrival reasonably speedy - agree with previous reviewer that porters can be a little overzealous with "offering" to help. Departures poor. Fairly quick processing of passengers through queues - but horrified that security consisted of a metal detector arch and a very cursory hand inspection of carry-on bag. Totally inadequate amount and quality of seating and dreadful toilet facilities with charter flights [predictably] departing around the same time.

Banjul Airport customer review

For a west african country it is quite good with reasonable if basic facilities. The biggest problem here is the baggage reclaim for inbound passengers and the porters who do not seem to understand that some people can carry their own bags and do not require their services. The runway is one of the longest in Africa but sections of it are fairly bumpy I have landed several times here with more than a few bounces !

Banjul Airport customer review

By African standards this is a very good airport. The building appears to be about 20 years old. Because of the tourists it caters for a lot of people. Arriving on a large aircraft will mean long queues for immigration but they do move quite quickly. Baggage claim is also a bit chaotic because the luggage carousels are not big enough. Bags are xrayed on the way out but they will give up when the queue gets too long. Most people will then be taken to a couch by their tour company. Departure procedures are OK. There might be queues at check in but no worse than any other airport. The departure lounge is OK with a few shops/bar and there is a basic business lounge on the top floor. None of the staff asked for money and were quite helpful. Overall a good experience.
