"treating passengers in a rude manner"

(Netherlands)

Not Verified | Schiphol is a spacious airport, clean and with a great navigation system. But can anyone do something about the politeness of the staff at the bodyscan point, please! They are treating the passengers in a rude manner. It hasn't changed over the years. There's not one airport in the world where I had such unpleasant experiences. You can be strict and polite you know.

"short transit times can be stressful"

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | Obviously, Schiphol is a big airport, and like all large airports walking distance between gates, terminals, and so forth are long. Travellators help but short transit times can be stressful. Terminal and gate signposting are good. All terminals are walkable. Signposting for other areas like washrooms and lounges are very poor. Passenger management at embarkation was very good indeed, once the staff finished the inevitable shepherding into the right line. None of the gates had very good seating and consequently, passengers tended to mill around waiting for announcements. As we found last time we were here, police officers stationed around the terminals make random stops and quiz passengers quite hard about the whys and wherefores of their travel. Very polite but searching. Interrogation with charm.

“terrible luggage delivery”

(Latvia)

Trip Verified | Tens of times flew via Amsterdam to / from my work and every time afraid of my luggage delivery. Previously luggage did not arrive 3 times in a row! Last time during transit luggage has not arrived at the final destination despite there was one and a half hour between the flights! Now I have to live in another country without a luggage for a few days. Absolutely terrible luggage delivery! Avoid this airport for transit.

“again an absolute disaster”

(Netherlands)

Trip Verified | Every time I have to be here you hope the experience will be better. Not! After a trip with great experiences in terms of airports (Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Jakarta terminal 3, Surabaya Juanda), Schiphol was again an absolute disaster. Apparently the management is still incompetent. De-boarding takes forever, the routing from the gate to the exit is messy, unclear and via strangely low and tight corridors and stairs. Passport control is also in a cramped warm room, where the check also took another 35 minutes - with two counters open, baggage handling is the slowest I have ever experienced. Finally, it is NOT possible for a pre-ordered taxi to pick up the traveler due to strange security rules. Chaos everywhere! As a Dutch person, I am ashamed of the way in which the traveler is disrespected. Why is this possible elsewhere in a professional and friendly manner?

“we can't smoke anywhere”

(United Kingdom)

Trip Verified | This is a huge airport, that's for sure. Huge enough to include a smoking area, which they haven't. I only came here because France aren't taking direct flights, and now here I am, not smoking, even though my plane has landed. There are facilities, but all I want to do is smoke a cigarette and I can't. I'm marking them low for everything now. You should have thought about it before you decided to make it so we can't smoke anywhere.

"What type of service is this!"

(Norway)

Trip Verified | The worst experience ever! The staff giving miss directions first sending me to the other point of the airport, then telling me wrong information to get to the business lounge, they sent me all the way to the other side of the airport and it was not there either! My back starting hurting going all around this airport and when I asked for assistance they told me to either go walking for 20 mins to their desk or you will have to wait a very long time for someone to come! What type of service is this! When I asked where is the business Lounge they said oh about a 10 min walk the way I went so I know for a fact it is not there! They were lying straight to my face! I have been traveling for over 45 years and I must say this is the worst airport ever!

"Chaos and incompetence"

(United States)

Trip Verified | Chaos and incompetence. Security stops processing because passport control is blocked by endless crowds, people's gates being closed but nobody can do anything for them? Automatic passport gates take endlessly to process a single passport, so even there people are blocked and crowded. Incredible incompetence and poor organization.

"Airport was dirty"

(United States)

Trip Verified |   Airport was dirty with limited seating. Even the airport lounge was dirty—tables not cleaned, seats stained, food on floors. The passport check process was a chaotic nightmare with staff pulling people out of line at weird times. (For example, pulling folks ahead with departure times at 9:45am but then pulling people after that with departure times of 9:20am. It didn’t make sense to not go in chronological order…) And then boarding the flight itself was also a chaotic mess with people crowding the entire boarding area and no staff organizing folks or clearing space.

"not a great introduction to the city or the country"

(United States)

Trip Verified | A reasonably nice, but huge, airport with poorly thought out protocols for helping people get around. After a week of travel I found that a knee problem that had been improving through physical therapy was just not up to the distance between our arrival and departure gates. There are lovely little shuttles that run all over the airport, so my husband and I flagged one down to see if we could catch a ride. No dice, the drivers evidently may not assist anyone along the way at risk of their jobs. Apparently, travelers must realize prior to departure that there might be an issue with the distance at the connecting airport and declare themselves ‘disabled’ at check-in in order to utilize a service the passenger doesn’t realize they need—until they need it, rather desperately. We were advised to go to a first aid station to get a wheelchair, and followed ‘red cross’ signs along a lengthy slog in the opposite direction of our gate, up an escalator and down a series of long halls, to a heavy glass door with a bell and a view into a mysterious airlock with a pay station, where people entered now and them from a waiting area on one side to talk to the cashier. A harried woman waved at us and disappeared into a back room. After 20 minutes outside the locked door reading signs about Covid testing, we decided it was more likely we’d get Covid than service. After going all the way back, we hailed another shuttle, whose driver was kind enough to point us in yet another direction to walk toward a different station, which did offer wheelchairs. While there was a sign on the wall above the station, there was no signage along the way to guide you there, but the nice shuttle driver did check back to make sure we found it (though they were concerned their boss might see them helping us). The station did, happily, provide a wheelchair, which my 79-year-old husband had the enjoyment of pushing while it was loaded down with me and our carry-ons, back to the main hallway and to the far distant end of the hall containing our gate. The gate for our fight was located in a glass cube chaotically packed with people and their belongings occupying every chair and window ledge, which seemed inadequate to hold a large plane load of people. At least I had the wheelchair to sit in. No longer willing to take a chance on my knee, I walked over and asked the airline staff to order me a wheelchair for the other end of the flight, which they put in the system but could not confirm. Along with everyone else, the end of Covid is also bringing back the leading edge of the boomer population to airports, which means many perfectly healthy and otherwise fit older travelers who are not ‘disabled’ but for whom the now-vast distances of airports may be problematic. Other airports offer shuttles which will pick up travelers who find they can’t make the walk, or whose connections are tight, and Amsterdam evidently sees no problem with transporting their own airport staff in these trolleys. I’m not sure what problem the draconian policy in Amsterdam is designed to address, but it’s certainly not a great introduction to the city or the country.
