Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

Big airport with good [but as usual expensive] rail connection to Amsterdam proper and relatively cheap premium local beer airside departures. The annoying thing is the security-at-the-gate which always annoys me but otherwise I think this airport is reasonable for it's size and location. As others have noted there is some walking required - but I don't understand people's insistence that when travelling 10000km they should not have to walk a single pace without some kind of mechanical assistance. I don't mind walking it's usually faster than the moving walkways with groups and couples standing willy-nilly in the middle on the left and on the right all at the same time while enjoying the skin-crawlingly-slow pace of crawling forwards towards their destination.

A thoroughly shoddy experience. Very long walk to connecting flight with travelators not working. Then officious staff trying without success to place cabin baggage in the hold. But the biggest disappointment of all was the fact that there was nowhere to site in the departure gate because the airport is so far behind the development of larger long-haul aircraft. So more people than seats - and no opportunity to sit and relax before the flight.

It is surprising how an airport can change during renovations. It is one large building site at the moment between terminal E and F. Therefore it means that passengers have to walk long ways where in the past they had conveyor belts. But I am sure that it will change again after they have finished. For the time of renovations we have to live with these problems. On the Schengen site I loved the roof garden. It is a perfect place to enjoy.

Definitely going downhill as an airport. A long walk with no assistance from the railway station to the passport control followed by another very long walk - about 15 minutes - to the airport lounge which included climbing a flight of stairs and a 5 minute walk along a rough shelter on the rooftop. Then the same in reverse as part of another 15 minute walk (with one travelator for a short section) to get to the gate. This was not helped by the airport deciding to test the fire shutters in the middle of the afternoon which made everyone wait for 15 minutes while they came down were tested and then went up again. This airport is now just too big.

This used to be my favourite airport but the security arrangements for non Schengen departures (security at the gate) have actually made Heathrow look a more attractive option - and that's something I never thought I'd write. Complete chaos from beginning to end. Locked gate nowhere it sit massive queue no room to prepare for check no room to reassemble myself after check then called for boarding to be shuffled through to a smaller area where everyone stands (because there are only 8 seats) for 20 minutes awaiting permission to board. Appreciate the terminal is undergoing renovations but I don't think those have anything to do with the dog's breakfast of security that those traveling to non schengen destinations have to endure. And to make it worse I was transiting having already undergone security at my initial point of departure.

First time transiting in Amsterdam after many years the Airport is undergoing massive renovation and it really is inconvenient. Have 4 hours to kill but not too many food options available and we ended up in McDonald's as this seems the most familiar choice. As an Asian would prefer to have Asian food available at the Airport but there seems no choice for this except for a sushi place which is very crowded at that time. The place looks like a mess due to the renovation and we have to walk quite far via a narrow and dark corridor to a more decent area for transit (the Holland Boulevard) to do some last minute duty free shopping. Hopefully the renovation will make Schiphol one of the world's best again. One of the good thing about the Airport is the availability on toilet inside the gate holding room which is very convenient before you board the plane.

I have traveled all over the world and this was by far the most tiring experience. This was my first experience at Schiphol and I do not recommend it I will be utilizing other international hubs in Europe even if it costs me more money to do so. I was transferring to another plane in Schiphol and while a 2 hour transfer window at any other airport would have warranted time to eat and have a drink it was barely enough time to get on the plane. As such while the facilities looked decent I cannot comment on the food and drinks. I am not sure how this airport is rated so highly but as many others have stated Schiphol is horrible because of the following: Passport Check lines chaotic and slow for non-EU passports (40 minutes). Security personnel are rude (would not be as big of a deal if you didn't have to deal with them so often). Check-in at the gate is 1.5 hours before flight because of the ridiculous decentralized security process. Once again this is a transfer not the initial security check at your first airport. Security interview at gate - seriously this is a first for me and everyone must go through it and is absolutely a waste of time (1 hour with a short line in front of me). Removal of everything in my carry-on - as a traveling consultant I have 2 laptops a tablet a phone and all the necessary chargers headphones and adapters which means everything comes out into clear plastic bags. Yep I needed 3 of them. Luckily I avoided having to wait in the purgatory room after security and prior to boarding as I was one of the last people on the plane. My hard shell checked luggage was cracked open the entire length of the bag. This may have not been the airport's fault but I'll chalk that up to KLM. Schiphol is now my number one airport that I avoid.

Traveled from Schiphol airport on 16 Feb despite its great PR machine working overtime to convince us that it is a flagship operation this week it resembled a rather shambolic building site. The renovations are of a significant size causing passengers to walk extremely long distances to reach airline lounges. Why couldn't KLM position a lounge closer to the D/E gates? (Or is this yet another way of saving money by assuming that a significant number of passengers will not bother or have the time to hike halfway across the airport to find the downsized facilities?). I am planning to avoid Schiphol until this project is completed it really is a miserable experience.

Really great Airport to transit Some long walks from different piers but nothing any problem. Loads of places to eat and fabulous choices of food. Amazing shops with everything you could want great for Diamonds and high end watches. Really would recommend anyone thinking about a European airport transit point. Some staff at gate areas rude but that's just human nature.

It been years since I last used Schiphol. It runs quite smoothly and waiting times are minimal. However the lack of clear signage - even for a seasoned traveller is a concern. I had no idea which way to go for the exit but followed the general masses of people heading that way. Departure area D has two signs pointing in opposite directions. Signage in the rail station is even worse so again follow the general crowd arriving.
