"was no communication"

I have travelled through AMS in the past, last time in October 2015, and I have never experienced anything like I did today. My itinerary was changed by the airline in the middle of the night due to a delay in my scheduled flights for the next day. My new routing brought me through AMS with 1 hour between flights. I knew going through the passport control for transfers would require some waiting, but what I experienced was pandemonium. Hundreds and hundreds of people were waiting to get through passport control with no clear lines. It seemed the only people actually getting through were people whose flight was called - meant they were boarding the plane. The passport control people were screaming at people who tried to come up when their flight was not called. There was no communication as to what was causing the delay other than to tell people to get into lines that did not exist and never moved - I spent a bit of time wading through the masses to find one of these lines only to have my flight called and had to wade to another area. Once allowed through it was the normal passport check. The other people waiting provided the most helpful information - seems it didn't really matter how much time you had between flights as you were only getting through at the 11th hour.

"airport is chaotic"

This airport is chaotic. Nothing like I was expecting. It has so many things that you don't know where to go or what to do. Once you get to the train station and try to get back to the departures/arrivals halls everything can be really confusing. The worst thing of all there are some really rude staff. After entering security and leaving my belongings on the trays the staff member inspecting my things was simply throwing them back at me - never seen anything like it.

"efficient and friendly"

To be honest, I'm quite shocked at the reviews that I am reading on here. I transited through Schiphol Airport at 5.30am this morning and I couldn't have been more satisfied. Despite the time, and the amount of people going through security, it was probably the most pleasant airport experience I have ever had. From security and ground crew, through to the catering staff, they could not have been more efficient and friendly. The queue when I arrived looked like it was going to take forever but, despite all the correct security procedures being followed, I was through in 10mins max. The queue was constantly moving, the staff were very calm and helpful with passengers and the signage was excellent. Despite the time of the morning, the staff were actually very cheery (whilst being very professional) and I have no reason whatsoever to complain. The airport itself is comfortable and logical. For me it top marks.

"has a lot to offer"

Amsterdam Schipol has a lot to offer - from good facilities, good connections, and last but not the least, rude staff. I was shocked to find out that the airport management are letting their airport staff tarnish the good name of Schipol. The staff at security are probably the most advanced among them! They must have gone to university to perfect the art of sarcasm and being condescending. The queue can get really long and you can be waiting for up to 90 minutes. Horrible.

"queues of passengers"

What have they done to this previous excellent airport? Queue for the new security, well they have got this very wrong. The new central security pod is not capable of processing passengers that are wanting to fly, result queues of hundreds of passengers, queue on the stairs, this is not safe. No dedicated business fast track security area, I pay a lot extra for the fast track business. Queue for passport inspection, again hundreds of passengers in the queue, some now pretty desperate not to miss their flights. From entering security area to exit passport control, time 70 minutes. At least the airport wifi was working so I could change my flight to a later one. Going again in 3 weeks, hope its better.

"indifference and outright rudeness"

I hadn't flown in or out of Schiphol since 2005 and the experience left me with the impression that Dutch hospitality has been diluted to the point of indifference and outright rudeness. The staff at immigration were unsmiling, unfriendly and performed like mindless automatons. There were 3 passport control queues, serving D,E,F and G lines and there must have been hundreds of people backed up. The queue staff did their best, but without additional immigration officers, their efforts were futile. Employees at the various vendors must have taken the same courses in unfriendliness as the immigration staff. The lady cleaning one of the toilets backed at customers, "Closed, cleaning" and waived an imperial hand to shush us away. The food outlet "Bread" was another example of rudeness and apathy on the part of an employee who acted as if I was invisible. All in all - I will avoid Schiphol, and for that fact, Amsterdam. I think it's a matter of too many tourists and too many people in the service industry that have flocked to the trough of indifference and apathy.

"no time to do anything"

I was transitting this airport with my husband and young child. I was mentally preparing for a 2 hour coffee etc when I spotted the queue at passport control to get to our departure gate. We stood in that queue for 90 mins and had no time to do anything but run the 6 mins to the next gate. The only explanation we were given is they were short staffed. They must know in advance how many flights and passengers are coming in so why have only 4 manned controls who seemed in no great rush and were laughing and joking with each other despite people being really stressed. I thought Schipol was supposed to be a hub. I will avoid it like the plague.

"staff impersonal and rude"

Late evening arrival from Heathrow into Amsterdam, coming in around 2230 via a Busgate, dropped off next to Gate D06. Normally it is a short walk from there to the immigration and onwards to luggage collection in arrival. Due to the construction works and budget cuts, they now close the immigration checkpoint at the D-Pier after 2130 and you're forced to walk almost the entire length of the terminal building airside to reach the next immigration checkpoint in F-Pier. This is a fierce 10 minutes walk from the bus drop-off point at D06. To add insult to the injury, when arriving on KLM, you have to walk the entire length of the terminal once more to get back to arrivals 2 to pickup your luggage and get landside. Staff are impersonal and rude these days, but with all the thngs going wrong at Schiphol at this time, I somehow can generate an understanding for this. Luggage delivery is embarassingly slow, when arriving from a 45 minutes flight from London and you need to wait another 30-45 minutes for your luggage to be on the belt. Toilets always smell - with Schiphol being my homebase, I dare say that this is not a single occasion but a on-going problem with the cleaning services. For smokers there are plenty of small, glassed off zones all over the airside, usually at the root of the piers or adjacent to the cafes.

"staff are really unhelpful"

This airport has really gone down in my estimation. Rather than improve the airport, recent renovations now mean less places to eat and shop. If you do go into a shop the staff are really unhelpful. Queues seem as long as ever and the layout is still ridiculous and sprawling. Also the types of currency you can get at any of the exchanges are really limited

"chaotic security"

Chaotic security and passport control. Massive delays, rude staff and less than half the electronic passport control machines working. An impressive failure for an airport that's only 20 mins from a wonderful, welcoming city. Made me consider ever flying there again despite an otherwise perfect visit.
